Scott Weiland.

Former Stone Temple Pilots frontman Scott Weiland is officially a married man!

The rocker said "I do" to photographer girlfriend Jamie Wachtel Saturday night at their Los Angeles home, according to PEOPLE. "We had the most beautiful, heartfelt ceremony," Wachtel tells the mag.

The bride donned a vintage dress from Paper Bag Princess in Beverly Hills and the groom looked dapper in John Varvatos as they exchanged their Pade Vavra rings.

PHOTOS: Guess the celebrity engagement rings

The Wildabouts rocker first met his now wife back in 2011 while filming music videos for his Christmas album. Scott told Billboard last year he knew when he met Jamie he'd be falling in love with her.

While on the music video shoot, Jamie told him "to tuck in your belly a little bit." He laughs: "It was around the holidays-it was after Thanksgiving, and you know how that tends to be. I was kind of caught off guard, and I started laughing and she started laughing. And I don't know ... something magical happened."

She then gave the rocker a ride home when he "just thought, 'I have a feeling that I am going to fall in love with this woman.'"

Congrats to the happy couple!

(AP) ? Ken Duke needed 187 starts on the PGA Tour to get his first win, securing it at a tournament that is building a reputation for such breakthroughs.

The 44-year-old journeyman made a 2? foot birdie putt on the second playoff hole Sunday to beat Chris Stroud at the Travelers Championship.

Stroud, who also was looking for his first title, had chipped in from 51 feet on the 18th hole, to get to 12-under par and force the playoff.

But Duke made the better approach shot on the second extra hole, bouncing his ball in front of the flag and rolling it close.

"Yeah, it's been a long time," said Duke, who turned pro in 1994." I've been on the Canadian tour, the mini tours, Asian Tour, South American Tour, all of them; Web.com, and it's just great to be a part of this big family on the PGA Tour."

Duke, who came in ranked 144th in the world, is the sixth golfer in eight years to get his first PGA Tour win here, joining J.J. Henry (2006), Hunter Mahan (2007), Bubba Watson (2010), Fredrik Jacobsen (2011) and Marc Leishman last year.

Canadian Graham DeLaet finished a stroke back in third place with a 269. Watson finished fourth, two shots behind, after making a six on the par-3 16th hole.

"You gotta believe in yourself in everything you do," Duke said. "That's why those guys at the top are winning week in, week out because they believe they can do it. It's kind of one of those things once you finally do it it might come easier the next time. That's kind of the way I feel."

Duke wouldn't have been in position to win at all had luck not intervened on the 10th hole, when his ball ricocheted off a tree and onto the green to about 5 feet from the pin, allowing him to make birdie.

After a 17-foot birdie putt on the next hole, he made a 45-footer on the 13th hole, a shot that looked as though it might go past the hole to the right, before falling in.

He battled Watson for the lead down the back nine, until the former Masters champion found trouble on the 16th.

Watson put his drive into the water and put his next shot over the green.

He finished two strokes back in fourth place.

"The wind affected the first shot, and the wind didn't affect the next shot," Watson said. "I flew it three feet past the hole, which you can't do right now because the greens are so firm."

Duke looked as though he had the tournament sewn up after saving par on 18, despite a tee shot that went well right and onto a hill, and a second shot that went just over the green. He used a putter to put the ball within 2 feet, then sank the putt as the crowd roared for what they thought was a winning shot.

It looked even more secure when Stroud's second shot hit near the stick, but then rolled well off the green. That just set up the dramatic chip shot.

Stroud hit his tee shot over the cart path and 94 yards from the hole on the first playoff hole, while Duke's first shot jumped out of a fairway bunker and into the rough.

Duke bounced his second shot onto the green. Stroud's went into a greenside bunker.

Stroud chipped to 8 feet but had to watch as Green almost sank a long putt that would have ended it.

The two both struck the ball well on the second playoff hole, but Stroud missed a 25-foot birdie putt, and Duke made his short putt.

"I had three shots from 94 yards on 18, the exact same yardage, and I could not figure out a way to stop that ball," Stroud said. "Regulation, luckily, I chipped it in."

Watson, Charley Hoffman and DeLaet began the day tied for the lead, but 21 other players were within five strokes.

Webb Simpson shot a 65 to finish at 271, then headed home immediately after his round despite being just a stroke behind the leaders at the time. He said he knew the score wouldn't be good enough to win.

"I'm itching to get to my family, so I'm going to head to the airport," he said.

Justin Rose followed his U.S. Open win by shooting 6-under par for this tournament. He was in contention, with two birdies on his first seven holes, but didn't get another until the final hole and made three bogeys. He said fatigue was a factor.

"I'm still able to put one foot in front of the other," he said. "I still feel OK, but my guess is there's just a little bit of sharpness that I might be lacking."

No player has gone back-to-back after capturing the U.S. Open since 1997, when Ernie Els won the Buick Classic at the Westchester Country Club in New York.

Rose plans to play next week at Congressional before taking two weeks off to prepare for the British Open.

DeLaet a native of, Weyburn, Saskatchewan, said his thoughts this week have been with the people of Alberta, where widespread flooding is blamed for at least three deaths and forced thousands to evacuate.

He had the words "For Alberta" written on his cap Sunday.

The 2009 Canadian Tour player of the year pledged to donate $1,000 for every birdie he made to help the relief efforts.

PGA Tour Canada, a bank and a Canadian businessman all agreed to match the donation. He finished with three birdies on Sunday and nine for the weekend.

"Hopefully it puts a small dent in what they need," he said. "But our hearts are still with them."

Look up in the sky for a super sight: the biggest and brightest full moon of the year.

The so-called supermoon will appear 14 percent larger than normal early Sunday as our celestial neighbor swings closer to Earth. Some viewers may think the supermoon looks more dazzling, but it's actually an optical illusion. The moon looms larger on the horizon next to trees and buildings.

The moon will come within 222,000 miles of Earth and turn full around 7:30 a.m. EDT, making it the best time to view.

Factbox: Snowden latest accused by Obama administration of leaking

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. government's decision to charge former government contractor Edward Snowden with espionage marks the seventh time the Obama administration had attempted to punish those believed responsible for leaking classified information.

The following is a list of the seven cases and details surrounding them.

EDWARD SNOWDEN

Snowden, 30, is a former technical employee for Booz Allen Hamilton who was contracted to work for the National Security Agency.

In news media interviews, he has revealed that he was responsible for disclosing documents that showed that the top-secret National Security Agency has access to vast amounts of internet data such as emails, chat rooms and video from large companies such as Facebook and Google, under a government program known as Prism.

Snowden said the government had worked through the secret Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court to gather so-called metadata - such as the time, duration and telephone numbers called - on all calls carried by service providers such as Verizon.

According to a criminal complaint filed by the Justice Department that was dated June 14 but came to light on Friday, Snowden was accused of theft of government property, unauthorized communication of national defense information and willful communication of classified communications intelligence to an unauthorized person.

The latter two offenses fall under the U.S. Espionage Act and carry a sentence of up to 10 years in prison and fines.

FBI TRANSLATOR

Shamai Leibowitz was an FBI translator in 2009 when material that he heard while translating ended up on a blog. He reached an agreement with prosecutors before he was charged, and pleaded guilty in 2009 to one count of disclosing classified information. He was sentenced to 20 months in prison.

NSA WASTE

Former NSA official Thomas Drake was suspected in 2010 of revealing information about the agency's warrantless wiretapping program. He was indicted under the Espionage Act but said the only information he leaked was about waste in a NSA program, which he gave to the Baltimore Sun newspaper. The 10 felony counts were dropped when he pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor, and he received no prison time.

WIKILEAKS SOURCE

Bradley Manning, an Army private first class, is on trial in a Maryland military court, accused of passing more than 700,000 classified files to WikiLeaks in the biggest leak of secret documents in U.S. history. Manning, who pleaded guilty to 10 lesser charges in February, faces 21 additional counts including aiding the enemy and could get life in prison if convicted. The trial is expected to last through the summer.

NORTH KOREA INTEL

Stephen Kim, a U.S. State Department contract analyst, divulged to a Fox News reporter information on U.S. intelligence's assessment of how North Korea would respond to new sanctions. A grand jury indicted him in 2010 for disclosing defense information and making false statements, based in part on Fox News records the government seized without notice. He has pleaded not guilty and a trial date is possible in late 2013 or early 2014.

BOOK SOURCE

Former CIA officer Jeffrey Sterling was charged in 2011 with illegally disclosing classified information about Iran to James Risen, a New York Times reporter, for his book "State of War." The case is pending, as the government has tried unsuccessfully to force Risen to testify about his sources.

INTERROGATION LEAK

Former CIA officer John Kiriakou was charged in 2012 with divulging to journalists secret information about the CIA's interrogation program, including the identity of a covert officer. In an agreement with prosecutors, he pleaded guilty to one count and was sentenced to two and a half years in prison. He started serving the sentence in February.

Rich Dev, Poor Dev: Why some succeed where others fail - Talk Mobile

Both iOS and Android are rapidly approaching the million app mark. It's an absurd number of apps, and making a living in that vast sea is a tough prospect. Windows Phone and BlackBerry 10 are both over 100,000 apps, which on its own is also an absurd number. How is a developer supposed to get noticed when there are thousands upon thousands of other apps in the same store?

A developer can rely on search and word-of-mouth, but that's only going to get them so far. How is a developer supposed to get their app featured on the platform storefront? How are they supposed to tell users and publications about their app? And just how can they convince users to actually download the app? Is it better to be flashy or funny, informative or intriguing? Does it matter what audience you're targeting?

Just bobbing up and down in the waves of a million other apps is counting on an impossible stroke of luck to get noticed. Developers can be their own best advocates - but how does somebody who specializes in code and interface design come to understand what it takes to market their wares?

Let's get the conversation started!

Nissan shows off prototype electric car design, plans to race it at Le Mans

Nissan's just pulled the covers off its fancifully styled ZEOD RC race car that may eventually hit speeds of up to 300km/h (about 185mph). Though the acronym stands for "zero emissions, on demand," the vehicle could end up being a hybrid model that switches between gas and EV modes (as opposed to a pure electric car) by the time it hits Le Mans in 2014. Regardless, the company's Nismo racing division (creator of the all-electric Nismo RC) plans to enter it in the so-called Garage 56 class of the famed race, reserved for vehicles that showcase breakthrough technology. While the company flaunted the design at Circuit de la Sarthe in France today, the car won't start trials until later this summer, after which the final drivetrain will be chosen. Prior to hitting the track, though, it'll have its work cut out just to top Toyota's P001, the current EV lap-speed champ.

Keep Your Eyes on the Sky for Tonight's Gigantic Supermoon

Keep Your Eyes on the Sky for Tonight's Gigantic Supermoon

If there's ever a night to let the moon hit your eye like a big pizza pie, it's amore tonight. If you go gaze into the abyss over head this evening, you'll be treated to a supermoon,

It's a pretty self-explanatory concept (supermoon = big moon = duh) but the reason behind it is that we're getting a full moon at the same time that our lovely little lunar body happens to be the closest to Earth on its elliptical orbit. It's the coalescence of two separate cycles. NASA's got a good explainer on the ins and outs:

So if for some reason you need a reason to venture outside this evening and glance ever-so-slightly upwards to perhaps notice a heavenly body, there you have it. And if you happen to take any particularly poetic pictures, be sure to drop 'em below.

Facebook bug improperly revealed some personal information to 'friends'

HTC First

Approximately 6 million users affected; no evidence of malicious exploits of the bug

Facebook's security team made a post today to let users know of a bug that was discovered and fixed that has revealed some user's contact information to "friends" they did not intend to share with. The bug, which was pointed out to Facebook's White Hat Program by an independent entity, involved the combination of users uploading their contacts lists to find connections on Facebook, and the service's Download Your Information (DYI) tool. When users upload their contacts list to the site, Facebook analyzes it to recommend friends that you do not already have connections with, matching up phone numbers and email addresses to keep from offering duplicate contacts. When going through this analysis, Facebook inadvertently stored this personal information with user's profiles, allowing it to then be given to other users who downloaded their data with the DYI tool.

The end result, Facebook says, is that approximately 6 million Facebook users possibly had their phone numbers or email addresses made available to people who used the DYI tool to download their own (and therefore friends publicly available) Facebook data. For a vast majority of the users who had their data inappropriately shared, Facebook claims each individual address or number was only downloaded with the DYI tool once or twice. No other types of personal information was made available, and the DYI tool was not used by developers or advertisers, just individual users.

'Only God Forgives' Director Nicolas Winding Refn Teases an Unlikely Sequel

By Greg Gilman

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - Nicolas Winding Refn is hoping to re-team with his "Vahalla Rising" star, Mads Mikkelsen ("Hannibal"), for another bloody adventure seen through the single eye of a violent mute.

The Playlist spoke to the director at Thursday's North American premiere of his latest film, "Only God Forgives," and Refn revealed that Mikklesen's character, One-Eye, would live again - in Tokyo.

"There's a similarity between 'Valhalla Rising,' 'Drive' and 'Only God Forgives.' But in a way I had this idea of Mads Mikklesen to go back to the origins of this character," Refn said. "But make the movie in Tokyo."

The 2009 film followed a silent warrior of supernatural strength who escapes his Viking captors, and joins a group of knights journeying to the Holy Land to fight in the Crusades, only to end up on an island populated by savages.

It's hard to imagine how Refn could craft a sequel to the film which took place in 1000 A.D., but he teased further adventures of One-Eye would be "about the future."

It's also hard to imagine when the idea will actually come into fruition, as he's currently in the process of resurrecting "Barbarella" for television, as well as developing an all-female horror film to direct.

"Only God Forgives," the director's second collaboration with Ryan Gosling and follow up to "Drive," hits theaters on July 19.

Putin warns on arming Syrian rebels as conflict widens

By Alexei Anishchuk and Louis Charbonneau

ST PETERSBURG, Russia/UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - Russian President Vladimir Putin cautioned the West on Friday against arming Syrian rebel forces, which he said included "terrorist" groups, and warned that a swift exit by President Bashar al-Assad risked creating a dangerous power vacuum.

"If the United States ... recognizes one of the key Syrian opposition organizations, al-Nusra, as terrorist ... how can one deliver arms to those opposition members?" Putin told a panel with German Chancellor Angela Merkel. "Where will they end up? What role will they play?"

Putin defended his own country's arm sales to the embattled Syrian government as "entirely legal, repeating Russia's position that outsiders should not determine the fate of Assad and Syria.

"If Assad goes today, a political vacuum emerges - who will fill it?" Putin said at a later news conference with Merkel. "Maybe those terrorist organizations. Nobody wants this - but how can it be avoided? After all, they are armed and aggressive."

The only solution, he said, was an international peace conference that Russia and the United States are seeking to convene.

A U.N. human rights investigator warned on Friday that an increased flow of arms to Syria's government and rebel forces would likely result in increased war crimes in a two-year civil war that has killed some 93,000 people.

"States who provide arms have responsibilities in terms of the eventual use of those arms to commit ... war crimes or crimes against humanity," said Paulo Pinheiro, chairman of a U.N. commission of inquiry on rights violations in Syria.

With Russia and Iran arming Assad's forces, and Lebanon's Hezbollah fighters joining the war on his behalf, Western powers have agreed to step up aid to the mainly Sunni rebels.

U.S. President Barack Obama, citing the Syrian government's alleged use of chemical weapons, decided last week to provide military aid to rebels fighting to overthrow Assad.

Obama said on Friday the United States was leaving about 700 combat-equipped troops in Jordan after a training exercise there, at the request of Amman. The United States previously decided to leave Patriot missiles and warplanes in the country.

Jordan fears a spillover of the Syrian war into its territory, where an estimated half million Syrian refugees have fled to escape the bloodshed.

With both countries keeping an eye on the war, Obama told Congress in a letter that the troops would remain until the security situation became such that they were no longer needed.

The European Union lifted its arms embargo on Syria last month. Britain and France have spoken in favor of potentially arming the rebels, but have not yet taken any decisions.

Western powers had been reluctant in the past to arm the rebels because of concerns about the rising strength of Sunni Islamist insurgents who have pledged loyalty to al Qaeda.

France sent 16 metric tons (1 metric ton = 1.102 tons) of medical aid to northern Syria on Friday, including antidotes for nerve agents, as rebels prepared to face an assault on the city of Aleppo by Assad's forces.

GROWING MIDDLE EAST DIVIDE

A U.N. spokeswoman said senior U.S. and Russian officials would meet with the international mediator on Syria in Geneva on Tuesday to discuss a peace conference.

An international peace conference is not expected to occur before August after G8 leaders clashed with Russia over the nature of a transitional government.

Foreign ministers of the Friends of Syria group of nations, which backs the opposition, will meet in Qatar on Saturday to discuss how to help the rebel Free Syrian Army defend the northern city of Aleppo.

The insurgents have suffered a recent series of battlefield setbacks and are besieged on the outskirts of Damascus by advancing government forces, who have begun to regain the upper hand.

Two years of fighting have dragged Syria's neighbors into a deadly confrontation between Shi'ite Iran supporting Assad, whose Alawite sect derives from Shi'ite Islam, and Sunni Arab Gulf nations backing the rebels.

In Beirut, the Lebanese army sealed off the parliamentary district on Friday and threatened stern action against violence after a night of unrest triggered by the Syrian war and political paralysis at home. The fighting in Syria has driven half a million Syrian refugees into Lebanon.

Sectarian violence has intensified in Lebanon because of the Syrian conflict across the border, where Lebanon's Shi'ite militia Hezbollah and Lebanese Sunni gunmen have joined opposing sides of the war.

A Cabinet minister in Iraq's Shi'ite-led government said on Friday that thousands of Shi'ite Muslims from Iraq and beyond would take up arms against Sunni al Qaeda 'savages" if fellow Shi'ites or their shrines came under further attack.

Hadi al-Amiri, Iraq's transport minister, told Reuters it would be impossible to "sit idle while the Shi'ites are being attacked," while the United States and Western allies arm and finance the mainly Sunni rebels.

Spanish police arrested eight people on Friday in Spain's North African enclave of Ceuta on suspicion of recruiting fighters for a branch of al Qaeda in Syria.

On Tuesday, NASA announced an?Asteroid Grand Challenge that solicits the public?s help in proposing asteroid-wrangling strategies for the agency?s Asteroid Initiative.

"NASA already is working to find asteroids that might be a threat to our planet, and while we have found 95 percent of the large asteroids near the?Earth's orbit, we need to find all those that might be a threat to Earth," said NASA Deputy Administrator Lori Garver, in a press release. "This Grand Challenge is focused on detecting and characterizing asteroids and learning how to deal with potential threats. We will also harness public engagement, open innovation and citizen science to help solve this global problem."

NASA?s Asteroid Initiative includes the capture and redirection of a 500-ton near-Earth asteroid into a stable orbit as well as missions to send astronauts to asteroids. According to the initiative?s current timeline, NASA will assess asteroid candidates until 2016, launch a mission to the asteroid in 2017, capture the asteroid in 2019, and send it into trans-lunar orbit in 2021. Throughout that timeline, NASA will test the unmanned Orion spacecraft, in hopes of sending a manned mission aboard the craft in 2021.

That timeline is ahead of the president?s goal to send humans to an asteroid by 2025 and a manned mission to Mars by the 2030s. Efforts to develop the technology to deflect asteroids have become particularly meaningful since a meteor plunged to the earth near the Russian city of Chelyabinsk in February, killing no one but reminding us of our vulnerability here on Earth.

The space agency?s outline for how it will capture an asteroid is still vague ? and that?s why it wants the public?s help.

The Asteroid Grand Challenge is an effort to develop collaborations with government agencies, international partners, industry, and academia, as well as citizen scientists. At the same time, NASA has also put out a Request for Information, which will be open for 30 days for the agency?s potential partners to submit their asteroid-grabbing ideas.

NASA is asking $17.7 billion from the president for the fiscal year 2014, $105 million of which would go to the Asteroid Initiative.?

This is not the only Grand Challenge from the space agency. NASA has also requested the public's help on open questions like space colonization, economic space travel, and telepresence in space.

Asteroids champ John McAllister, are you up for NASA's challenge?

BenQ MW663

The BenQ MW663 has a lot going for it as a data projector for business or classroom use: good brightness and resolution, solid data image quality, portability, a good selection of connectivity ports, a substantial zoom ratio, and 3D capability among them. What's more, it provides better video quality than the vast majority of DLP-based data projectors.

The projector measures 4.9 by 12.3 by 9.6 inches (HWD) and weighs 6.1 pounds, making it quite portable. It has a WXGA (1,280 by 800) native resolution, and a rated brightness of 3,000 lumens. It is black on the top and the base, with white sides and rounded corners. It has metal focus and zoom rings inset behind the lens; the zoom ratio is a useful 1.3:1.

The MW663 has a good range of connectivity choices, including HDMI; 2 VGA ports (which can double as component video); monitor-out; S-video; 3 RCA jacks for composite video/audio; audio-in; audio-out; serial, a mini-USB type B port for connecting with a computer for USB Display (which emulates what's on your computer screen) as well as for downloads, and a USB type A port for running a presentation from a USB thumb drive. (File types supported are JPEG, JPG, BMP, PNG, GIF and TIFF). An optional Wi-Fi adapter, which plugs into the USB A port, is available for $50.

Data Image Testing
The MW663 projected an image to fill our test screen, about 60 inches on a diagonal, from about 6 feet away. The image stood up to a good amount of ambient light without notable degradation.

In data image testing, using the using the DisplayMate suite, the BenQ MW663's image quality proved suitable for typical business use. Though some colors were on the dull side (yellows and reds), the projector showed good color balance, with suitably neutral grays throughout the range from very light to very dark. The only traces of tinting I noticed was some mild yellow fringing at the borders between certain dark and light areas. When using a VGA connection, there was slight pixel jitter in some images that tend to bring it out; switching to HDMI eliminated it. In our text testing, the MW663's performance was typical of a data projector; there was some blurring at the two smallest white-on-black type sizes, with the smallest size not readily readable.

Video and Audio
Video quality was suitable for showing longer clips as part of a presentation, and you could even use it to show movies. Although a few images showed traces of the rainbow effect?little red-green-blue flashes, usually in bright areas against a dark background?it's milder than is typical for a DLP projector and unlikely to be distracting, even to people sensitive to the effect. Color balance and skin tones were good. There was occasional loss of detail in bright areas. Though the MW663's video quality doesn't approach that of a good home-theater projector, it's better than most data projectors.

Audio from its single 2-watt speaker was of modest volume, loud enough for a smallish room, and of reasonable quality.

The MW663's expected lamp life is up to 6,500 hours. EcoBlank mode lets presenters easily take a break, blanking the screen out and lowering energy consumption up to 70% while it's paused. The projector will also automatically enter EcoBlank mode after 3 minutes without a signal. SmartEco mode automatically adjusts lamp brightness, depending on lighting conditions.

This projector is 3D-capable, with support for 3D Blu-ray via HDMI as well as Nvidia 3DTV Play, enabling it to display 3D content from Nvidia 3D Vision. Active-shutter 3D glasses are not included, and can cost more than $70 per pair. You may be hard-pressed in outfitting a classroom with them, as you could easily end up paying several times the cost of the projector itself.

This projector is the same resolution and essentially the same brightness as the Editors' Choice NEC NP-M311W, a 3,100-lumen WXGA data projector. Like the NEC NP-M311W, the MW663 has excellent video quality for a data projector, though its data image quality isn't quite as good as the NEC NP-M311W's and its audio is softer. The MW663's rated bulb life, though impressive for a data projector, can't match the NEC NP-M311W's 8,000 hours in Eco mode, and its zoom, though ample, is short of the NEC NP-M311W's exceptional 1.7:1 zoom range. However, the MW663 is 3D-capable, though, while the LCD-based NP-M311 isn't.

The Editors' Choice ViewSonic PJD6683ws is a short-throw projector with excellent data image quality. But while the MW663 showed less of the rainbow effect than a typical DLP data projector, with the PJD6683ws it was more pronounced than usual, making the BenQ better for video.

The BenQ MW663 is easy to recommend as a projector for business or classroom use, offering solid data image quality, very good video, 3D capability, long lamp life, and a good port selection. Although other projectors with similar performance are more feature rich, the MW663 provides a good mix of attributes at a competitive price.

Gun control backfires? Rick Perry to lure blue-state gunmakers to Texas.

Strong gun control laws were recently passed in Connecticut and New York, so Gov. Rick Perry will visit gunmakers in both states this week to try to bring them to gun-friendly Texas.

The shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., have brought into high relief one of the anachronisms of the American economy: Some of the biggest and most influential makers of firearms in the United States are located in some of its bluest ? and most antigun ? states.

That is a fact that Gov. Rick Perry (R) of Texas hopes to turn to his advantage this week.

He is scheduled to visit Colt's Manufacturing, which has been in Connecticut since 1847, and Mossberg & Sons of North Haven, Conn., the largest maker of shotguns in the US, among other manufacturers and suppliers in Connecticut and New York.

The visits are the most public move in discussions that have been ongoing for some time, officials say. "We've been reaching out to them via letters and the governor's talked on the phone to some of them," Lucy Nashed, the governor's spokeswoman, told the Connecticut Post. "This is something he's been doing for a long time ? talking to companies in different states."

Forcing the issue are sweeping gun-control measures passed first by New York then by Connecticut in response to the Sandy Hook shootings. When Connecticut lawmakers were considering the bills in March, Colt shut down manufacturing for a day and bused 400 workers to the statehouse in a show of force. Other manufacturers did the same.

?We exhausted ourselves testifying during public sessions at the state capital, reaching out to journalists, busing our employees to Hartford and more, but in the end it didn?t matter. They wrote the bill in secret,? Mark Malkowski, president of Stag Arms in New Britain, Conn., told Forbes.

The tone of Gov. Dannel Malloy (D) has frayed the state's relationship with gunmakers further. Speaking on CNN's "State of the Union" after he signed the bill, Governor Malloy said: "What this is about is the ability of the gun industry to sell as many guns to as many people as possible ? even if they are deranged, even if they are mentally ill, even if they have a criminal background. They don?t care. They want to sell guns.?

Big freighter docks with station

Europe's big freighter, the Albert Einstein ATV, has docked with the International Space Station (ISS).

The 20-tonne vehicle hooked onto the back of the 415km-high orbiting platform at 14:07 GMT.

It is carrying food, water, equipment and fuel for the six live-aboard astronauts on the ISS.

Albert Einstein will also provide some useful extra space during its four-month stay, and use its engines to push the platform higher into the sky.

The station has a tendency to drift back towards the Earth over time, and the European freighter with its powerful thrusters can provide an altitude boost.

European Space Agency (Esa) astronaut Luca Parmitano and Russian cosmonaut Aleksandr Misurkin sat in the rear of the station to watch Albert Einstein's approach.

They had the ability to command the vehicle to retreat if they had any concerns about its behaviour, but Albert Einstein performed flawlessly, docking over the Pacific Ocean just east of Japan.

The freighter - also known by its generic name of Automated Transfer Vehicle (ATV) - was launched from Europe's Kourou spaceport on an Ariane 5 on 5 June.

It is the fourth such vehicle produced by Esa and European industry. The cargo ships form part of the subscription Europe pays to belong to the ISS project.

One more vehicle is planned to fly next year before production ceases at Bremen, Germany.

The ATV assembly line will then be turned over to building a propulsion unit for US space agency's (Nasa) future crew ship, Orion.

This capsule will carry astronauts beyond the space station to destinations such as asteroids and Mars. It will need a "service module" to push it through space and Nasa has engaged Esa to adapt ATV technology for the purpose.

Albert Einstein will stay attached to the ISS until late October.

Astronauts will gradually remove its "Russian water", air and 2.5 tonnes of dry cargo, starting on Tuesday next week. It will all be replaced with rubbish that has built up on the platform.

When the freighter leaves the station, it will take this refuse on a destructive dive into the Earth's atmosphere.

Bus tour takes gun-control fight on the road

The ceremony kicking off the Newtown, Conn., bus tour on gun control. (WIll Holt)

Six months after the Sandy Hook Elementary School shootings, victims? families, elected officials and faith leaders gathered in Newtown, Conn., for the launch of a nationwide bus tour to step up the pressure on politicians for stronger gun-control laws and to commemorate those who were killed.

At the pretour ceremony on Friday morning, crowds gathered in front of Newtown?s Edmond Town Hall. There, a ticker counted the number of people killed by gun violence since the Sandy Hook shootings that claimed the lives of 20 students and six educators. When the ceremony commenced, that number was 6,003.

?Over 6,000 have been killed by guns in six months alone,? said Steve Barton, a survivor of the July 2012 shootings in Aurora, Colo., and a speaker at Friday?s ceremony. ?More than 3,000 will be killed while this bus is on the road if we don?t do anything.?

Barton, who works with the nonprofit advocacy group Mayors Against Illegal Guns, also said, ?Today?s a day of remembrance. Not just for the victims of Newtown, but for the 33 people who are killed every day by gun violence.?

Officially titled ?No More Names: The National Drive to Reduce Gun Violence,? the bus tour was organized by Mayors Against Illegal Guns, which was co-founded in 2006 by New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Boston Mayor Thomas Menino.

The 100-day tour will eventually travel through 25 states. While going cross-country, gun violence survivors and their family will press members of Congress to take another look at gun-control legislation and to reconsider April?s failed gun-control legislation in the Senate.

That legislation, called the Manchin-Toomey bill?named after its sponsors, Sens. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., and Pat Toomey, R-Pa.?would have extended background checks to all commercial gun purchases in the U.S. It failed 54-46 on April 17.

Among those present at Friday?s ceremony was Jillian Soto, whose older sister Victoria was one of the teachers killed at Sandy Hook.

?We wanted to do something about this issue, so that she wouldn?t have died for no reason,? said Soto of her sister. ?We threw ourselves into the fight.?

After the failure of the Manchin-Toomey bill, Soto said she ?started to feel discouraged. ? But we?d had the conversation. That?s something we conquered, just to get there.?

Soto, who described the National Rifle Association and other gun rights organizations as ?bullies,? said she would be joining the bus tour whenever she could manage. Of Mayors Against Illegal Guns, she said, ?It?s an honor to know that you have this amazing group of people who aren?t willing to let people forget.?

While the morning was marked by somberness and grief, there was nevertheless a sense of resolve about getting gun-control legislation back into the Senate.

Gilles Rousseau, the father of slain teacher Lauren Rousseau, said he was there ?to help with the cause. ? It?s not asking for much, but that?s what we?re trying to do."

The same sense of mission was present when Carlee Soto spoke to the crowd. Carlee, the younger sister of Victoria and Jillian, asked the people gathered for a 26-second moment of silence at the start of the ceremony ?to join with the 26 who have fallen.?

On Wednesday, the Soto sisters met with President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden in Washington, D.C., to discuss efforts in the push for new gun-control legislation.

?We went to Washington, D.C., to fight for our loved ones and fight for everyone else who?s been killed by gun violence,? said Carlee after the ceremony. ?President Obama told us yesterday that this might not come in a week, next month or even a year. But he?s going to keep fighting and so are we.?

According to a Washington Post-ABC News poll released just weeks before the Manchin-Toomey vote, 90 percent of Americans support expanded background checks on gun purchases.

?This is about common sense,? said First Selectman Ed Edelson of Southbury, a community just across the Housatonic River from Sandy Hook. ?The Constitution is not a suicide pact.?

The bus tour will first head north to Concord, N.H., and Augusta, Maine. Locations in other states will be announced during the week of the stop.

Helping pet owners make tough choices

June 14, 2013 ? Perhaps the hardest part of owning a pet is making difficult decisions when a beloved companion becomes seriously ill.

That's why Michigan State University researchers are developing a new tool to help people assess their ailing pets' quality of life, a key factor in decisions about when to order life-prolonging procedures and when an animal's suffering means it's time to let go.

In a new paper in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association, MSU researchers describe a survey they created to help pet owners monitor the quality of life of dogs undergoing chemotherapy for cancer.

Veterinarians can use their training, experience and scientific knowledge to objectively assess an animal's quality of life in response to treatment, said lead author Maria Iliopoulou, an MSU-trained veterinarian and a doctoral student in the Department of Community, Agriculture, Recreation and Resource Studies. But outside the vet's office, pet owners rely on their own subjective impressions of the animal's well-being.

"Dogs obviously can't tell you how they're feeling, and sometimes pet owners may not know what changes in canine behavior they should pay attention to," Iliopoulou said. "By having this tool, we can help owners see what's really going on with the animal to improve decision making and facilitate the human-animal bond under the challenging circumstances of cancer diagnosis and treatment."

For the study, dog owners completed a questionnaire at the time of diagnosis about how the animal was behaving then and how they typically behaved six months prior. Follow-up questionnaires filled out three and six weeks later documented changes in behavior as the dogs underwent chemo. Meanwhile, the veterinarians filled out shorter surveys based on their observations.

"We wanted to see if the owner and the clinician would agree," Iliopoulou said. "The owner knows the pet, and the clinician knows the science. That's what the survey is all about, to identify components of a good quality of life and verbalize them in an understandable way to facilitate client and clinician communication regarding patient-care decisions."

As it turned out, responses to the questions by owners and veterinarians were fairly well-matched. That finding told the researchers the questionnaire was a helpful way to find common ground for treatment decisions.

The survey responses matched each other -- and matched scientific data from the dogs' medical records -- particularly closely on three questions involving changes in the dogs' play behavior, clinical signs of disease and canine happiness as perceived by the owner. Iliopoulou said the agreement on those questions makes them effective indicators of quality of life that can be used in animal cancer clinics, and in future studies.

With 29 participants, all at the MSU Animal Cancer Care Clinic, it's hard to draw broad conclusions from the relatively small pilot study. Still, Iliopoulou said the results were significant enough that she's planning a follow-up study with hundreds of dogs and owners. She also hopes the survey can eventually be adapted for animals with other illnesses.

Scientists explode the myth about running injuries

June 14, 2013 ? If you are healthy and plan to start running for the first time, it is perfectly all right to put on a pair of completely ordinary 'neutral' running shoes without any special support. Even though your feet overpronate when you run -- i.e. roll inwards.

There appears to be no risk that overpronation or underpronation can lead to running injuries through using neutral shoes for this special group of healthy beginners.

This is the result of a study conducted at Aarhus University which has just been published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine under the title "Foot pronation is not associated with increased injury risk in novice runners wearing a neutral shoe."

Healthy runners monitored for 12 months

Researchers have followed 927 healthy novice runners with different pronation types for a full year. All study participants received the same model of neutral running shoe, regardless of whether they had neutral foot pronation or not. During the study period, 252 people suffered an injury, and the runners ran a total of 163,401 km.

"We have now compared runners with neutral foot pronation with the runners who pronate to varying degrees, and our findings suggest that overpronating runners do not have a higher risk of injury than anyone else," says physiotherapist and PhD student Rasmus ?. Nielsen from Aarhus University, who has conducted the study together with a team of researchers from Aarhus University, Aarhus University Hospital, Aalborg University Hospital and the Netherlands.

"This is a controversial finding as it has been assumed for many years that it is injurious to run in shoes without the necessary support if you over/underpronate," he says. Rasmus ?. Nielsen emphasises that the study has not looked at what happens when you run in a pair of non-neutral shoes, and what runners should consider with respect to pronation and choice of shoe once they have already suffered a running injury.

Focus on other risk factors

The researchers are now predicting that in future we will stop regarding foot pronation as a major risk factor in connection with running injuries among healthy novice runners.

Instead, they suggest that beginners should consider other factors such as overweight, training volume and old injuries to avoid running injuries.

"However, we still need to research the extent to which feet with extreme pronation are subject to a greater risk of running injury than feet with normal pronation," says Rasmus ?. Nielsen.

Three key results

In the British Journal of Sports Medicine, the researchers point to three key results:

  • The study contradicts the current assumption that over/underpronation in the foot leads to an increased risk of running injury if you run in a neutral pair of running shoes.
  • The study shows that the risk of injury was the same for runners after the first 250 km, irrespective of their pronation type.
  • The study shows that the number of injuries per 1,000 km of running was significantly lower among runners who over/underpronate than among those with neutral foot pronation.
