Professional athletes aren't the only ones who feel miserable on crutches or in plaster. But because they can't return to work if they don't fully recover, they do face self-doubt and questions that perhaps the rest of us don't: Will I be the same player I used to be? Will I recover in time for next season? Will the team give my spot to someone else? Must I find a new team? Will I have to uproot my family?

"All of a sudden, all these questions will hit home to every single guy," says Paul Lake, the former Manchester City captain whose harrowing biography, "I'm Not Really Here," recounts how his promising career was cut short by injury.

Like actors who come alive for the camera, players need sizable egos to want to perform for the crowds. Falling out of the limelight because of injury and discovering that they are not invincible or irreplaceable can be a big shock, sports psychologists say. I was asked, 'How is that knee of yours? When are you going to be back?' To which I'd lie and say, 'I'm back in six weeks."'

"Some nights I would just pace the room. It was the loneliest place," he said.

"I wouldn't recommend it to anyone," Hargreaves says in a video interview on Manchester City's Web site. The midfielder who shone for England at the 2006 World Cup hasn't completed a match for three years. Knees, hamstring, shoulder - they've all let him down. But he did not give up. Released by Manchester United, Hargreaves posted videos of himself training on YouTube to prove he was fit again and he persuaded City to take a gamble and sign him this August. Hargreaves started for City against Birmingham in the Carling Cup on Wednesday night, his first appearance with the club.

"It's difficult for people from the outside looking in. You'd think, 'There's something going wrong there. The guy is made out of glass,"' Hargreaves acknowledges. "I missed Champions League finals. I missed World Cups. I missed so many big games that I would have loved to be a part of, and it's difficult when you're in it and you're trying to find a solution to these things and you seem to not be going any further forward. It was incredibly frustrating."

Holden says he spent "hours upon hours on the couch and the only thing I could do was to crutch down to the local coffee shop just to get out of the house." Watching his Bolton teammates from the stands, he would "put on a brave face."

"It's more tough mentally than anything else because it's what you do for your livelihood. And, you know, (while) you're out there, people are competing for your places, people push themselves ahead of you. You don't wish an injury on anyone but sometimes it opens doors for other players," he said.

But rehabbing with other injured players helped: "You can pick each other up when you're having a down day, you rely on those close to you, you rely on your friends, your family, you rely on anyone, really, to give you a boost and to remind you all that it's going to be worth it once you're back out there playing."

Ben Arfa broke the tibia and fibula of his left leg last October. The France international told Le Parisien daily that he counted down the hours Tuesday before his comeback match for Newcastle that night and afterward felt "filled with happiness. I'm alive again."

Holden echoed those thoughts.

"I've become an expert in rehab at this point, but I hope that this is the last time I have to do that," he said. "Once you get back on the field, you make that first tackle, you make that first pass, and it goes along way to pushing yourself back to 100 percent."

NOTHING has changed, there are still all these little clicks and bff pacts and what not that happen and unfortunately there isn't a whole lot we can do to stop it but I for one have always tried to teach both my girls RESPECT, KINDNESS, and to NEVER pick on or poke fun at others. The 9/11 debate was centered on a single issue: Islam. Osama Bin Laden was taken at his own words by the West: Al-Qaeda, even if its methods were supposedly not approved by most Muslims, was seen as the vanguard or at least a symptom of ?Muslim wrath? against the West, fueled by the fate of the Palestinians and by Western encroachments in the Middle East; and if this wrath, which has pervaded the contemporary history of the Middle East, has been cast in Islamic terms, it is because Islam is allegedly the main, if not the only, reference that has shaped Muslim minds and societies since the Prophet. This vertical genealogy obscured all the transversal connections (the fact, for instance, that Al-Qaeda systematized a concept of terrorism that was first developed by the Western European ultra-left of the seventies or the fact that most Al-Qaeda terrorists do not come from traditional Muslim societies but are recruited from among global, uprooted youth, with a huge proportion of converts).

The consequence was that the struggle against terrorism was systematically associated with a religious perspective based on the theory of a clash of civilizations: Islam was at the core of Middle East politics, culture, and identity. This led to two possibilities: either acknowledge the ?clash of civilizations? and head toward a global confrontation between the West and Islam or try to mend fences through a ?dialogue of civilizations,? enhancing multiculturalism and religious pluralism. Both attitudes shared the same premises: Islam is both a religion and a culture and is at the core of the Arab identity. They differed on one essential point: for the ?clashists,? there is no ?moderate? Islam; for the ?dialogists,? one should favor and support ?moderate? Islam, with the recurring question, what is a good Muslim?

God changed my life as a sophomore in high school and I never got over it. I suppose my aptitude for writing came from those years of research and writing papers. I never set out to be a writer; but I wrote so much that it became natural to me.? Do you remember Chariots of Fire, where the Olympic runner said that he felt God?s pleasure when he ran? I sense God?s pleasure when I research and write.?

? ? ? ? ? ? ? What inspired you to write your book?

Writing and publishing has been revolutionized through digital technologies such as social networking, the web, and print on demand. Yet, most authors seem confused about how to effectively use those tools to write, publish, and sell their books effectively. I talked to people at the Decatur Book Festival last weekend and was both amazed and heartbroken when authors told me about paying thousands of dollars for services they could have gotten free, or signing bad contracts with the wrong publishers, which made marketing their books very difficult.

There are so many conflicting, confusing voices out there today.? Cherie and I decided to do some serious research into how successful low profile authors are publishing and selling their books, both in traditional and nontraditional publishing. Our discoveries were often counter-intuitive and differed with the majority of advice we were hearing from many of today?s ?experts.? ??

What kinds of reactions has the book generated thus far?

We just published it this summer, but we have yet to hear any negative reaction. You can pretty much judge for yourself from the Amazon reviews. Readers are delighted to get the information and especially express appreciation that we put it in a very readable and even enjoyable style.

I was afraid that we might have packed in so much information that readers would be overwhelmed, but so far, everyone appreciates out putting all the details in there. Some read it straight through, but others read the chapters that apply specifically to their needs.?

?What's the main message that you'd like readers to take away from it?

If you want to write for yourself, keep a diary. But if you want to write for other people, learn the business of writing. Most authors seem to love honing their craft, but are shocked when they get their book out and nobody buys it. As someone said, ?Writing is rewriting; publishing is marketing.? People won?t buy your books unless they first know they exist. I don?t care if your books are on Amazon and in every bookstore in the country. If you fail to get the word out, nobody buys them. So take some time to learn the business of writing, not only from our book, but from meeting with fellow authors, joining writers? groups, etc.

What?s next for you?

I just wrote a brief (50 page) critique of atheist Richard Dawkins? The God Delusion, that?s I put up in beta. I?m offering it as a 99 cent Kindle to help students who read Dawkins and want to get the other side. It?s called Richard Dawkins and His God Delusion: A Preliminary Critique of His Truth Claims. But now I want to stop writing for awhile and concentrate on marketing the books we have. I love speaking to writers? groups and getting the word out through so many effective ways we have available today.

Any final thoughts you'd like to share?

It?s a great time to be a writer! If you?ve got a book inside of you, there are multiple, affordable ways to get it out there. Cherie and I love writing and publishing. And most of the ways we write, publish and market our books are very, very inexpensive, if not free. Never stop learning about writing and publishing. The decline in aged care standards became the focus of attention when it was discovered that many of the elderly were being mistreated, abused or neglected. Lawmakers and citizens alike banded together to create a more caring and concerned environment for the older generations. For a time, healthcare workers were taking advantage of their positions, giving poor quality standard treatment to the elderly.

Medicare has long been the insurance that the elderly have used to take care of medical bills and prescription costs. Social security and retirement funds are often not enough to pay for everything that must be paid for.

We have more concentrated, personalized and caring techniques we use today when dealing with the older generation. Families will become involved, asking questions and getting answers about what they can do to participate in their loved ones care. If they are forced to take their loved one to a nursing home or assisted living facility, they should do as much research as possible before any move is made.

Some families decide to bring a nurse into their home. One of the main reasons for taking this route is that many elderly people require the kind of care that regular family members cannot give.

Assisted living facilities help families take care of loved ones who can no longer do their own daily tasks, such as washing, dressing and feeding. Family members often do not have the skills, time, qualifications or desire to give their elderly relative what they need to be happy and healthy.

After many years of neglect, abuse and maltreatment, lawmakers decided to step in and make a change. As technology advanced, so did our knowledge of how to care for certain old-age ailments. Medicines were discovered and created to help ease the aging process. New rules and regulations were put into place so that new technology is used in a beneficial way for the elderly and abuse or neglect will not be tolerated.

Everyone must stay on top of these issues. The elderly should not ever be put in a place where they are unable to be happy, are treated poorly, or are made to feel uncomfortable or in pain. They are deserving of great respect and dignity and should be cared for with love and kindness.

To avoid any problems at all, families should weigh all the options before deciding what is best for their loved one. If they are personally able to fund the care and expenses of the relative, that is a great way to go. If this is not financially possible, or there is not enough room in the home to comfortably care for the relative, they might consider one of the many types of homes for the elderly that are out there. When abusive behaviors were found in many different nursing homes, the realization of the decline in aged care standards caused citizens and lawmakers alike to stand up for the rights of the older generations.

The Missing Piece in Obama's Job Plan: Demand (Time.com)

At this point, most economists agree that the best way to save the economic recovery is to get moving on jobs. The question is how to do that. After months of dithering, it looks like we may be getting an answer from a down-trodden President Obama. His administration is coming out with a jobs plan next month. And today, the White House announced it's tapping Princeton labor economist Alan Krueger to head the Council of Economic Advisers. So will these moves spur job creation?

The fact is, any jobs plan Obama puts forward isn't likely to have much impact. The White House hasn't sketched out specific plans yet, but the scale of the remedies being bandied about - extending unemployment benefits, renewing a payroll tax expiring end-2011, business tax breaks, workforce training programs, infrastructure spending - wouldn't stab at the heart of the problem: weak demand. Without more consumers clamoring to buy more stuff, there's little incentive for businesses to hire. And without that incentive, any efforts to boost hiring temporarily are bound to be just that: temporary. Economic forecaster Macroeconomic Advisers, for instance, estimates that extending jobless benefits, a payroll tax cut, and business tax breaks would boost the country's 2012 GDP by less than 1 percentage point and employment by 600,000 by the end of next year. As for job training programs, the impact of those is likely to fade unless, in the meantime, demand for companies' products starts to pick up speed. "For temporary training programs and hiring incentives to have much impact now, firms must be confident that when the temporary programs and incentives expire, economic conditions will validate the decision to hire earlier rather than later. In today's economy, there's certainly no guarantee this will occur," the forecaster said in recent comments. "In sum, as disappointing as it may be to unemployed Americans, there simply are limits to what a jobs bill can achieve today."

So what about Alan Krueger, the esteemed student of unemployment marching in to save the day? Could he reverse this gloomy reading with bigger, better initiatives? Matthew Yglesias of the Center for American Progress thinks no. Why? Krueger, he explains, is a specialist in the minute inefficiencies holding back labor markets, not the big picture. His work has focused on whether small-fry snafus like licensing required by certain vendors or regulations like minimum wage gum up hiring and growth. And what's gumming up the market now is much bigger in scale. "My read of his work is that the kind of action he's an aggressive and creative thinker about is relatively small bore, supply side changes rather than big picture efforts to fill the gap," Yglesias says.

In Yglesias's mind, we need more fiscal stimulus, and he's not sure Krueger is going to drive that home. Macroeconomic Advisers echoes that point, not about Krueger specifically, but about the idea that, if fiscal stimulus is going to work, it has to be large-scale. And in this political environment (and with credit-raters breathing down the government's back), large-scale simply won't fly. The bigger the fiscal stimulus proposed, the less politically possible. If public works projects are worthwhile as long-run investments, now is certainly an opportune time to start them. However, infrastructure spending cannot jump-start near-term hiring unless ramped up at a pace and on a scale that, outside of wartime, would be unprecedented. Some economists, like Princeton's Paul Krugman, advocate exactly this policy, but in today's political climate it simply won't happen.

The conclusion? Large-scale action in the short-term coupled with big mid-term cutbacks is the way to go to get the economy moving. But that's not what's in store, since neither Krueger, nor any economist, has the magic equation (no new spending + swift job growth) that would change the foul mood in Washington. It's time to face up to a long, hard recovery regardless of who's in charge.
