Has Ron Paul been shut out of the campaign by the MSM? Is there a conspiracy to silence the libertarian maverick despite his proven ability to raise millions of dollars and win Web polls? Washington Post ombudsman Patrick B. Pexton says his newspaper may be guilty of depriving Paul of coverage it's lavished on Michele Bachmann and even Newt Gingrich.
Still, The Post's coverage of Paul looks thin compared with its stories on Bachmann. In the past six months, The Post has published online or in print 34 staff-written stories plus 12 wire service stories on Bachmann, who has served not even five years in the House, and that doesn't count the blog posts about her on The Fix or Glenn Kessler's Fact Checkerpieces. The Post published 19 staff-written stories on former House speaker Newt Gingrich in that time, plus one wire story and many blog posts. On Paul, a congressman for more than 20 years, who was No. 2 in fundraising after Romney in the last report, The Post has published just three full stories, a couple more that had large sections on him along with other candidates, two wire stories and The Fix blog posts.
Pexton's conclusion: "The Post could have done much better on Ron Paul." (Of course he wants more "in-depth stories" on "the issues," because those vague prescriptions sound really good in an ombudsman column.)
Pexton, like most newspaper ombudsmen, is a doddering scold with a poor grasp of the complexities of the contemporary media landscape. While he's right that Ron Paul gets scant coverage in traditional reported newspaper articles, he should probably ask himself why he received so much Paul-related email that he decided to devote his column to the subject of whether or not the congressman was receiving enough "coverage" or not. Because Ron Paul is the president of the Internet. The Web is full of Ron Paul coverage, and it has been for years. Researchers have found that 75 percent of the Web traffic that isn't dedicated to torrenting porn is taken up by discussions of Ron Paul. (Researchers have not actually found that, because researchers are IGNORING THE RON PAUL RevolUTION.) The sort of people with whom Ron Paul's message resonates are already awash in coverage of Ron Paul. (And the sort of people who find his philosophy repulsive are similarly inundated.)
That surfeit of Ron Paul coverage has convinced Ron Paul acolytes that their fringe candidate, who stands no chance of winning the presidency, is in fact prevented from cruising to electoral victory solely by the fact that the media won't tell people about his inspiring message. As Maggie Haberman wrote last week, Paul supporters should be glad to receive haphazard MSM coverage. It means that Paul's many self-declared liberal supporters often don't actually realize how paleo-conservative the congressman can sound on abortion and civil rights. It means that fewer people heard his call to return to the glorious old days of pre-FEMA disaster response. The "fan club" quality of support for Ron Paul would be imperiled should his disillusioned former-Democrat supporters learn that there are libertarian candidates out there with "better" records and rhetoric on issues from immigration to reproductive rights. (There are plenty of them, for example, whose ideas about monetary policy are not quite so frozen in the amber of the Gilded Age.)
In short, there is no shortage of Ron Paul coverage. There is in fact precisely as much Ron Paul coverage as there is demand for Ron Paul coverage, thanks to the elegant perfection of the market for "stuff to argue about on the Internet."

Florence And The Machine Return With 'What The Water Gave Me'

Florence and the Machine conquered audiences on both sides of the Atlantic with their dynamic, dramatic debut, 2009's Lungs. Ever since, fans have been clamoring for the follow-up. Now, it's finally on the horizon.
On Tuesday (August 23), Florence Welch announced on her official site that her sophomore album would hit stores on November 7 in the U.K., and according to her rep, it'll be out sometime the same month here in the U.S. She also gave us all a sneak peek of what we can expect on the disc with a soaring, chiming, epically massive new track called "What the Water Gave Me," which is imbued with a gospel choir and Welch's epic pipes, and seems destined to rule the festival circuit for the foreseeable future.
The still-untitled album is produced by Paul Epworth and was recorded at London's iconic Abbey Road studios. Welch had been premiering a handful of tracks from the record during live shows — the standout "Strangeness and Charm" will reportedly also make the cut — and earlier this summer, before her performance at Bonnaroo in Manchester, Tennessee, she sat down with MTV News to discuss the process behind making the new album, calling it a more cohesive effort than her debut.
"I wrote so much of my first album at different times and places — some songs when I was 18, some when I was 21 — so there are so many pieces and styles on it," she said. "And that's one of the things I love about it, but for my new record, I wanted to do things differently. It's why I worked with one producer in one studio. I want to tie all those things together ... in one piece, if possible."
Welch also said that the album draws inspiration from ethereal sources too, including one song on the album she wrote after a ghostly visitation.
"There's a song on it that's inspired by a visit [from] my dead grandmother — like, I had a really, really vivid dream about her and, um, she was giving me advice in this dream," she said. "And it was really emotional, and I woke up crying. And there's one song that's inspired by that experience."

At the same time, because the United States has kept a low profile (compared with other NATO nations, especially Britain, France, and Italy, which have a more vital interest in the fate of Libya), the "Pottery Barn rule"?you break it, you buy it?will not apply.
Sens. John McCain, R-Ariz., and Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., issued a truly obnoxious statement today, congratulating "our British, French, and other allies, as well as our Arab partners, especially Qatar and the UAE, for their leadership in this conflict," adding, almost as an afterthought, "Americans can be proud of the role our country has played in helping to defeat Qaddafi, but we regret that this success was so long in coming due to the failure of the United States to employ the full weight of our airpower."
First, six months, while longer than most people anticipated (and an eternity in the world of 24-hour cable news), is not a terribly long time for an operation to depose a dictator who's managed to stay in power for close to 42 years.
Second, if a pair of prominent Democrats had issued such a statement after, say, President George W. Bush helped to oust the Taliban from Afghanistan, they would have been condemned as bitter partisans or worse.
If Obama had launched a massive bombing campaign, much less put U.S. infantry troops on the ground (as some neoconservatives urged), and if Qaddafi had surrendered or died in the rubble of his palace as a result, the world?perhaps the rebels themselves?would have been incensed by the "imperialist aggression" and would have demanded that the United States restore order, then criticized us sharply if our effort fell short.
Still, even now, the Libyans cannot restore order or rebuild their country by themselves. Thanks in good part to Qaddafi's four decades of rule, they have no democratic traditions or institutions, their economy is in shambles, their military and police are in retreat, and?as much as the rebels have learned over the last few months about maneuvering against an enemy army and coordinating an assault on a city?it's an open question how well they'd be able to police that same city.

If your customer service is not good on a consistent basis, don?t rely on winning them over with the occasional big WOW. This produces uncertainly and unrealistic expectations in your customers.
It?s better to let your customer experience good?consistent?service over time. It is easier for your staff to deliver, and it creates less chance of customers seemingly being favored over others. If you have a big wow, everyone will want it. And they will be mad when they don?t get it.
After all, in many places, the customer service bar is very low. To succeed, all you have to do is offer good service. It does not have to be jaw dropping either. It just needs to be consistent. This will place you more favorably in your customers eyes.
Now don?t get me wrong. There are times when a big WOW is needed. But it cannot be consistently delivered or relied upon as part of your customer service. If you use this strategy, you endanger your business by showing favoritism. You do not want to be seen favoring one group over another.
So focus your daily customer service on consistent small acts. Train your employees to be great at a few consistent things. Equip them to create success. In the end, I am sure you will be pleased with the results.
Please?remember:?Don?t rely of the Big WOW for your customer service. Good consistent customer service makes better customers.

Cliff notes
* Prior to joining Caesars in ?08, worked 5 years for the NFL. Has a background in sports/entertainment on the communications/PR side.
* Came with the intent of Caesars launching a TV channel focused on Las Vegas as well as a sports arena on the strip. Both projects later got shelved.
* Was initially concerned (after Black Friday) that large buy-in WSOP events would suffer. Was otherwise optimistic that the rest of the series would not be impacted.
* There is a large international contingent, which was not impacted (at the time of the WSOP) by Black Friday.
* Can?t take credit for record attendance and prizepools. It?s the players that decide to participate.
* Have never been in bed with any US-facing sites. Have had some relationships with international sites.
* Decided to limit logos to one, and keeping them on shirts. No hats. There were concerns about overt advertising laws in several countries. ESPN?s reaction to Black Friday (temporarily pulling all WSOP replays off the air) was a factor as well.
* Epic poker league has no chance to succeed. No business model is in place.
* WSOP is a business, but is not ?getting rich? from it. Can?t see how Epic will make one penny. They seem to have a heaven-sent investor who isn?t too concerned.
* Poker is not about elitist competitions for the select few. It?s not truly meaningful.
* The goal of Epic is legalized online gaming, and taking advantage of the pros to be their ?full tilt? sponsored pros.
* Getting corporate sponsors for live poker tournaments is not easy. Unlike other sports, there aren?t stadiums with tens of thousands of people spectating.
* The one error of the ?thunderdome? set was embedding LED lights into the rail in front of the crowd, which cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. The boards were not reinforced, and prone to damage.
* After the first few televised events, ESPN went on break for June and had the rail boards reinforced. The drinking ban was lifted after this.
* Russ Hamilton?s banner was not blacked out for most of the Summer. Last year, the fire marshal had issues with the banners, as some of them block sprinklers. There are lots of banners, so spacing is always an issue and things get moved around.
* Felt that Hamilton?s banner should be taken down and that he doesn?t deserve it. There was fierce debate among colleagues, but ultimately was overruled, argument being ?you can?t change history?.
* WSOP doesn?t alter or edit images of players on banners and such. Isn?t part of the job to censor.
* Mellissa Hayden did not have a true credential. She got a day pass. Unclear how she got that, perhaps under the guise of assisting a player. I [Seth] deserve blame for letting this happen.
* There were a couple days that the smell stood out. Don?t think it?s a distinct player smell. More of a plumbing issue. Nowhere else do you have thousands of people flushing toilets in 10-minute span. Air conditioning is a factor as well.

Age and severity of heart failure associated with impairment in verbal memory
ScienceDaily (Aug. 8, 2011) ? Older patients with lower rates of left ventricular ejection fraction (a measure of how well the left ventricle of the heart pumps with each contraction) appear more likely than younger patients to have significantly reduced verbal memory function, according to a report in the August issue of Archives of Neurology, one of the JAMA/Archives journals.
Three decades ago, researchers began investigating the association of heart failure with cognitive decline, according to background information in the article. Thirty to 80 percent of patients with heart failure may experience some cognitive deficits. However, research seeking to clarify the correlation of cognitive impairment with decreased left ventricular ejection fraction (EF), a measurement of the severity of heart failure, has generated inconsistent results. "Conflicting evidence about the association of EF with cognitive function suggests a complex relationship between patient variables and the cardiovascular factors that influence cognition," write the authors.
Joanne R. Festa, Ph.D., from St. Luke's?-Roosevelt Hospital Center, New York, and colleagues conducted a cross-sectional study to investigate the relationship between age, EF and memory among patients with heart failure. The participants, all adult patients with heart failure, underwent neurocognitive assessment while being evaluated for potential heart transplantation candidacy between September 2006 and September 2008. The testing included verbal and visual memory, attention, executive functioning and self-reported depressive symptoms. Researchers also recorded participants' EF, heart failure cause, medical history, current medications and demographic information. Echocardiography was used to measure EF, which was scored at less than 30 percent or at 30 percent or greater. Age quartiles used by the researchers were 45 years or younger, 46 to 55 years, 56 to 62 years and 63 years or older.
A total of 207 participants were included in the final analysis of the study; 38 had an EF of 30 or greater, and 169 had an EF of less than 30. Stable memory function was maintained across EF levels in patients younger than 63 years, but in older patients a significant association with worse memory performance was noticed when EF was less than 30 percent. Analysis of the results demonstrated that the components of memory with which low EF had the greatest association were verbal delayed recall and recognition.
"In summary, an interaction exists between the age and EF such that older patients with low EF had significantly reduced memory, particularly verbal delayed recall and recognition," write the researchers. However, the association of low EF with "memory in these patients is not entirely explained by EF." The authors suggest further research into additional mechanisms of cognitive dysfunction in patients with heart failure.

Why India could feel the global financial aftershocks this time
India's huge domestic demand helped it weather the financial crisis of 2008. But since then, Indian companies have invested internationally, increasing India's vulnerability to economic downturns.
New DelhiWhen US President Barack Obama arrived in Mumbai last November, the country?s benchmark stock index had just hit a peak of 21,108. Today, the Sensex slipped as low as 16,759, making it official: The bears are roaring in India.

India fared better than most countries in the global financial crisis of 2008 partly due to its insular focus on its own domestic market. But India?s strong position fueled more Indian acquisitions abroad and greater foreign investment here. Now India stands more exposed to any second coming of global financial jitters.
?In IT, pharmaceuticals, manufacturing you clearly have industries that have all moved into directions of growing international exposure,? says Nick Paulson-Ellis, India country head for Espirito Santo. ?We are not talking about a Northeast Asian country that is export-oriented, but I think it?s no longer the case that India is not exposed to international conditions abroad,? he adds.
India has a huge domestic population with rising living standards. And the ability to supply that domestic demand still gives India a resiliency unlike more export-driven economies.
But Mr. Paulson-Ellis notes that Indian corporate earnings are increasingly linked to global demand. Acquisitions of Jaguar and British Steel have helped make the Tata Group into Britain?s largest manufacturing employer. Manufacturer Bharat Forge Limited now gets a significant percent of its revenues from Europe, he says.
?One of India?s great attractions through the global crisis was its domestic-led demand. Whilst this hasn?t suddenly changed, there is no doubt Indian companies are less local than they used to be and therefore more exposed to headwinds currently faced by the global economy,? reads an August report from Espirito Santo.
Over the past few years, foreign investors have also come into the Indian market in a big way. Between December 2008 and December 2010, foreign institutional investment in equity and debt securities nearly doubled from $91.6 billion to $171.7 billion, according to the Economic Times.
