Best and worst dressed of the London Opening Ceremony - Blogs

rawImage.png

Our old friend, Leryn Franco, aka the Hot Paraguayan, kicks off Fourth-Place Medal?s list of the best and worst dressed delegations of the 2012 Olympic Opening Ceremony.

As always, our rankings our completely arbitrary. We should note that we pay special attention to national identity in this list. It?s all dependent on who?s wearing what. If the Americans rocked the Swedes outfit, it?d be a disaster ? not as big as the Ralph Lauren scarf/beret debacle, but pretty bad. Because they?re Swedes, however, thick, horizontal stripes and shorts works. They?re Scandinavian. They can pull off anything!

[ Photos: London 2012 Opening Ceremony ]

Onto the list! Our picks for the best and worst lead those respective categories. Everything else is in no particular order.

The best

The Netherlands

You can?t pull off orange pants. I can?t pull off orange pants. Only Dutch athletes can pull off orange pants.

Poland

Wimbledon finalist Agnieszka Radwanska was a vision in rose leading the Polish delegation.

Fiji

A rule to live by: Never insult a man in a grass skirt.

Sweden

A Sig Ep or Tri Delt wearing this in a college bar would rightfully earn your derision. But there?s something about the Swedish flag transformed into a rugby that?s working.

Canada

Cuts down on the ?where are you from? questions in the Olympic Village. The simplicity is glorious.

Germany

Over 200 countries marched at the Olympics. All of them would have earned ?worst dressed? status with these Opening Ceremony uniforms. But these are the Germans and there?s something so decidedly un-German about wearing baby colors.

Cook Islands

Ceremonial garb tends to fall in the middle of these lists. One on hand, we?ll never criticize tradition. On the other, they?re rarely fashion forward, as Tim Gunn might say. These Cook Islands outfits are different enough to buck that trend and make the list.

Paraguay

The silhouette is so now. That?s why we like it. Promise.

The worst

Great Britain

Are they in Abba? A cult? A recreation of Puffy and Mase in the ?Mo Money, Mo Problems? video? If the English do as well in the Olympics as they did in looking the most ridiculous at their Opening Ceremony, then it?s going to be one happy fortnight in London.

Mexico

Positives: Sombreros. Negatives: Everything else.

Cuba

If the Olympics don?t work out, a gig announcing ?Monday Night Football? in 1974 could.

Finland

Tennis shoes and skirts are only acceptable if you?re walking from work to the subway.

Argentina

Were those outfits punishment for losing the Falklands War?

Belgium

Not that these outfits are so bad ? they?re only marginally bad. They lead to one big question though: Why does one woman in the middle have on red tights and another have on a red skirt? WHY ARE THEY DIFFERENT?

Denmark

Somewhere in Hollywood, a studio executive saw this picture and started writing a pitch for ?The Sound of Music II: The Von Trapp Sisters Grow Up and Go To London.?

United States

Fourth-Place Medal has covered these Ralph Lauren atrocities at length, so we won?t waste any more text now. Kidding. They look like they?re posing for third-grade class pictures at an elementary school in Cherbourg. Side note without snark: Great move by Kobe Bryant to walk with random Team USA members rather than his basketball brethren. That?s what the Olympics are all about. That and berets.

UK stocks post modest gains on stimulus hopes

LONDON (Reuters) - Britain's top shares were modestly higher on Friday, consolidating the strong gains seen in the previous session on hopes that central bank meetings next week will bring new steps to help the struggling global economy.

Another crop of UK bluechip results provided the main direction early on, with the numbers once again proving mixed, keeping investors uncertain on the overall earnings picture.

Barclays was the top FTSE 100 gainer, up 5.1 percent, after the bank beat expectations with an underlying half-year profit of more than 4 billion pounds, boosted by a strong top-line performance from its investment banking unit.

"We see these results as supportive given the discounted valuation ... While we recognise that post significant management change and the Libor issue Q2 is somewhat backward looking, the resilience versus peers in the investment bank in Q2 and the action on costs is encouraging," RBC Europe analyst Fiona Swafield said in a note.

Barclays was among Thomson Reuters StarMine's lowest ranked companies for earnings quality in the FTSE 100 with a score of 12 out of 100 prior to the release of these results, compared with the sector median of 38.

That means its earnings growth is expected to be difficult to sustain over the next 12 months based on what has contributed to those earnings in the recent past.

Other blue chip banks were also in demand, providing the main support for the FTSE 100 index as the sector reporting season continued, and with investors' risk appetite boosted by the hopes for possible fresh stimulus measures, or at least hints of them, from the Federal Reserve, European Central Bank, and Bank of England meetings all due next week.

Miners also lent their strength to the blue chips, as copper prices pushed higher on the hopes of new measures to boost global economies.

But Anglo American missed out on the mining sector's gains. It shed 2.4 percent after profits dropped almost 40 percent in the first half of the year as faltering global economic growth hit the prices of key commodities like iron ore and platinum, but failed to bring down costs.

    PEARSON POOR

Pearson was the top blue chip faller, down 4.8 percent after the British education and publishing group said 2012 was turning out to be tougher than it expected. Profit fell by 10 percent in the first half, although it said it could still achieve growth for the full year.

At 0803 GMT, the FTSE 100 index was up 3.05 points, or 0.1 percent, at 5,576.21, having reached 5,595.04 in early trade, with the 5,600 big figure proving a barrier.

The blue chip index jumped 1.4 percent on Thursday after European Central Bank President Mario Draghi pledged to do whatever was needed to preserve the euro, boosting hopes for more decisive action on the currency bloc's debt crisis.

"Yesterday, risk appetite received a much needed bump-up by Draghi saying the central bank will do whatever it takes to preserve the euro," said Ishaq Siddiqi, Market Strategist at ETX Capital.

"But despite the gains spurred by the Draghi-inspired rally, room for further upside appears to be capped given that there has been no new developments on the (euro zone bailout fund) ESM's long-term function, while caution looms ahead of U.S. economic and corporate data out today."

The second reading for second-quarter U.S. GDP is due out at 1230 GMT, and the final reading of the July Reuters/University of Michigan consumer sentiment report scheduled for 1355 GMT.

No major British data is sheduled for release on Friday.

Ninth Circuit: "Non-Consumer" Confusion Relevant to "Likelihood of ...

I'm a bit delayed in blogging about this opinion and, to be perfectly frank, I didn't find the facts of particular interest.? Nonetheless, there were a couple of issues addressed by the Ninth Circuit that are worth at least a brief description.

This was a trademark case involving, as the case name suggests, a dispute over various REARDEN-formative marks, which apparently were inspired by the "Hank Rearden" character in Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged.

The first issue of interest was the Ninth Circuit's discussion of the "use in commerce" requirement for service marks, not because the opinion broke new ground but because it is an issue I still often hear discussed even among trademark attorneys.

The court emphasized that there are two elements required for a service mark to be used in commerce--the mark must be "used or displayed in the sale or advertising of services" and "the services are rendered in commerce"--both of which must be satisfied.? Evidence of actual sales, or the lack of such evidence, is not necessarily dispositive of the "use in commerce" determination, the court noted.? Rather, non-sales activities, like solicitation of potential customers, are relevant to the "totality of the circumstances" analysis used in the Ninth Circuit to determine whether both prongs of the "use in commerce" requirement have been met.

The second legal issue involved the "evidence of actual confusion" factor of the Sleekcraft "likelihood of confusion" factors used in the Ninth Circuit in trademark cases.? Specifically, the Ninth Circuit concluded that "non-consumer confusion" may be relevant to the "likelihood of confusion" inquiry "in three specific and overlapping circumstances" including:

where there is confusion on the part of:? (1) potential consumers; (2) non-consumers whose confusion could create an inference that consumers are likely to be confused; and (3) non-consumers whose confusion could influence consumers.? In all three instances, the non-consumer confusion bears a relationship to the existence of confusion on the part of consumers themselves.

The court found support for its conclusion that "non-consumer" confusion may be relevant in:? (1) the well-established relevance of confusion on the part of potential consumers; (2) the prior use of "non-consumer" confusion as a proxy for consumer confusion (citing TrafficSchool.com, Inc. v. Edriver Inc., 653 F.3d 820 (9th Cir. 2011)); and (3) prior decisions recognizing that "non-consumer" confusion can contribute to consumer confusion as in the case of "post-purchase confusion" (citing Karl Storz Endoscopy-Am., Inc. v. Surgical Tech., Inc., 285 F.3d 848 (9th Cir. 2002)).

Summing it up, the court stated that:

it appears to be a matter of basic common sense to recognize the very real possibility that confusion on the part of at least certain non-consumers could either:? (1) turn into actual consumer confusion (i.e., potential consumers); (2) serve as an adequate proxy or substitute for evidence of actual consumer confusion (i.e., non-consumers whose confusion could create an inference of consumer confusion); or (3) otherwise contribute to confusion on the part of the consumers themselves (i.e., non-consumers whose confusion could influence consumer perceptions and decision-making).

The case cite is Rearden LLC v. Rearden Commerce, Inc., No. 10-16665 (9th Cir. June 27, 2012).

Bad football analogies and prostate cancer news releases ? THE ...

According to a media release issued today by the University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC), ?Scientists have identified what may be the Peyton Manning of prostate cancer. It?s a protein that?s essential for the disease to execute its game plan.?

Peyton Manning is a great quarterback ? and offers his fans great entertainment. While many of us may hope that he has fully recovered from his prior injuries and will once again be able to demonstrate his complete set of skills as a master controller of the gridiron with the start of the National Football League?s season in September, any comparison of those skills to the activities of a protein called paxillin is premature ? and debatable at best.

The URMC media release describes work published by Sen et al. in the Journal of Clinical Investigation. According to the original article, paxillin appears to be necessary for the normal growth of human prostate cancer cell xenografts. It may also be necessary to the metastasis of prostate cancer in man. (This has yet to be proven.) It is therefore a potential biomarker for the spread of prostate cancer in man and a possible therapeutic target for the treatment of progressive forms of prostate cancer. In other words, if we could control the expression of paxillin in men with prostate cancer we might be able to better control the spread of the disease.

It will be immediately apparent to any football fan that most opposing teams have failed miserably at controlling Peyton Manning over the years!

Alas, the media release also quotes a senior author of the paper as follows: ?The holy grail in prostate cancer is to figure out why cells stop responding to hormone therapy.?

Well ? not exactly ? The holy grail in prostate cancer would be to find a way to stop the progression of prostate cancer long before hormone therapy was ever required ? and with none of the deleterious effects on sexual function (and other side effects) inherent to the use of hormone therapy!

However, if we can find a way to stop the effects of paxillin such that hormone therapy worked for longer in the men with the most aggressive forms of prostate cancer, that would certainly be a step along the path toward a cure. In the meantime, let?s try to keep bad football analogies out of the prostate cancer news.

Tertiary care centers like URMC really ought to want to put their scientific findings on a slightly higher plane than the gridiron. This sort of breathless hype about an interesting scientific finding is the exact reverse of the debacle at Penn State. At Penn State the football program supposedly became more important than the education of 99.5 percent of those attending the university; it appears that at URMC the research findings of the faculty now have to be explained in language that might (perhaps, but not probably) be comprehensible to the 0.5 percent of those attending the university that are actively involved on the gridiron!

Book Review: NYC Rental Bible | My First Apartment

When I was asked to review the new ebook, NYC Rental Bible, it felt like a familiar assignment; I?m well acquainted with informational booklets. This because, at every stage of my life, my father has given me a book on how to do that which I am about to do: a book on how to study, how to drive a car, how to write a college essay, how to manage money, how to purchase a condo, and so forth. I think, on some level, these gifts make us both feel a little better: he feels more confident in my future decisions, while I, despite my grumbling, usually read the book, since I know that it?ll provide an overview of the issues at hand, it?s usually eminently browse-able, and it just might help me avoid an embarrassing beginner?s mistake.

And so this is how I approached NYC Rental Bible: A Compilation of Real Estate Secrets from Top NYC Brokers. It should give a good outline of the process of finding a rental in NYC, and a few insights to a total novice. And, since New York real estate is a universe unto its own, if you want a general I?m-in-any-city-looking-for-an-apartment advice, you shouldn?t expect to get it here. Instead, the NYC Rental Bible would be focused exclusively on the specifics of New York City apartment hunting.

?.Except that one of the first things I noticed is that the book ignores one of the most common ways that twenty-somethings find apartments in New York, which is via a ?share.? A ?share? simply means you?re a person looking to move into a two-, three-, or four-bedroom apartment, but you don?t have roommates to move in with you ? you?d rather move into an already established place, taking one individual?s spot, while the other present renters stay and you become their new roommate. Trying to navigate this fascinating, woolly world is a wonder unto itself ?? and it?s also one of the cheapest, easiest ways to find a place in New York. But, because brokers have a vested interest in you not doing this, since it provides them with no commission, it?s not even mentioned the NYC Rental Bible, which was a little disappointing, though somewhat understandable.

Another telling error: in the breakdown of different apartment configurations common in New York City, the much-hated railroad apartment is conspicuously absent. How could this be?? However, in terms of misses, the book?s glossary takes the cake. Usually a glossary is a prime reason to purchase a how-to, reference-type book when starting something new, since it lets you quickly and easily study-up on jargon. However, if you buy NYC Rental Bible for the glossary, the joke?s on you: the ?glossary? only has three entries. Yes, that?s right: three. They are: ?exclusive listing,? ?limited listing,? and ?open listing?. ? And that, ladies and gentlemen, is your glossary!

Regardless, I was ready to tepidly recommend this pamphlet-like ebook to neophytes to the New York City rental world. I figured, why not drop three or four dollars ? or maybe even eight or ten ? to get some rudimentary, sometimes-good information before you start your NYC apartment hunt? ?But then I went to the book?s webpage and saw the actual asking amount: $39.00!? ?Holy s@*t!? I thought, ?You could go to a Death Cab for Cutie concert at that price!? Which, ultimately, is what I recommend you do: save your money for something enjoyable and check out our FREE?rental ad-speak translator to get started with your NYC rental hunt.

AUA Responds to New Prostate Cancer Intervention Vs - Cancer Kick

    LINTHICUM, Md., July 25, 2012 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ ?
In response to new data from the Prostate Cancer Intervention vs. Observation Trial (PIVOT) released today in the New England Journal of Medicine, the American Urological Association (AUA) released the following statement, attributable to the AUA Chair of Health Policy David F. Penson, MD, MPH, a prostate cancer expert at Vanderbilt University:

?Though on the surface, these new data from PIVOT may imply that radical prostatectomy did not significantly reduce mortality in men with localized prostate cancer when compared with observation, the data do show a demonstrated positive effect in prostate cancer-specific mortality (as well as a trend in overall mortality) in high-risk patients. This trend is evident, despite the fact that PIVOT is an undersized study (its enrollment of 731 men is not large enough to give an adequate confidence interval) and suffers from other flaws that impact its ability to fully assess the effects of treatment. Had study enrollment been larger, this trend would be even more significant.

In this study, radical prostatectomy was shown to have little benefit in men with low-risk disease when compared to observation. These data corroborate additional models (such as those developed by CISNET investigators) suggesting potential overtreatment, and further reiterating belief that not all men require active treatment for their prostate cancers. However, the positive findings in the high-risk patients underscore a strong need for reliable, effective biomarkers that allow us to distinguish low-risk disease from high-risk disease so we can prescribe treatment accordingly. Until we are able to distinguish between indolent and aggressive disease, some men with low-risk prostate cancer will desire treatment; this is appropriate in the absence of a certainty that they will die with prostate cancer, not of prostate cancer.

While the study demonstrates that some men with low-grade disease may not benefit from surgical intervention, it is does not add to our understanding of who exactly these men are. This is due, in no small part, to the fact that only 10 percent of the men in PIVOT were under age 60 and only half of the patients (55 percent) had no other co-morbid conditions. Given that the median follow-up in PIVOT was only 10 years and the real possibility that patients with low-grade prostate cancer and longer life-expectancies may garner some benefit from surgical treatment with longer follow-up, younger, healthier patients with low-grade prostate cancer should still strongly consider surgical treatment for their disease.?

UK PM's ex-media chief, friend charged over hacking

LONDON (Reuters) - Prime Minister David Cameron's ex-media chief and Rupert Murdoch's former UK newspaper boss are to be charged with phone-hacking offenses in the most significant development in a scandal that has rocked Britain's establishment.

Prosecutors said on Tuesday that Andy Coulson, Cameron's communications director for four years until 2011, and Rebekah Brooks, who oversaw Murdoch's News International, would face charges of conspiracy to intercept communications.

The alleged offences were committed between 2000 and 2006 when both served as editor of the News of the World, the salacious Sunday tabloid which Murdoch was forced to close a year ago amid public disgust at the phone hacking revelations.

Among the alleged victims were two former home secretaries (interior ministers), former England soccer manager Sven-Goran Eriksson, Hollywood stars Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, former Beatle Paul McCartney and a minor member of the royal family.

Brooks and Coulson are also both accused of involvement in hacking the telephone of Milly Dowler, a missing schoolgirl who was later found murdered in 2002.

It was the revelation that News of the World journalists had hacked her phone that triggered a furor that engulfed Murdoch's News International and ultimately led to the closure of the 168-year-old News of the World.

"I am not guilty of these charges," Brooks said in a statement. "I did not authorize, nor was I aware of, phone hacking under my editorship.

"The charge concerning Milly Dowler is particularly upsetting not only as it is untrue but also because I have spent my journalistic career campaigning for victims of crime. I will vigorously defend these allegations."

Six other senior former News of the World journalists and staff, including the former managing editor, are also to be charged - a formality to be completed by police on Tuesday.

The maximum sentence for the phone-hacking charges is two years in prison and/or a fine.

The development is particularly embarrassing for Cameron because Coulson was also charged with hacking the phones of David Blunkett and Charles Clarke, two former home secretaries from the now-opposition Labour Party.

"That is an astonishing development and I think that is almost inevitably going to rebound on Cameron," Steven Barnett, professor of communications at Westminster University, told Reuters. "That is going to pose some very very awkward questions for the prime minister."

Alison Levitt, Principal Legal Adviser to the Director of Public Prosecutions, said she had concluded there was sufficient evidence to charge the eight suspects with 19 offences over the illegal accessing of voicemails on the mobile phones belonging to politicians, celebrities and sporting figures.

News International had for years denied that phone hacking was widespread after the tabloid's former royal reporter and private detective were jailed in 2007 for the crime.

    LACK OF JUDGMENT

Coulson resigned in the aftermath, and took up the role as director of communications of Cameron's Conservative Party, helping to shape his campaign to become prime minister.

Critics say Cameron appointed Coulson in order to secure the backing of the journalist's former boss, Murdoch, and say the appointment showed a shocking lack of judgment.

The involvement of Coulson and Brooks - a close friend to Cameron - turned the long-running hacking story into a national political scandal that has laid bare the collusion between senior politicians, the police and the media.

Brooks, her husband and her personal staff have already been charged with attempting to pervert the course of justice over the hacking case, while Coulson has been charged in Scotland with perjury after he denied in an unrelated court case any knowledge of phone hacking.

Brooks, wooed by a string of politicians and prime ministers first in her role as editor of the News of the World and Sun tabloid, and then as the head of Murdoch's British newspaper arm News International, was one of the most powerful women in Britain, instantly recognizable by her long, curly red hair.

She was also close to Cameron, socializing with him over Christmas breaks, and both were embarrassed earlier this year when an inquiry into media ethics read out text messages sent between the two.

Cameron used to sign his frequent text messages to Brooks with an affectionate "LOL", which he thought stood for "lots of love".

Paul Farrelly, an opposition Labour lawmaker who questioned Rupert Murdoch and his son James as part of a parliamentary committee investigation into the hacking, said Tuesday's developments were damaging, but not fatal, for Cameron.

"My view is that what happens to Andy Coulson and Rebekah Brooks reflects on David Cameron's judgment in both the appointment of Coulson and in being seen to be so close to a certain newspaper empire," he told Reuters.

"Because it's been going on so long, it's in no way fatal to his premiership. What is more important to the survival of his premiership and the coalition is the economy."

NASA test of hypersonic inflatable heat shield a success

The mushroom-like Inflatable Re-entry Vehicle Experiment 3 performed as expected as it plunged through the Earth's atmosphere and splashed down in the Atlantic Ocean.?

NASA launched a novel new heat shield prototype on a successful test flight Monday (July 23), a mission that sent a high-tech space balloon streaking through Earth's atmosphere at hypersonic speeds of up Mach 10.

The test flight blasted off atop a suborbital rocket at 7:01 a.m. EDT (1101 GMT) from NASA's Wallops Flight Facility on Wallops Island, Va. It sent a small capsule, called the Inflatable Re-entry Vehicle Experiment 3 (IRVE-3) into suborbital space, which deployed the inflatable heat shield and then plunged back down through Earth's atmosphere to splash down in the Atlantic Ocean. ?

The mission, according to NASA, was an unqualified success and will help shape new re-entry systems for future spacecraft.

"It's great to see the initial results indicate we had a successful test of the hypersonic inflatable aerodynamic decelerator," said James Reuther, deputy director of NASA's Space Technology Program, in a statement. "This demonstration flight goes a long way toward showing the value of these technologies to serve as atmospheric entry heat shields for future space." [Photos: NASA's Inflatable Heat Shield Ideas for Spaceships]

The?IRVE-3 heat shield is a cone made up of inflatable rings that are wrapped in layers of high-tech thermal blankets to protect it (and its space capsule) from the searing heat of re-entry through Earth's atmosphere. The 680-pound (308-kg) heat shield prototype was packed inside a 22-inch wide (56-centimeter) nose cone for the test flight. It expanded to a heat shield 10 feet (3 meters) across during the flight.

During the test, which was overseen by ?NASA's Langley Research Center in Hampton, Va.,?the IRVE-3 heat shield launched into space atop a Black Brant 4 rocket and separated from the booster six minutes later about 280 miles (450 kilometers) above the Atlantic Ocean. IRVE-3 then inflated itself with nitrogen gas as expected, creating a mushroom-shaped heat shield known as an aeroshell.

Four cameras aboard the IRVE-3 prototype recorded the capsule's plunge back to Earth, proving that its inflatable heat shield successfully withstood scorching of about 1,000 degrees Fahrenheit (537 degrees Celsius) during re-entry at hypersonic speeds?of up to 6,000 mph (9,656 kph). The IRVE-3 heat shield splashed down in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of North Carolina, where a high-speed U.S. Navy Stiletto boat crew was expected to retrieve it. From launch to splashdown, the entire spaceflight took about 20 minutes.

This isn't the first time NASA has launched an inflatable heat shield into space.

The first IRVE experiment launched in 2007, but failed due to a booster failure. In 2009, the space agency successfully flew the IRVE-2 inflatable heat shield. The IRVE-3 payload, however, is heavier than the IRVE-2 design, and was subjected to more extreme re-entry heating than its predecessor.

"A team of NASA engineers and technicians spent the last three years preparing for the IRVE-3 flight," said Lesa Roe, director of NASA's Langley Research Center. "We are pushing the boundaries with this flight. We look forward to future test launches of even bigger inflatable aeroshells."

    Idora Cooley Tucker: March 23, 1921?July 15, 2012

?I have said many times that my life has divided itself quite naturally into three segments: childhood and growing-up years, married life, and life since my husband died. It is the years of my marriage that stand out the most clearly in my memory.? ?Idora Tucker, Wife and Mother (2009)

Idora Cooley Tucker, a retired educator who spearheaded special education in Vermont public schools in the 1960s and, in her ninetieth year, toured the state as a member of the memoir-writing group known as the Hale Street Gang, died at her home in Randolph on July 15. She was 91.

The eldest of five children of Harry H. Cooley, a lifelong farmer and Vermont?s secretary of state under Governor Philip Hoff, and Gertrude Small Cooley, a farm wife and music teacher, Idora graduated from UVM in 1941. Her first teaching post was a one-room schoolhouse in Randolph Center.

As an itinerant reading specialist in the Randolph schools in the early ?70s, Idora used innovative methods to help children who were not being served by the standard curriculum. ?Working with struggling learners is hard work,? she wrote in an account of her teaching career that she penned in her eighties, ?and sometimes not as successful as one would wish. Add to that the fact that at first I didn?t really know what I was doing or should be doing. Gradually, over a few years, a combination of trial-and-error experience and graduate level training gave me more strategies to use with my pupils and brought with it more confidence in my ability to help them.?

Idora?s work in Randolph was closely followed by Jean S. Garvin, the state?s director of special educational services, and in 1975, when the Education for All Handicapped Children Act was passed into law, Garvin tapped Idora to help schools implement the new regulations at the local level. With the Orange Southwest School District as her proving ground, Idora developed an administrative model that would be used by future special-education coordinators around the state.

?The laws about special education were new and were much resented by almost everyone except parents of the children who needed special education,? Idora wrote. ?I was often bitterly attacked in meetings. At first I felt very threatened. Later, I realized that those who gave me such a hard time were merely venting their frustration at doing something they didn?t want to do, and I was the person telling them that the law required it. After that I stopped taking it personally and just went about doing my job to the best of my ability.?

In 1980, Garvin recruited Idora for a job that would bring her skills to other school districts. ?In 1980, the federal law was only two years into implementation and there was a lot of groundwork to be laid,? remembered Judy Eklund, a former colleague in the Department of Education, in a phone interview last week. ?Idora was at the forefront of making that happen. She was a visionary and an organizer, and she knew how to get the job done.? Over the next six years, Idora traveled some 120,000 miles over Vermont roads to arrange teacher training around the state.

Born on March 23, 1921, at Gifford hospital in Randolph, Idora grew up in a family that prized education. The Cooley farm in Randolph Center was a place where one might mow hay or put up beans all day and then sit down in the evening to play Mozart for a gathering of friends and neighbors. ?Mom and Dad were very courageous to send me off to college that fall of 1937,? she wrote in a memoir that she entitled Childhood and published in 2008. ?We were still not quite out of the Great Depression, war in Europe was imminent, and I was the first of five who would be expected to acquire an education.?

As the wife of Dr. Ransom E. Tucker, a Randolph obstetrician, Idora raised five children and did what she described as ?the kinds of volunteer teaching that mothers did then: Brownie Scouts, church school, junior choir, ski instructor.? She and her husband also served on the board of Randolph?s first special-education class, a local initiative that was funded and supervised by the state at a time when the 1975 federal law mandating a free and appropriate education for all school-age children was a decade in the future.

After retiring from the Department of Education in 1986, Idora mentored young teachers through the Upper Valley Teacher Training Program, then returned to the classroom as a volunteer at the Rumney School in Middlesex, where her three granddaughters were students.

An accomplished pianist and a voracious and wide-ranging reader, Idora inherited her father?s love of books and her mother?s passion for music. The shelves behind the Steinway in her front parlor bulged with sheet music, and get-togethers at the Tucker house often turned into songfests with Idora as accompanist. In her eighties, she shelved books as a volunteer for Kimball Library and participated in three different book groups that met monthly.

In November 2011, at the age of 90, she stood up at the speaker?s podium in the Vermont State House, a small figure with a bright smile and sparkling blue eyes, and read an excerpt from her memoirs to a gathering of Vermont historians. With her were members of the Hale Street Gang, the memoir-writing group she started at the Randolph Senior Center in the fall of 2008.

Like Harry Cooley, a farmer, teacher, and politician, she did not hesitate to state her beliefs. Her memoir Wartime ends with a passionate warning about the ?futile and wasteful endeavor called war,? and members of her church remember the quiet firmness with which she urged the congregation, during a tense meeting, to adopt an ?open and affirming? attitude toward all, regardless of sexual orientation. She was still articulating her ideas about education reform at the end of her life, and in her final days she advised young family members to ?go your own route.?

As the family matriarch, Idora kept in touch with relatives all over the country and was the magnet that drew them together. She continually expanded her circle of friends even into her nineties, taking a special interest in newcomers to the Randolph community. As news of her death spread and messages poured out on Facebook, a friend who met Idora when they became neighbors in 2008 remembered her as ?honest, caring and curious . . . the memoirs she shared with us tell of a life that admitted it all?the good and bad, the joy and sadness, the breath and death.?

Although people sometimes worried that she took on too much, especially after Ransom?s death, Idora herself believed she had nothing to complain about. On the contrary, she considered that she had led an interesting and fulfilling life.

A woman of many accomplishments, Idora considered her most important role to be the raising of her children and grandchildren. She spent her final days with them, as well as two of her siblings and their families. She experienced no pain and although ?very tired,? she was able to enjoy home-cooked meals, bouquets of flowers cut from her garden, and keeping up with the Red Sox. Her last outing was to join family and friends on her front porch as the Fourth of July parade marched down Highland Avenue.

On Wednesday, July 11, she told her doctors and her family that she was ready to go and she hoped that she could manage a graceful exit. Practical, wise, and dignified to the end, she died four days later in her home of 66 years with family members at her bedside.

She is survived by her daughters Ruth Tucker of Bomoseen, Sara Tucker of Randolph, and Martha Tucker of Montpelier; her sons James Tucker and John Tucker, both of Randolph Center; her sister Ruth Demarest-Godfrey of Brookfield; her brothers Charles H. Cooley of Randolph Center and John H. Cooley of Baldwin, Michigan; and six grandchildren: Shawn Ingram, James R. Tucker, Thomas Texier, Hannah Phillips, Courtney Phillips, and Sara Phillips. She was predeceased by her husband, Dr. Ransom Tucker, in 1972; her sister Marion Stouder; and a grandson, Douglas Ingram.

Memorial services will be held at 10 A.M., Saturday, July 28 at Bethany United Church of Christ in Randolph, with Rev. Robin Junker officiating. There are no calling hours. Private burial will be in the Randolph Center Cemetery at a later date.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Day Funeral Home, Randolph. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Kimball Public Library, N. Main St., Randolph, VT 05060 or to REECH, POB 303, Randolph, VT 05060.

5 Things You Should Know When Caring for Your Aging Parent ...

I?ve been stressed out a little more than usual lately with the responsibilities I have in taking care of my sick mom.?? So I decided to re-blog this article I wrote some time ago.? The research I did to write this article was helpful to me and I hope others will benefit from this also.?

Most people look forward to going through the middle ages and becoming a senior citizen. Usually at that time, all the hard work it took to raise their family is now behind them. Most of their children have graduated from college by now, and have landed a job befitting of supporting themselves independently. Or in some cases, some of the ?children? have even gotten married and have started their own families. This is a time that the near senior citizen has looked forward to; especially when they are in good health. Most are about to retire, if they haven?t already. Now would be the time to go on those vacation cruises and spend a little more money without feeling guilty because of obligations to the children. Right? Well, not necessarily. Often when people reach middle age and older, they may be surprised to learn that their responsibilities have increased dramatically.

According to a USA Today Gallup poll of baby boomers, 41% of the ones who have living parents are providing some sort of care to them. And some have moved their parents into their homes with them. Also according to USA Today, approximately 34 million Americans serve as unpaid caregivers to other adults. 89% of those surveyed referred to this as only a minor sacrifice. However, as the parents condition worsens, the sacrifice and demands becomes greater. According to the AARP, the average caregiver is a 46 year old female who is still working outside of her home. In light of these statistics, I thought I would share with you some helpful tips to consider if you need to take care of your frail

?1- Seek helpful advice. Taking care of your aging parent can take a toll on the average person., both physically and emotionally. Before you get too overwhelmed with the physical aspects of the care, you should get advice on the best way to go. Talk to your parent?s physician regarding how to go about getting help. Some physicians have staff in their office that can put you in touch with a local service that may help you get care for your aging parent. Also you can try calling the Elder Care Locator, sponsored by the federal government. It will provide you with additional referrals that are geared to help you. The number to call for the Elder Care Locator is 800-677-1116.

?2- Solicit family help- When there are siblings involved, if at all possible, have a family meeting. Discuss what your parents are in need of and decide on an action plan and divide the responsibilities. This will prevent any one person from being too over burdened. Perhaps there are three siblings; one can be responsible for buying the food and supplies for your parents household. Another can be responsible for making the medical appointments and following them through. And the third sibling can help out with the personal care and house hold chores. The personal care alone can be a big burden by itself.? If money is an issue, hopefully you will receive help from one of the community resource services for elder-care. Soliciting family help may be practical but not always workable. Many siblings are spread across the country as adults, so this plan will not be doable.? In that case you will probably need to have someone to either live in the home with your parents or have someone to go there every day to provide the needed assistance.? Siblings have been known to alternate the time flying in to spend time with their aging parents.

3- In-house facility placement- You may have to make the hard decision of placing your parents in a nursing home or in an assistant living facility. A nursing home facility offers long term care with total personal care 24 hours a day. If this is what you decide to do, hopefully you will be lucky enough to find a suitable home of your choosing close to you. But this may not always be the case. You should do a little checking on the nursing homes available (use a nursing home review service) before deciding on the one you want. Even if you have to drive a little longer for a visit, if the home lives up to your expectations, then it will all be worth it.

An assistant living facility is similar to a nursing home, but is different in the type of service provided. The patient will usually have an individual apartment unit to live in. However, there are room-mates available in most cases. An assistant living facility will provide all the basic needs, but most will require that the aging adult is able to function at a higher level than the nursing patients. Most can still bathe themselves and feed themselves independently. They are ambulatory and can participate in activities sponsored by the facility, including swimming and dancing. However, the individual finds it difficult to live independently.? This includes shopping for food and supplies at home, or running a home in general.

?4- Support groups- To help you through the difficulty of caring for your aging parents, join a support group. Joining a support group is very valuable in many ways. A support group such as ?Children of Aging Parents?, will not only provide you with emotional support, but will even suggest more community resources that you may not be aware of. The support group is designed to help each other by sharing experiences and ideas.

5- Get respite care- If you are the one providing the soul care to your frail and aging parent, you should get respite care. In other words you need to take breaks from time to time. Taking care of your aging parent can be very demanding and emotionally distressing. It is advisable that you take as many breaks as you can. After you have taken care of your elderly parent, forget about the dishes in the dishwasher for a moment. It is time for you to take a break. Go set on the porch or patio and relax for awhile. Listen to some nice music, dive back into that great book you were reading. Your parents may even qualify for respite care service from Elder Care. Call the Elder Care Locator (800-677-1116) and ask about a respite care service in your community. There are some agencies that may be able to provide this service free of charge if you qualify. However, it would be worth it to pay someone for a couple of hours daily to provide you with this service. There may be a trusted neighbor or friend who could do this for you. During that time you should leave the house if possible, and do something for yourself.

?These are the suggestions I think will be most helpful for you if you have the responsibility of caring for your aging parent. I believe if you were to apply these suggestions, the care and responsibility of your parent will be far less stressful.

    Healthy trails to you

    Carolyn

Heating Contractor Manassas Will Make An Energy Efficient Home

There are several heating contractor Manassas professional to help you maintain your home's heating and cooling systems. Don't wait until your system is broken and you are forced to deal with temperatures that are too cold or too hot. There is a menu of services available to consumers to help keep homes safe, warm and efficient.

Controlling humidity in the home goes beyond comfort. A product called the flow-through humidifier can control your home's humidity and keep it at the optimal level. The challenge is to prevent mold and mildew, yet not have an overly dry environment. Mold and mildew are problems commonly found in homes. Continued preventive maintenance is often needed to ensure your family's health.

If a home's duct work is poorly designed, the heating and cooling systems have to work much harder. If ducts are too small, the necessary air flow can be virtually impossible. Professional contractors can evaluate the home's entire duct work system. Perhaps modifications are all that are needed. In some cases, the entire duct work system needs to be replaced.

Residential zoning is a great way to maximize the efficiency of your home's systems. Most houses have hot spots and cold spots. Keeping the cold spots warm may make the hot spots unbearably warm. A carefully designed residential zoning system will keep your entire home comfortable. One person can watch television in a cold room, while another works out in the hot room, and everyone enjoys a moderate temperature.

An old furnace may be the culprit when it comes to high energy bills. Just because a furnace is working, does not mean that it is working efficiently. In the long run, it is cost effective to replace old furnaces that are energy hogs. The money saved in energy bills will more than pay for the cost of the new, energy efficient furnace. Of course, being energy efficient is also good for the environment.

It is ironic that your home should be a safe environment, but can actually be harmful to your health. Toxins in the home may cause or contribute to chronic health issues such as asthma and sinusitis. Some toxins found in the home may even cause lung cancer. Most people have heard of carbon monoxide poisoning, but few realize that they may be at risk. An out of date furnace is often the cause of CO poisoning, so regular furnace maintenance is advisable and the responsible thing to do.

Homes with basements can be a welcome environment to hazardous toxins. Special care should be taken with basements to keep them safe for the family. (AP) ? Devastated mourners grasped at dirt atop fresh graves and screamed in agony Friday as they buried the five Israeli victims of a bombing in Bulgaria ? an attack that Israel has blamed on Iran and its proxy group Hezbollah.

Two days after the deadly blast in a popular vacation spot, investigators in Bulgaria and in several other countries were still struggling to confirm the attacker's identity.

Bulgarian prosecutors said the attacker had short hair, not the long hair seen in the security video footage captured of him at the airport. A witness said he appeared to be wearing a wig.

The victims' coffins were received early Friday in a military ceremony at Israel's international airport. Seventeen Israelis remain in hospitals.

Childhood friends Itzik Kolengi, 28, and Amir Menashe, 27, were buried in the central Israeli town of Petah Tikva.

Kolengi's wife, Gilat, was wounded in the attack and remains hospitalized. The couple has an infant daughter.

"I promise you that the family and I will watch forever over your wife, Gilat, and your amazing daughter, Noya, who looks exactly like you, and we'll raise her just as you would have wanted," Kolengi's brother David said during his eulogy.

Menashe's wife, who was also wounded in the attack, attended the funeral in a wheelchair. They too have an infant son.

Nearby, in Rishon Lezion, hundreds of mourners joined the family of Cochava Shriki, a 42-year-old woman who had recently become pregnant after years of fertility treatments.

In the northern Israeli town of Acre, Maor Harush, 26, and his close friend Elior Price, 24, were laid to rest. A third friend remains hospitalized in serious condition.

Israeli and American officials have blamed the Iran-backed Lebanese militant group Hezbollah for Wednesday's bombing, which killed five vacationing Israelis, along with a Bulgarian bus driver and the attacker, in the Black Sea resort town of Burgas.

In TV interviews Friday, Defense Minister Ehud Barak said he was certain who carried it out.

"Hezbollah is behind the attack, it was part of a series of attacks," he told Israel's Channel 2 TV. "We know that Iran is behind it all. What we don't know is who the actual man is."

Iran denied responsibility for the attack, which threatened to further escalate a shadow war between the two countries over allegations that Tehran is trying to build nuclear weapons. Iran says its atomic program is for peaceful purposes only.

Security camera footage from before the attack showed the suspected bomber wandering in and out of the terminal, wearing a baseball cap over long hair, a T-shirt and plaid shorts, with a bulky backpack.

Interior Minister Tsvetan Tsvetanov told reporters the bomb was in the backpack and detonated in the luggage compartment of the bus. The bomber was believed to have been about 36 years old and had been in the country between four to seven days, he said.

He later said in an interview with state TV that the blast was caused by 3 kilograms (6.6 pounds) of TNT powder.

Bulgarian prosecutors said the man tried to rent a car in the days before the bombing but was turned down because his ID appeared suspicious. Authorities have examined his fingerprints, his DNA and his fake Michigan driver's license.

They also said the man actually had short hair. It was not clear if he was wearing a wig, or if he had a haircut after the airport footage was taken.

Afrodita Petrova, the owner of the car rental company, told Bulgarian National TV that the suspect had short dark hair when visiting the office. She said he was the same person from the video camera footage and appeared to be wearing a wig.

"He spoke English with an Arab accent," she said.

Tsvetanov said the investigation had ruled out that the bomber was a Bulgarian citizen, but did not say how authorities know that. He said the investigation had also ruled out that the bomber was Mehdi Ghezali, a Swedish citizen and former Guantanamo detainee whom authorities had previously fingered as the bomber.

"Now we are focused on finding out the identity of the suicide bomber and his possible whereabouts ahead of the blast," Tsvetanov said.

Police and prosecutors refused to give any more information, saying it would compromise the ongoing investigation.

Israel has attributed a series of attacks on its citizens around the world in recent months to Iran and its proxies.

The Islamic militant group has not commented on the attack.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast called the accusation "baseless."

The U.S. intelligence community has a "high degree of confidence that this was carried out by Hezbollah," presumably by a cell located in Bulgaria, said an official who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss intelligence matters. "This was researched and target was prepped," the official said, hallmarks of the discipline and expertise of the group.

However, Pentagon press secretary George Little said Friday the U.S. government has not established with certainty who was behind the attack.

"The attack does bear some of the hallmarks of Hezbollah, but we are not in a position to make any final determination," Little said. He declined to say what aspect of the attack resembled the methods or other features of Hezbollah.

Israel has officially issued a complaint with the U.N. Security Council, accusing Iran of responsibility for the attack. Israeli representative Haim Waxman wrote the Security Council president that the attack in Bulgaria was part of an international terrorist campaign against Israelis and Jews worldwide, led by Iran and Hezbollah.
