Used Car Buying Tips Guide ? Autos

Buying a second hand car can save you money and allows you to really enjoy your vehicle without worrying about the odd small scratch or the repayments. But, when you decide that you wish to take this method when purchasing a car, you do need to make sure that the car you will purchase is of top quality and that you are indeed not entering into an agreement with a rogue trader. There are so many of them about and they prey on people that do not have a substantial knowledge of cars; so if you want to avoid buying a heap of junk, you need to follow the tips.

So, the first tip for purchasing second hand motors is that you need to be sure of how much you want to spend. If you are opting for a used car, you can look in a few different places including the Internet auctions, classified adverts and traditional yards. But, you do need to have a maximum figure that you wish to sped on your new vehicle; over spending will mean that you will still end up short of necessary cash and this is not the idea. Especially if you are going to purchase from a car yard, you need to be firm about the limit on your spending.

Next, once you are clear of how much you have to spend on your auto, you need to make sure that you know how to spot a good buy and how to avoid buying a heap of rubbish. So, if you are not an excellent mechanic, it always pays to take someone with you who know about cars, and this is even more important when you are going to purchase from a private dealer. If you cannot find anyone to go with you, at least prepare a list of intelligent questions about the car so that the seller will think that you are knowledgeable.

Next, you need to think about the options open to you when buying a second hand auto, and these days you do not just buy from private dealers or car lots. For many years now, second hand cars have been bought and sold over the Internet very successfully, too, but in the last years the most exciting way to buy a second hand car had got to be by visiting some online car auctions. Many of these auction sites concentrate on selling cars that have been repossessed by finance companies, and you can pick up some amazing bargains this way. The majority of these cars will be only a couple of years old and in amazing condition.

So, these are just some of the tips you should think about following before you go out and purchase a second hand car. The moral of second hand car ownership is that you can get yourself a great deal, but as much homework as you may do, you should also be prepared for some bad deals. When you buy a second hand car, there are often many problems with the motor that the seller tries to cover up, and there are indeed many rogue traders. A great value second hand vehicle is indeed therefore often one that you will find in an auction as it will be nearly new and in great condition.

Moving Averages Basics And How They Help Forex Traders ...

With Forex trading becoming a more extended and desired occupation for lots of people around the world, living with the desire of working at home and still having the ability to gain a full time income, the need for accurate trading systems and techniques has become a major necessity for all these new forex traders.

Among one of the important concepts a new forex trader should know is what a Moving Average means, how it?s calculated and what its use as a trading indicator is.

Moving Average is defined as a technical indicator that shows the average value of a particular currency pair over a previously determined amount of time. This means, for example, that prices are averaged over 20 or 50 days, or 10 and 50 min depending on the time frame you are using at the moment of your trading activity.

As an averaged quantity, MA?s can bee seen as a smoothed representation of the current market activity and an indicator of the major trend influencing the market behavior.

This smoothing effect of the Moving Average is very helpful when the trader is looking for getting rid of the ?noise? in the price fluctuations of the currency pair he is trading at the moment and a more precise emphasis in the trend direction is required.

The basic mechanics of how Moving Averages can tell you where the forex market is moving (up or down), at the moment of your analysis is by considering two different time frame Moving Averages and plotting them on the forex chart. It is very important that one of these MA is over a shorter time period than the other one; let?s say one will be over a 15 days period and the other over a 50 days period. Most trading station software available by a number of brokers will let you do this plotting and much more.

Once you have plotted the two Moving Averages, you will notice points of crossover where the shorter time period MA will cross above the longer time period MA indicating an upward trend in the market, or if the crossing is below the longer period MA that will be an indication of a down trend in the forex market.

So from this simple concept you can commence to understand the basics of confirming trends when checking your forex charts during your trading hours.

JayBird intros Freedom Sprint: the JF3 Bluetooth stereo fitness headset gets 40% smaller

JayBird intros Freedom Spirit Bluetooth stereo headset the JF3 gets 40% lighter

It's been quite a while since we last heard from JayBird, but now it's back with another set of Bluetooth in-ear headphones for fitness activities. Unveiled and available today, the new Freedom Sprint ($130, pictured right) joins the ranks of the company's Freedom JF3 headset ($99) -- it's essentially the same Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR headset, albeit with 40-percent less of a footprint for the earpieces (33 x 16 x 8 mm vs. 44 x 19 x 9 mm). The petite size naturally means a smaller internal battery (rated for 4.5 hours, compared to the original's six), but JayBird let us know that the Sprint is acoustically identical to the JF3. While size is the main focus, there are also a few other improvements being toted in the Sprint -- it sports a micro-USB port for charging (changed from mini-USB), a softer cable between the buds, an inconspicuous notification LED, enhanced call quality and the multifunction button has been repositioned to the top of one of the earpieces (the JF3's is on the outside). Sounds like the Sprint could be the $130 ticket if Bluetooth, small size and a secure fit are your main concerns for a pair of in-ears. You'll find more images in the gallery below and further details at the source link.

DNP EMBARGO Archos unveils ICSrunning GamePad with physical controls

Archos already has its hands in the kiddie-tablet market, with its 7-inch Arnova Child Pad, and it's taking on the productivity-minded crowd with its keyboard-toting 101 XS. Now the company is going after another niche segment with the just-announced GamePad. The 7-inch slate runs Android 4.0 with a dual-core processor clocked at 1.5GHz and a quad-core Mali 400 MP GPU, and it sports physical gaming controls in addition to the standard touchscreen. Archos includes its own "game recognition and mapping tools," which ensure that the physical buttons are compatible with Android games that use virtual controls (some 1,000 titles are apparently compatible with the GamePad at this point). Of course, this is an internet-enabled device as well, and it will include full access to the Play market and WiFi connectivity when it goes on sale at the end of October. Other specs include 8GB of internal storage, plus a microSD card slot that adds up to 64GB. There's also a mini-HDMI connection for outputting content to your TV. For now, Archos is only announcing pricing as "less than €150", and the device will drop in the US and Europe at the same time. For now, the below-the-break press release will have to satisfy your curiosity.

You've Decided to Rent an Office ? What's Next? | Work At Home ...

You have a business and have decided that you want to rent an office. Seems like this would be a pretty simple procedure but there is a lot more to consider than just strolling through the ads in the paper and taking a look at some building spaces. If you want to find the right kind of office space, you have to put a little more time and effort into the process to ensure you end up renting the right space for your needs.
Many owners of businesses jump into the first office space they find because of the fancy layout or the luxury amenities. Before you go looking for a space to rent, write down everything you need and take it with you. If you have 5 employees, don?t rent a space for 50 employees. If you are planning on expanding at some point, a little extra space can be used, but its best to rent for current office needs.

Anyone can find office space for rent on their own, but it?s such a big decision to make and will be worth the commission you have to pay a real estate broker who has a specialty in renting commercial property who can guide you through the decision making process that will be best for your office circumstances. A real estate broker can help negotiate the terms of a rental agreement and will have much more availability to rental properties that may not be listed anywhere you can find them.

Have a budget in mind before you go into a rental agreement. Don?t get yourself over-extended because you can make upgrades later on when you?re ready. Office space rental can really be something that makes or breaks a budget. Find a good space that is enough for you to work but also within your budget range. Always take the time to stop and read the small print on the contract. You need to be aware of the extra costs such as utilities or any hidden fees that may be a part of the fine print. This is another area where an agent can come in handle and make sure your signing something that is in your best interest.

Another area an agent will come in handy is with negotiating your monthly payment. Don?t just accept what someone offers you the first time. Use some of the market knowledge you have or just let your experienced broker handle making a counteroffer. Often times, an agent can negotiate because they know more about what others in the area are renting for. Utilities and such can be negotiated as well with the landlord. Some landlords will lower your payments for a longer term lease, and some will trade out part of your rent for your services. This is where a good broker can come in handy to help you negotiate.

You want to be sure your office rental agreement is taking your future needs into consideration. Make sure the agreement states if you can remodel the space or expand if you need to. What happens if you need to end the contract for some reason? You want to be sure of the fees involved with all of this before you sign the agreement.

Finding a good office space for rent is your goal. Take the time and effort needed to ensure you do it the right way.

Author?s Bio: Michael Brown is a well renowned author. He has been penning useful articles on space for rent and related topics for over a decade. He often refers to Officespaceforrent.org for better information and suggests his readers to do so.

Police: Woman sets fire to home after fight over parenting | Regional ...

POTTSTOWN, Pa. -

Police said they've arrested a woman for setting fire to her home. They said she did it after an argument with her female partner about parenting.

Sunday night police said they were called out twice to a home on Spruce Street, first around 8:30 for a domestic dispute over child custody and the second time around 9 for a fire.

Firefighters said they were able to battle the fire quickly at 976 Spruce Street because a neighbor had called it in shortly after it started.

"We saw flames in the front window the front picture window," said Kim Ward, "They looked like they were almost to the ceiling and I saw that from our driveway."

Ward said she watched from across the street.

"I was concerned about the children cause I know there's two little kids and they're cute little kids a little girl and a little boy," said Ward, "I heard that were adopted."

Police said before the fire started they were called to the home because Cora Sharp, 48, and her female partner share custody of two adopted children and they had an argument over differing views on parenting.

Police said they stayed until the other woman left and Sharp was home alone.

They had to come back for the fire.

"I asked where the kids were and they said they weren't there. They were with the one parent," said Ward.

Police said they found Cora Sharp, alone, driving away from the house.

"She admitted to the police officer with a spontaneous utterance that she set the fire that occurred at 976 Spruce Street," said Detective Tom Leahan.

Police said Cora Sharp said, 'I did it' and that she used a lighter.

"When she was arrested that evening she did have a blood alcohol concentration level of .20," said Leahan.

Neighbors learned Monday that police and fire investigators are calling this a case of arson.

"Emotions took over and did something stupid. I don't know," said Ward. "It's just scary."

A neighbor who didn't want to go on camera said the two homeowners were good parents.

Sharp was charged with three counts of arson and related charges, causing a catastrophe and criminal mischief.

Overweight women face increased breast cancer recurrence risk ...

Extra pounds?even within the overweight but not obese range?are linked to a higher risk of recurrence of the most common type of breast cancer despite optimal cancer treatment, according to a new study published early online in CANCER, a peer-reviewed journal of the American Cancer Society. The study?s results suggest that extra body fat causes hormonal changes and inflammation that may drive some cases of breast cancer to spread and recur despite treatment.

Women who are obese when they are diagnosed with breast cancer have an increased risk of dying prematurely compared with women of normal weight. In this new study, Joseph Sparano, MD, of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine?s Montefiore Medical Center, in Bronx, NY, and his colleagues across the US cancer cooperative groups compared the health outcomes of obese and overweight patients with others in a large group of women with stage I-III breast cancer who had participated in three National Cancer Institute?sponsored treatment trials led by the Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (now part of the ECOG-ACRIN Cancer Research Group). All of the trials (E1199, E5188, and E3189) required participants to have normal heart, kidney, liver, and bone marrow function, thereby excluding patients with other significant health issues. As a result, researchers were able to disentangle the influence of obesity from other factors affecting cancer recurrence and survival.

The researchers found that increasing body mass index?a measure of the body?s fat content?significantly increased women?s risk of cancer recurrence and death, despite optimal treatment including chemotherapy and hormonal therapy. There was a stepwise relationship between increasing body mass index and poor outcomes only in women with hormone receptor?positive breast cancer, the most common type of breast cancer that accounts for approximately two-thirds of all breast cancer cases in the United States and worldwide.

?We found that obesity at diagnosis of breast cancer is associated with about a 30 percent higher risk of recurrence and a nearly 50 percent higher risk of death despite optimal treatment,? said Dr. Sparano. ?Treatment strategies aimed at interfering with hormonal changes and inflammation caused by obesity may help reduce the risk of recurrence,? he added.

Why Twitter's new token limits caused Tapbots to remove the Tweetbot for Mac alpha download link

Tapbots pulls Tweetbot for Mac Alpha

Recently the Tweetbot for Mac public alpha download was pulled from the Tapbots website, leading to questions and concerns about its status and its future, given Twitter new, 3rd party client-hostile API changes. To address all of this, and further explain what Twitter API 1.1 means for Tweetbot for Mac, developer Paul Haddad took to the Tapbots blog:

Twitter?s latest API Changes means now we have a large but finite limit on the number of user tokens we can get for Tweetbot for Mac. We?ve been working with Twitter over the last few days to try to work around this limit for the duration of the beta but have been unable to come up with a solution that was acceptable to them. Because of this we?ve decided its best for us to pull the alpha.

Haddad enumerates many of the new limitations and realties facing Twitter developers when it comes to tokens, all centered around the August 16, 2012 cutoff points, when developers became restricted to 100,000, or if they already exceeded that, 2x the number they had, and that's all they'll get.

I asked Haddad if Twitter integration in iOS 5 and iOS 6 for iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad, and Twitter integration for OS X Mountain Lion for Mac, would take any of the pressure off the token cap by letting Apple handle some of the authentications. Haddad thought it unlikely:

As part of every Twitter request generated by the iOS Twitter integration the app?s unique id is sent. I?m sure Twitter could easily use this to prevent anyone from going over the current caps.

The best thing to do, if you're already using the Tweetbot for Mac Alpha, is to buy the release version when it hits the Mac App Store. That way, the token you already have becomes paid for, and Tapbots can at least earn as much as possible for their efforts, before the hard limit kills their ability to add more users.

If you don't intend to buy Tweetbot for Mac when it's released, or don't intend to use any other Twitter client you've bought in the past, Hadded does have one other way for you to help developers out:

If you go on the Twitter website and navigate to Settings -> Apps and hit the ?Revoke access? button you are returning one of those tokens back to the app?s pool.

Tapbots' only concern right now should be developing a fantastic Twitter experience for Mac. Instead, given how unstable, undependable, and unreliable the Twitter platform has become, they're having to stress over and worry about the future of Tweetbot itself. That's bad for developers, for users, and for Twitter. Sadly, the first group is powerless to effect change, the second group is largely unaware change needs effecting, and the third group, despite its awareness and power, lacks the insight and acumen, to listen to their better angels and make it so.

Kuwaiti firm: Carlyle Group acted without license

KUWAIT CITY (AP) ? A Kuwaiti company suing the Carlyle Group over a $25 million investment that went bad is now accusing the private equity firm of marketing the deal without a license as it seeks to have its case heard in Kuwaiti courts.

The latest claim by Kuwait's National Industries Group adds a new twist to its more than two-and-a-half year legal challenge to Carlyle, and could complicate the American company's relationships with other wealthy Mideast investors.

NIG's lawsuit focuses on a Carlyle investment fund that was one of the earliest casualties of the financial crisis when it collapsed in 2008. The fund has been the subject of multiple lawsuits against Washington-based Carlyle.

In a motion filed this month with a Delaware court hearing the case, NIG argues that the dispute should be heard in Kuwait because Carlyle lacked the legal basis to pitch the deal there in the first place.

Selling foreign securities or shares in investment funds in Kuwait requires a license from local authorities, according to a declaration by lawyer Ahmed Zakaria Abdel-Magied filed by NIG attorneys. He added that marketing such investments without a license makes the underlying deal invalid.

NIG said Sunday it believes it is entitled to the return of its $25 million investment under Kuwaiti law.

"Carlyle was more than happy to conduct its sales presentations in Kuwait and close its deals in Kuwait," NIG's general manager, Ahmed Hassan, said in a statement. "But now that the moment has come to deal with the ugly aftermath ... Carlyle would prefer to try its luck in Delaware."

Carlyle has tried hard to woo clients in the oil-rich Gulf Arab states. It opened an office in the Mideast financial hub of Dubai in 2006, and its shareholders include Mubadala Development Co., an investment company owned by the United Arab Emirates capital, Abu Dhabi.

The Carlyle fund involved in the Kuwait case, known as Carlyle Capital Corp. Ltd., went bust in March 2008. It used high levels of debt to invest in securities backed by bundles of home mortgages that had been given a seemingly safe AAA rating by credit rating agencies.

Carlyle declined to comment on the case Sunday. It has previously said it will fight NIG's suit.

"We believe these claims are without merit and intend to vigorously contest all such allegations and are currently unable to anticipate what impact they may have on us," Carlyle said in its most recent quarterly report, filed on Aug. 14.

Private equity firms such as Carlyle raise money from big investors and then use that money to invest in companies or other investments. The industry is under close scrutiny because of the U.S. presidential election and presumed Republican nominee Mitt Romney's former role as an executive at another private equity firm, Bain Capital.

Kuwait's NIG started out in the 1960s as a building materials company and later began investing across a range of industries.

It is partly backed by the Kharafi clan, one of Kuwait's most prominent merchant families. A branch of the Kuwaiti government, the Public Institution for Social Security, is a minority investor.

Like many Gulf companies, it has struggled to meet its debt obligations in the wake of the financial crisis. Faced with a looming $475 million loan repayment due earlier this month, it approached its lenders about reworking the terms on the debt so it could repay over a longer period.

Just days before the Aug. 16 repayment deadline came due, NIG announced it was calling off the effort to adjust the repayment terms because it had managed to line up new financing.

Why Mars Is Not the Limit For Human Space Flight

"Mars is not just the next or most accessible human destination, it is the ultimate one," writes Louis Friedman, executive director emeritus of The Planetary Society. He says the concept of manned spaceflight is progressing so slowly, and robotic developments so swiftly, that Mars will be the first and last planet humans set foot on. "By the time human spaceflight technology is theoretically capable of journeys beyond Mars, humans in modern space systems will be virtual explorers interacting with the environments of distant worlds, but without the baggage of physical transportation or presence." Mark Whittington disagrees, saying Friedman is demonstrating Clarke's First Law, and that the history of human exploration is rife with periods of stagnation interrupted by technological achievement that led to swift progress.

Angels give extra, top Red Sox

BOSTON (AP) - The Los Angeles Angels' wild comeback win over the Boston Red Sox could provide the boost they need to close the gap in the AL wild-card race.

Kendrys Morales led off the Angels' two-run 10th inning with a solo homer, and Los Angeles completed a three-game sweep by outlasting the Red Sox 14-13 on Thursday night.

Los Angeles overcame deficits of 6-0, 9-8 and 11-9 and ended the night 2 1-2 games behind the second-wild card spot in the AL.

"This team still has some fight in it," outfielder Vernon Wells said. "We know we have a unique opportunity to do something special and, hopefully, we can continue to take advantage of it."

Wells hit a solo homer to cut Boston's lead to 11-10 in the ninth and then doubled in the run that proved to be the difference after Morales' 16th homer of the season snapped a 12-12 tie in the 10th.

But Wells admitted that his high shot that appeared to bounce off the top of the left field wall shouldn't have been a homer.

"I saw the way it bounced off so I assumed it was a home run," he said, "but once I got in (the clubhouse) they told me otherwise, but we'll take it. It was a great game to be a part of. We've come out on the wrong end of a lot of those games in the last couple of weeks."

Boston manager Bobby Valentine appeared surprised when told at his postgame news conference that the home run call was wrong.

"I didn't know that," he said, then sighed and lowered his head.

Why didn't he ask the umpires to review the call?

"None of the outfielders told me any different," he said.

The Red Sox wasted a 6-0 lead, then rallied from deficits of 8-7 in the sixth and 12-11 in the ninth. But closer Alfredo Aceves struggled after Boston was one out away from victory in the ninth. Aceves (2-8) gave up five runs and six hits in one inning, and the Red Sox lost for the 11th time in 15 games.

Ernesto Frieri (2-0) got the win after giving up a tying solo homer in the ninth to Cody Ross, his 19th of the season, and an RBI single in the 10th to Dustin Pedroia, who drove in five runs.

Frieri was charged with a blown save, but secured the win when he struck out Adrian Gonzalez to end the 4-hour, 34-minute game.

"Wild game," Pedroia said. "We need to try and find a way to win these. You felt like whoever was hitting last was going to win. We are playing hard, but we need to find a way to be one run better."

With the score tied at 12, Morales jumped on an 0-1 pitch from Aceves for his 16th homer - just over the low right field fence. Erick Aybar followed with a single, knocking out Aceves. Wells hit an RBI double off Craig Breslow for the final run.

The Angels swept the Red Sox after being swept at home in four games by Tampa Bay before coming to Boston.

The Red Sox took an 11-9 lead in the eighth on RBI singles by Jacoby Ellsbury and Pedroia, but the Angels rallied in the ninth and regained the lead with Wells' eighth homer and two-out, run-scoring singles by Torii Hunter and Mark Trumbo.

Angels starter C.J. Wilson, 0-5 in his last 11 starts, struggled again.

The Red Sox took a 1-0 lead in the first on a double by Pedroia and an RBI single by Gonzalez. They made it 6-0 in the second on run-scoring singles by Scott Podsednik and Ellsbury, and Pedroia's 11th homer, a three-run shot.

But Franklin Morales couldn't hold the lead, giving up six of the Angels' eight third-inning runs. Los Angeles had six hits, three walks and an error in the inning. Chris Iannetta and Hunter had two hits each, and every member of the Angels lineup except Trumbo got on base.

Two runs scored on bases-loaded walks to Kendrys Morales and Wells. Seven consecutive batters reached base after two were out.

"We get down early (by) six runs and guys came in and said, `let's just start chipping away."' Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. "I guess we didn't really chip away. We put up an eight spot to get back into it.

"We definitely feel good about the ability of our offense to come back even though there were some rough spots on the pitching side."

Wilson retired eight straight batters before Pedroia reached on an error by third baseman Alberto Callaspo in the fifth and scored on a single by Ross.

Boston went ahead 9-8 with two runs in the sixth on Mike Aviles' 12th homer and consecutive doubles by Pedro Ciriaco and Ellsbury. But Los Angeles tied it in the seventh on Trout's RBI single.

Notes: The last Angels pitcher to go 11 starts without a win was Jim Abbott, whose streak reached 13 games from May 7 to Aug, 10, 1996. ... Angels first baseman Albert Pujols missed the game with tightness in his right calf. ... Red Sox left fielder Carl Crawford underwent Tommy John surgery on Thursday to reconstruct the ulnar collateral ligament in his left elbow. He is expected to be sidelined six to nine months. ... Jon Lester (7-10) pitches for the Red Sox on Friday against Bruce Chen (9-10) in the opener of a four-game series with the Kansas City Royals. ... The Angels return home for a three-game series against the Detroit Tigers with Zack Greinke (1-2) going for Los Angeles against Rick Porcello (9-8).

QOTW #33 ? Communications infrastructure after a nuclear - Blogs

A few weeks ago, I was sat pondering nuclear bombs. To any of you who frequent the DMZ, this shouldn?t be much of a surprise, as it?s pretty much par-for-the-course for my imagination on a Wednesday night. I started thinking about the electromagnetic pulse released from a nuclear explosion, and how it might affect electronic devices. ?But surely,? I thought, ?a nuclear bomb would negate any interesting post-blast resilience implications by turning all local electronic devices into glowing dust!?. How wrong I was.

After a bit of research, I came across High-Altitude Nuclear Explosions (HANE). No, this isn?t the title of the latest Michael Bay movie, but rather the concept of detonating a nuclear bomb at an altitude greater than 30km. Whilst this might sound rather ridiculous, certain countries have actually done it. In the early 60s, the USA and Russia performed a series of HANE tests, in order to better understand the potential for anti-satellite weaponry. These tests showed that the electromagnetic pulse and ensuing radioactive fallout was capable of destroying or damaging satellites in space rather indiscriminately. The tests caused numerous satellites to fail after a short period of time, due to severe radiation damage. What?s really interesting about HANE, though, is that the explosion releases a giant electromagnetic pulse, without the hassle of re-enacting that dream scene from Terminator 2 where Sarah Connor?s skeleton is left clinging onto a chain-link fence.

To quote the Wikipedia article:

This high-altitude EMP occurs between 30 and 50 kilometers (18 and 31 miles) above the Earth?s surface. The potential as an anti-satellite weapon became apparent in August 1958 during Hardtack Teak (a HANE test). The EMP observed at the Apia Observatory at Samoa was four times more powerful than any created by solar storms, while in July 1962 the Starfish Prime test damaged electronics in Honolulu and New Zealand (approximately 1,300 kilometers away), fused 300 street lights on Oahu (Hawaii), set off about 100 burglar alarms, and caused the failure of a microwave repeating station on Kauai, which cut off the sturdy telephone system from the other Hawaiian islands.

That?s one hell of an electromagnetic pulse!

After I?d got over the initial excitement of learning that it is actually theoretically possible to sizzle microchips from space using nukes, I decided to post a question on Security SE. In short, I wanted to know how worldwide communications infrastructure, especially the Internet, was protected from such attacks. This is where our resident nuclear weapons ?enthusiast? Thomas Pornin came in, with a wonderfully detailed answer.

It turns out that the Internet is, like a condom machine in the Vatican, amazingly redundant. Obviously not quite the same kind of redundant, but redundant nonetheless. If a network link goes down, packets are routed through other links. It?s a self-healing network. This means that you would have to knock out multiple inter-continental network links in order to cause severe disruption. Furthermore, it has plenty of redundant channels that are likely to still function after a large EMP:

An interesting issue with radio and satellite communication is temporary disturbance of the ionosphere. The electromagnetic pulse would cause electrons to be jiggled about in the upper atmosphere, creating areas of increased and decreased electron density. A lot of long-range radio communication relies on ?bouncing? radio waves off of the ionosphere, which means that such communications are likely to suffer strong interference. Longer wavelength signals are likely to be disrupted more than short wavelength (GHz) signals, due to some interesting physics wizardry I won?t go into.

Of course, in the case of a real war, we?d have to worry about anti-satellite weapons knocking out communications too. Thankfully though, under-sea cables are shielded by a big blanket of water, which absorbs electromagnetic radiation. This is why submarines send up a radio mast or buoy. The good news is that our fastest and most reliable network links will actually end up being our most resilient, because they?re on the sea bed. Furthermore, optical fiber cable is not affected by electromagnetic induction, like copper wiring is. So, if all hell does break loose, the phat-pipes should still be able to serve you your daily dose of StackExchange! Yay!

But not everything relies on hardware interlinks. We also have to take into account the systems that facilitate the core functionality of the internet. An interesting example of this is DNS. There are thirteen root nameservers that facilitate the absolute top tier of DNS functionality. Without the root name servers, we wouldn?t be able to reliably translate domain names into IP addresses. Think of them as a set of mirrors for a global directory, where top-level domains (TLDs) are indexed. These entries point to other DNS servers, which point to other DNS servers, etc. We?re left with a large hierarchical map of DNS resolution. Now, whilst thirteen servers sounds rather flimsy, the actual number of servers involved is much larger. A neat technique called anycast allows multiple physical servers across the world to represent a single root name server. This is not the same as cloud computing, which is often touted as a panacea for uptime-critical solutions. Guess what? The cloud is not redundant! But I digress. In order to take down the entire DNS system, you?d need to nuke Japan, England, France, Germany, most of eastern Europe and the entire east and west coasts of America into oblivion. At that point, I don?t think the remaining radiation-resistant insects would be particularly interested in whether the DNS system is functioning or not.

The biggest threat HANE poses to our infrastructure is to our power grid. The world is coated with a mesh of power wiring, stretching over hundreds of miles of land. Since the cables are so long, and are very likely to cut through the magnetic lines of flux in a perpendicular manner, the induced currents could be massive. Local substations would burn out, street lighting would fry, circuit breakers would pop, and fuses would blow. Without power, our worries about communications infrastructure being disrupted would be rather pointless. The servers that host anything worth accessing would be down anyway, and it?d be likely that you couldn?t boot your PC or charge your laptop, due to lack of power. Even when sections of the power grid come back online, the demand would be massive, causing further outages and brown-outs.

So, how can we protect ourselves? Here?s a few ideas:

  • Wrap everything important in a giant Faraday cage. Not exactly practical for power plants or datacenters, though.
  • Ensure that significant chunks of the world?s communications infrastructure is built around trans-oceanic cables and optical links.
  • Ensure that nation-critical services are distributed globally, with the ability to self-heal if remote systems become unreachable.
  • Be prepared to switch to lo-tech communications in the event of such a disaster.

Perhaps the thing to take away from this analysis is that nukes are dangerous, and there?s not much you can do to prevent their aftermath. The best policy is to not detonate nukes at high altitude, or if possible, not to detonate nukes at all.

Nukes are bad, m?kay.
