NCAA Basketball Matchup: Mississippi State Bulldogs vs. Baylor Bears
9:00 PM EST
College Basketball Gambling Odds from Bookmaker
NCAA Basketball Betting Favorite: Baylor -8
Over/Under: 142.5

The Bulldogs lost at home to Akron in their second game of the year, but they have run off 11 straight wins since then. Baylor has pulled out a couple close hard fought wins at BYU and West Virginia in the past couple weeks. The Bears come into this game unbeaten.

Mississippi State has eight players who play a lot of minutes. The Bulldogs have four guys averaging double figures in points this season. Renardo Sidney is starting to step up like the coaches had hoped he would for a while now. Sidney averages 10.2 points and 4.8 rebounds per game. Mississippi State vs. Baylor NCAA Basketball Preview & Free Pick

Dee Bost is an ultra-talented point guard who creates open looks for his teammates. Arnett Moultrie has been the real star of the team so far this year. Moultrie is a transfer from UTEP, and he is averaging 17.8 points and 11.7 rebounds per game. The Bulldogs average 77.2 points per contest.

Baylor probably has the single most talented frontcourt in all of college basketball. Perry Jones III is a player the NBA scouts drool about. Jones is averaging 14 points and 7 boards per game. Quincy Miller is only a freshman, but he is making a major impact for this Bears squad. Miller is a versatile forward who can shoot it well and get on the glass as well. Quincy Acy is a fourth year senior who gets the job done consistently. Acy doesn?t get the recognition that some of the other stars on this team get, but he is a winner. Baylor?s athleticism and length make it tough for opponents to get quality shots. Opponents are shooting just 36.5% against this Bears team.

Both of these teams can score in bunches. Expect Bost to put up some points against Baylor?s guards, but Baylor should win the battle in the frontcourt. I think this one goes over.

Prediction: Baylor 76 Mississippi State 69

MMA Marketplace: Overeem and Lesnar?s similar UFC 141 shirts

Profile shirts of stylized animals are the hottest rage for heavyweights this season. Don't believe me? Check out Alistair Overeem and Brock Lesnar's walkout shirts for UFC 141.

MMA Marketplace: Overeem and Lesnar?s similar UFC 141 shirts

It will be tough to distinguish between cornermen at their fights this weekend. Based on shirts alone, I'm picking Overeem. His shirt is cleaner and comes in black and white. Plus, if Lesnar wants to channel a wolf via his shirt, he should really go with this one.

Buy Lesnar's shirt for $49.99 (!) and Overeem's for $34.99.

A Summer Wedding North of Napa

This amazing wedding had many elements that the bride did herself, such as the pinwheels which were used as escort cards. Even the self-portrait photo booth that the guests had their picture taken inside of "frames" was made by the bride. They had many "school" elements as the bride is an elementary school teacher, such as the guest book made out of old library cards.?

College loans: Graduate then consolidate?

"Hey graduate, now that you've earned your degree, what are you going to do next?" Unlike Super Bowl winners, you're not going to Disney World if you've left college with a load of student loans. To manage the debt, you might be thinking that consolidation can streamline and maybe even lower your monthly payments.

A plus of consolidation is that students will only have to make one monthly payment; a minus could mean that the borrower makes more payments and pays more in total interest, according to Chris Collins, the associate director of the San Diego State University, or SDSU, Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships. In this interview, Collins discusses the benefits -- and the pitfalls -- recent graduates might gain by taking out consolidation loans.

What advice would you give to recent graduates who are burdened with paying off student loans?

(It is hoped) the former student is starting from a good place by having managed his or her borrowing appropriately and only taking those loans needed for educationally related expenses. There is not an overriding interest rate benefit to be gained by a consolidation loan since servicers and the government use a weighted average on the loans being consolidated. It is more a matter of convenience, as the borrower will only have one monthly payment to make. Students who experience a financial hardship, such as not being able to find a job or being underemployed, can seek other remedies to postpone their loan payments, including deferment and forbearance. There are also alternate loan repayment plans including extended, graduated and income-based repayment that can reduce the amount of the monthly payment owed by the borrower.

When considering college loan consolidation, is it better to consider federal loans or private loans?

Generally speaking, private loans cannot be consolidated with federal student loans, and not all private lenders offer consolidation. When a lender is willing to consolidate private loans, the primary benefit is that the borrower gets a single monthly payment. Students should check with individual lenders about their consolidation policies and always pay special attention to the fine print in any agreement they are considering.

What are the pros and cons of college loan consolidation?

The pros would include that there is no cost to consolidate and the student will only have to make one monthly payment. The student can also benefit from the fact that the single monthly payment can be lower overall than the combined payments of unconsolidated loans. However, if the length of the repayment period is increased, it would mean that the borrower makes more payments and pays more in total interest. In addition, a borrower could lose benefits offered as a condition of the original loans.

According to an article published by Consumer Reports last May, the average debt per graduate, class of 2011, is $22,900. If you are among the masses bogged down by college loans, it might help to know that you are not alone, but it will help more to know the pros and cons of debt consolidation so you can begin to make your way to financial freedom.

We would like to thank the associate director of the SDSU Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships, Chris Collins, for sharing his insights.

Our Favorite Celebrity Couples Of 2011

From Britney and Jason to K-Stew and R-Pattz, we look back at the best high-profile pair-ups of the year.
By Jocelyn Vena

Jason Trawick and Britney Spears
Photo: Denise Truscello/ WireImage

From young love to established romantic empires, 2011 was all about PDA. Some of La La Land's most A-list couples weren't shy about flaunting the love they share. From musicians to actors to everyone in between, the last 12 months were all about sharing the love. As the year winds down, MTV News is reflecting on some of our favorite couples of the year.

Britney Spears and Jason Trawick
The couple walked red carpets, gave each other shout-outs at awards shows and even got naked together in Britney's "Criminal" video, but it wasn't until December that they decided to make it official. After two years of dating, Spears and Trawick took their relationship to the next level, with confirmation that Jason put a ring on it. The pair celebrated their love and their impending nuptials in Las Vegas. Their engagement sparked headlines and left Spears "glowing."

Who is your top couple of 2011? Vote in our Newsroom poll!

Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez
Summing up Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez's year into a little blurb isn't that easy. They went to events together, and Bieber lavishly rented the Staples Center just to watch "Titanic." And when they weren't chilling out, they were giving shine to each other's hard work. Or bringing each other gifts. Remember when Bieber showed Selena his pet snake, Johnson, at the VMAs? Yes, we knew you wouldn't forget.

Kristin Stewart and Robert Pattinson
The two "Twilight" stars seem poised to make our favorite couples lists for years to come. While in years past, they've remained under the radar, this year they came out of their shell and opened up about one another in interviews. Who could forget the time that K-Stew referred to her not-so-mysterious "English" boyfriend in an interview? We're assuming not R-Pattz.

Beyoncé and Jay-Z
OK, so Beyoncé and Jay-Z have been together for, like, an eternity, but it wasn't until this year that the pair really had everyone buzzing. When Beyoncé stepped out at the VMAs, her expanding midsection and flashy performance was the ultimate pregnancy announcement. Jay-Z didn't seem to mind all the attention. He celebrated the baby news in the audience with his pal Kanye West.

Wiz Khalifa and Amber Rose
Amber Rose rebounded from her relationship with Kanye West by falling in love with Wiz Khalifa. The couple took the world on their wild relationship ride, from doing interviews together to sparking rumors that they had tied the knot. These two kept everyone talking and they don't seem to mind the attention, or spending lots of time with one another.

'Shameless' Moment: Frank Gallagher's Inappropriate Confession (VIDEO)

The first season of Showtime's "Shameless" was full of memorable Frank Gallagher moments, despite (or because of) the fact that few of them showed the inebriated father of six in an especially good light.

Still, no matter how selfish, drunk or scheming Frank was at any moment,William H. Macy's performance always made the sozzled Chicagoan worth watching.

In this exclusive clip from the Season 1 DVD set of "Shameless," which goes on sale Dec. 27, we get yet another example of Frank's boundary issues. Most of us wouldn't go into graphic detail about our sins and faults while sitting in a church pew, but Frank doesn't have a problem with that.

"Shameless," which also stars Emmy Rossum and Joan Cusack, returns to Showtime Jan. 8. Keep up with Huffington Post TV for news and interviews about the comedically-inflected drama, and for an assessment of how the American adaptation of the British show of the same name has progressed in its second season.

Facebook users are not influenced by their Friends? ?Likes?, says Harvard study

by Swati on December 25th, 2011

Facebook is getting sued for its ?Like? button feature, that shows site users the brands and products that their friends like. According to the US District court, these advertisements violate California law on commercial endorsements, which prohibits the non-consensual use of a person?s name, voice, signature, and photograph for advertising purposes.

However, if the recent research conducted by researchers at the Harvard university is to be believed, then Facebook?s advertising ?mission that aims to influence users to like or endorse brands that their friends ?like? is going to fizzle out soon. According to this study, Facebook users befriend people with common interests, but do not adopt the tastes and likes of their friends.

To conduct this research, Harvard scientists tracked the Facebook activity of hundreds of college students over four years. Information about the social networking activities of these students, including who they were ?friends? with, and what they ?liked? online was collected annually. This data was then combined with academic and housing data on each of the students.

According to the researchers, students who shared particular tastes in music and movies were likely to befriend one another, instead of these tastes passing from one friend to another.

?In the past three years we?ve been pounded over the head with the idea that everything spreads and everything is contagious, and your peers can influence you in so many ways. Students who share some tastes in music and in movies are indeed more likely to become friends, but it?s very rarely the case that students adopt the preferences of their friends,? explains researcher Kevin Lewis of Harvard University.

This Harvard study debunks the commonly held belief among advertisers and marketers that Facebook users can influence others and encourage their friends to ? Like? the things that they ?Like?. However, considering the complexity of analyzing social networking data and the online behavior of Facebook users, one cannot say how accurate and reliable these study results would be.

So, what do you think about this study? Share your ideas in the comments.

Economic inequality an issue for US 2012 campaign

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Fighting to win over unhappy American voters, President Barack Obama and his Republican challengers are seizing on one of the most potent issues this election season: the struggling middle class and the widening gap between rich and poor.

Highlighted by the Occupy movement and fanned by record profits on Wall Street at a time of stubborn unemployment, economic inequality is now taking center stage in the 2012 presidential campaign, emphasized by Obama and offering opportunities and risks for him and his GOP opponents as both sides battle for the allegiance of the angst-ridden electorate.

For Obama, who calls boosting middle-class opportunity "the defining issue of our time," the question is whether he can bring voters along ? while parrying GOP accusations of class warfare ? even though he's failed to solve the country's economic woes during his first term in office.

For Republicans, Obama's potential vulnerability gives them an opening, but they also must battle perceptions that their policies favor the wealthy at a time when voters support Obama's call to raise taxes on the very rich. Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney has already made clear he'll resist Obama's attempts to capitalize on the issue, adopting the language of Occupy Wall Street in an interview with the Washington Post this month where he called the president "a member of the 1 percent."

For both sides, the question is how to find political advantage in light of a weak economy with unemployment above 8 percent. Since Obama is expected to run for re-election with higher unemployment than any recent president even if the economy continues to show signs of improvement, he must aim to set the terms of the debate in a way that helps him and hurts the GOP ? while Republicans will be working just as hard to deny him any advantage.

The president won a year-end victory Friday with the passage of a two-month extension of a payroll tax cut that had bipartisan support in the Senate.

The measure will keep in place a 2 percentage point cut in the Social Security payroll tax ? worth about $20 a week for a typical worker making $50,000 (?38,293) a year ? and prevent almost 2 million unemployed people from losing jobless benefits averaging $300 a week.

House Republicans had unsuccessfully attempted to push for further negotiations toward a yearlong extension, which allowed Obama to argue for the two-month extension of the tax cuts and prevention of a pending tax increase. The two sides resume discussions on the payroll tax cut early next year.

Obama's campaign pressed its economic argument Friday in an op-ed by Vice President Joe Biden in The Des Moines Register where Biden, taking direct aim at Romney, wrote that the former Massachusetts governor "would actually double down on the policies that caused the greatest economic calamity since the Great Depression and accelerated a decades-long assault on the middle class."

Romney, campaigning in New Hampshire, quickly countered that it's Obama who is hurting the country and expressed astonishment that Biden would have the "chutzpah ... the delusion" to write such a piece. "This president and his policies have made it harder on the American people and on the middle class," Romney said.

It was a preview of an argument certain to carry through the 2012 race, as the Obama campaign, viewing Romney as the likely GOP nominee even before any votes have been cast, works vigorously to define him early on, and Romney does everything he can to resist.

And the dispute taps into a striking reality. After-tax income grew by 275 percent between 1979 and 2007 for the top 1 percent of the population, the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office found in a report this fall. But for the 20 percent of the population making the least money, income growth over the same period was only 18 percent.

Obama "is viewed as more likely to help the middle class than is the GOP, so he can capitalize on this by playing on concerns about inequality and contrasting his positions and the GOP's on issues like tax cuts for the wealthy," John Sides, political science professor at George Washington University, said by email. "However," Sides added, "it's an open question whether that strategy would enable him to overcome a weak economy and win."

Aides say Obama has long been concerned with economic inequality given his background in community organizing. But he brought the issue into much sharper focus in a speech in Osawatomie, Kan., earlier this month, where he reprised a populist message delivered in the same town by Theodore Roosevelt decades ago, and decried a growing inequality between chief executives and their workers.

"This kind of inequality ? a level that we haven't seen since the Great Depression ? hurts us all," Obama said at the time.

"This kind of gaping inequality gives lie to the promise that's at the very heart of America: that this is a place where you can make it if you try."

The issue has become a rallying cry of the Occupy Wall Street movement that's swept the country, with activists proclaiming "We are the 99 percent" ? as opposed to the "1 percent" at the top. And Obama advisers have identified this sense of inequality as the strongest current running through politics, one that they will be focusing on through Election Day.

But some polling suggests a note of caution for Obama in pressing the inequality argument. Gallup found this month that a majority of Americans don't view the country as divided into haves and have-nots. The polling also found that more people thought it was important for the government to focus on growing and expanding the economy, (82 percent) and increasing equality of opportunity (70 percent) than on reducing the income and wealth gap between the rich and poor (46 percent).

"The middle class certainly believes that it's in trouble and rightly so, because it is," said Bill Galston, a former Clinton administration domestic policy adviser now at the Brookings Institution. "But they are yet to be convinced that going after the rich will go to the heart of the problems that now afflict them."

That may suggest an opening for some GOP attacks against Obama. Romney charged in a speech in New Hampshire this month that Obama is pursuing an "entitlement society," versus the "opportunity society" that the former Massachusetts governor said he wants to offer the country. Newt Gingrich, Romney and other Republicans also regularly accuse Obama of "class warfare."

Obama senior adviser David Axelrod called such criticism the "Republican cartoon" of Obama's argument.

"In some ways the race will be different depending on who the nominee is but in some ways the same because they largely subscribe to the same economic theory" of cutting taxes for the wealthy and paring back regulations, said Axelrod. He added that Obama's speech in Osawatomie, Kansas, "was a very, very good statement of his values and vision and will help frame much of what comes in the next year."

10,000 US troops leave Afghanistan

President Barack Obama's order to withdraw 10,000 US troops from Afghanistan this year has been accomplished, a little more than a week before the end-of-year deadline, military officials said.

The drawdown is the first step in the plan to wind down the war, transfer security to Afghan forces and end the combat role for international troops by the end of 2014.

It also gives the Obama administration a second war-related accomplishment to tout this month - coming just a week after US officials marked the end of the war in Iraq as the last convoy of American soldiers rumbled out of that country into Kuwait.

Officials say there are now 91,000 US troops in Afghanistan - down from the peak of 101,000 in June.

In December 2009, Mr Obama announced he was sending an additional 33,000 US troops to Afghanistan in a bid to beat back the escalating Taliban insurgency and change the course of the war.

Six months ago, declaring that the "tide of war is receding", Mr Obama said he would withdraw 10,000 troops by the end of this year, and another 23,000 by the end of next summer.

The decision was met with initial opposition from military leaders, who thought the withdrawal was too much, too soon, particularly since it would pull troops out before the end of next year's fighting season, which can last well into October and even November.

Last week, however, during a trip to Afghanistan, Defence Secretary Leon Panetta repeatedly told troops that the US had reached a turning point in the war.

At one point, he said: "I really think that for all the sacrifices that you're doing, the reality is that it is paying off and that we're moving in the right direction. We're winning this very tough conflict here in Afghanistan."

Contrasting with that assessment is the continuing violence in Afghanistan's east, along the Pakistan border, and the high-profile attacks and assassinations that continue to wreak havoc in and around Kabul. The violence is compounded by worries about government corruption, the fragile economy, and fears that Afghan forces will not be ready to take over security of the country as American and Nato troops leave.

(AP) ? A fuel pipeline exploded in Colombia on Friday, killing 11 people, injuring nearly 90 others, and destroying more than two dozen homes.

The blast before dawn unleashed a ball of fire that ripped through the town of Dosquebradas. Authorities said they were investigating what caused the explosion and suspected it was set off by thieves who may have tapped the pipeline to steal fuel.

Eight people died near the explosion and three others died later at hospitals, said town official Oscar Andres Herrera. He said 88 people were injured, at least five of them severely burned.

President Juan Manuel Santos visited the site of the explosion and promised government assistance to the victims and their families. He said the cause remained unclear but that authorities suspected thieves were to blame.

The explosion sparked a fire that was extinguished Friday morning. The blast and flames destroyed 25 homes and damaged 47 others, Herrera said by phone.

The pipeline, which carries gasoline and diesel, is operated by national oil company Ecopetrol.

The explosion occurred in the central province of Risaralda, located about 100 miles (170 kilometers) southwest of the capital of Bogota.

Officials suspect that thieves had been trying to remove fuel through one of the valves in the pipeline, Mines and Energy Minister Mauricio Cardenas said. Cardenas later told reporters at the blast site that officials were investigating to pinpoint the cause.

Images on Colombian television showed some of the houses destroyed by the blast and other homes with charred walls. The waters of a nearby stream were flaming with some of the spilled fuel.

Police officer Juan Pablo Munoz, who works elsewhere in the country but was visiting family for Christmas, said he was jolted out of bed by the explosion.

"I smelled a strong odor of gasoline," the 21-year-old said by phone. "I went out into the street. I walked at least 10 steps and I saw that everything around me was destroyed."

NEW YORK (AP) ? Even before the Army sent him to Afghanistan, supporters say, Pvt. Daniel Chen was fighting a personal war.

Fellow soldiers at a base in Georgia teased him about his Chinese name, crying out "Chen!" in an exaggerated Asian accent. They called him "Jackie Chen," a reference to the Hollywood action star Jackie Chan. People would ask him repeatedly if he was Chinese, even though he was a native New Yorker.

At one point Chen wrote in his diary that he was running out of jokes to respond with.

Then he was sent overseas, and the hazing began: Soldiers dragged him across a floor, pelted him with stones and forced him to hold liquid in his mouth while hanging upside down, according to diary entries and other accounts cited by a community activist.

On Oct. 3, the 19-year-old Chen was found dead in a guardhouse in Afghanistan with what the Army said was apparently a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

On Wednesday, the Army announced charges against eight soldiers in his death, saying Chen was a victim of illegal hazing. Five of those accused were charged with involuntary manslaughter and negligent homicide. The alleged offenses also included maltreatment, assault and threats.

The military would not discuss the exact circumstances surrounding Chen's death. But family members and community activists said they suspect the bullying may have driven him to suicide.

"Whether suicide or homicide, those responsible for mistreating Danny are responsible for his death," said Elizabeth OuYang, a community activist who is representing his parents, Chinese immigrants who live near New York City's Chinatown neighborhood.

Attorneys for the defendants could not immediately be located. The sister of one of them had no comment. Other relatives could not be reached.

Eugene Fidell, an expert on military law and former president of the National Institute of Military Justice, said bullying has been a recurring problem for the military.

"If there was brutality within the unit, that's a betrayal of the bond of brotherhood," he said. "That is, in theory, the underpinning of what holds a military command together."

He added: "Can I imagine somebody being bullied in the military to the point of taking his or her own life? Yes. These people are young people. You're at an age of vulnerability as well as strength."

In 2010, three Army sergeants were punished after Pvt. Keiffer Wilhelm of Willard, Ohio, killed himself 10 days after arriving in Iraq with a platoon based in Fort Bliss, Texas. Wilhelm's family said he was being bullied and forced to run for miles with rocks in his pockets.

Two sergeants were imprisoned for six months and three months, respectively, on charges of cruelty and maltreatment. The third was convicted of obstructing justice and given a one-grade reduction in pay.

Activists said Chen's case has highlighted the military's poor treatment of Asian-Americans, who remain a tiny percentage of new recruits even as the percentage of blacks, Hispanics, women and other groups has grown.

Pentagon officials would not comment Wednesday on the specifics of the case. But Pentagon spokesman Navy Capt. John Kirby said hazing is not tolerated.

"That's what this uniform requires. And when we don't, there's a justice system in place to deal with it," Kirby said. "That's what we're seeing here in the case of Private Chen."

The details of Chen's alleged hazing came from Facebook and email messages, discussions with cousins and a few pages of Chen's journal released by the Army, OuYang said at a Chinatown news conference.

Chen's relatives said they were encouraged by the charges.

"We realize that Danny will never return, but it gives us some hope," Yen Tao Chen, his father, said through a translator.

Chen was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 21st Infantry Regiment, 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division, based in Fort Wainwright, Alaska.

The Army identified the soldiers charged as 1st Lt. Daniel J. Schwartz, 25, of Maryland (no hometown was given); Staff Sgt. Blaine G. Dugas, 35, of Port Arthur, Texas; Staff Sgt. Andrew J. Van Bockel, 26, of Aberdeen, S.D.; Sgt. Adam M. Holcomb, 29, of Youngstown, Ohio; Sgt. Jeffrey T. Hurst, 26, of Brooklyn, Iowa; Spc. Thomas P. Curtis, 25, of Hendersonville, Tenn; Spc. Ryan J. Offutt, 32, of Greenville, Pa.; and Sgt. Travis F. Carden, 24, of Fowler, Ind.

VanBockel, Holcomb, Hurst, Curtis and Offutt were charged with the most serious offenses, including involuntary manslaughter, negligent homicide, and assault and battery.

Offutt's mother, Carol Tate of Sharon, Pa., told The (Sharon) Herald that she has known about the charges for a while and has talked to her son.

"I think there's a lot of things that really haven't been brought up," she said, but declined further comment.

Schwartz, the only officer among the accused, was charged with dereliction of duty.

The two most serious charges, involuntary manslaughter and negligent homicide, carry prison sentences of up to 10 years and three years, respectively, under military law.

The soldiers are still in Afghanistan but have been relieved of their duties and confined to a different base, the military said. The next step is a hearing to determine if there is enough evidence for a court martial. The proceedings are expected to be held in Afghanistan.

Forest health versus global warming: Fuel reduction likely to increase carbon emissions

ScienceDaily (Dec. 20, 2011) ? Forest thinning to help prevent or reduce severe wildfire will release more carbon to the atmosphere than any amount saved by successful fire prevention, a new study concludes.

There may be valid reasons to thin forests -- such as restoration of forest structure or health, wildlife enhancement or public safety -- but increased carbon sequestration is not one of them, scientists say.

In research just published in Frontiers in Ecology and the Environment, Oregon State University scientists conclude that even in fire-prone forests, it's necessary to treat about 10 locations to influence fire behavior in one. There are high carbon losses associated with fuel treatment and only modest savings in reducing the severity of fire, they found.

"Some researchers have suggested that various levels of tree removal are consistent with efforts to sequester carbon in forest biomass, and reduce atmospheric carbon dioxide levels," said John Campbell, an OSU research associate in the Department of Forest Ecosystems and Society. "That may make common sense, but it's based on unrealistic assumptions and not supported by the science."

A century of fire suppression in many forests across the West has created a wide range of problems, including over-crowded forests, increased problems with insect and pathogen attack, greater risk of catastrophic fire and declining forest health.

Forest thinning and fuel reduction may help address some of those issues, and some believe that it would also help prevent more carbon release to the atmosphere if it successfully reduced wildfire.

"There is no doubt you can change fire behavior by managing fuels and there may be other reasons to do it," said Mark Harmon, holder of the Richardson Chair in Forest Science at OSU. "But the carbon does not just disappear, even if it's used for wood products or other purposes. We have to be honest about the carbon cost and consider it along with the other reasons for this type of forest management."

Even if wood removed by thinning is used for biofuels it will not eliminate the concern. Previous studies at OSU have indicated that, in most of western Oregon, use of wood for biofuels will result in a net loss of carbon sequestration for at least 100 years, and probably much longer.

In the new analysis, researchers analyzed the effect of fuel treatments on wildfire and carbon stocks in several scenarios, including a single forest patch or disturbance, an entire forest landscape and multiple disturbances.

One key finding was that even a low-severity fire released 70 percent as much carbon as did a high-severity fire that killed most trees. The majority of carbon emissions result from combustion of surface fuels, which occur in any type of fire.

The researchers also said that the basic principles in these evaluations would apply to a wide range of forest types and conditions, and are not specific to just a few locations.

"People want to believe that every situation is different, but in fact the basic relationships are consistent," Campbell said. "We may want to do fuel reduction across much of the West, these are real concerns. But if so we'll have to accept that it will likely increase carbon emissions."

(AP) ? Tony Romo was nearly flawless in getting the Dallas Cowboys back on track in the NFC East.

Romo threw for three touchdowns and ran for a fourth score Saturday night, helping the first-place Cowboys beat the struggling Tampa Bay Buccaneers 31-15.

Dallas stopped a two-game losing streak in which it blew fourth-quarter leads to allow a seemingly solid grip on the division lead slip away.

The victory gave the Cowboys (8-6) a half-game lead over New York. Although the Giants hold a tiebreaker advantage after beating Dallas 37-34 last week, the Cowboys can claim the division title and host a playoff game by finishing with wins the next two weeks over Philadelphia at home and the Giants on the road.

The Bucs (4-10) lost for the eighth straight time and played a miserable first half that certainly didn't do anything to help coach Raheem Morris make a case for keeping his job.

Romo threw a pair of 8-yard TD passes to Miles Austin and Dez Bryant in the first quarter, then finished a seven-play, 89-yard drive with a 9-yarder to Laurent Robinson to make it 21-0 with just under 5 minutes remaining in the second quarter. Romo made it 28-0 on a quarterback sneak in the closing seconds of the opening half.

Tampa Bay managed just one first down and was outgained 279 yards to 55 in the first two quarters, but found a way to make it interesting in the second half.

The Bucs, who had had yielded 69 consecutive points dating to the second quarter of the previous week's 41-14 loss to Jacksonville, finally got on the scoreboard in the third quarter when rookie Adrian Clayborn sacked Romo from behind, forcing a fumble that linebacker Dekoda Watson returned 4 yards for a TD for a much-needed spark.

Josh Freeman's 13-yard TD pass to Dezmon Briscoe and a two-point conversion throw to Kellen Winslow trimmed the Dallas lead to 31-15 heading into the final quarter.

The Cowboys have led in the fourth quarter in five of their six losses, however there wouldn't be a late collapse this time. Tampa Bay turned the ball over on downs twice in the last six minutes, and Sammy Morris picked up a first down inside the Bucs 10 to give the Cowboys an opportunity to run out the clock.

Austin's TD midway through the first quarter was set up by Tampa Bay's NFL-leading 32nd turnover, a fumble by Freeman on the fifth play of the game.

The Tampa Bay quarterback scrambled 25 yards on third-and-5 to march the Bucs near midfield, but the opening possession of the night came to an abrupt halt on the next play when Freeman took off again for a 7-yard gain and was stripped of the ball at the Cowboys 44.

Linebacker Bradie James recovered and it took Romo seven plays to get Dallas in the end zone for the first time. The Cowboys marched 69 yards in 10 plays on their next possession, with Romo finishing the drive by finding a wide-open Bryant in the back of the end zone to make it 14-0.

In three career games against Tampa Bay ? all lopsided victories ? Romo has thrown for 908 yards, 11 touchdowns and no interceptions. He was 23 of 30 for 249 yards and was sacked twice Saturday night.

Felix Jones, back in the starting lineup after DeMarco Murray broke his right ankle last week in a 37-34 loss to the Giants, broke a 38-yard run on the drive leading to Robinson's TD and finished with 108 yards on 22 carries ? his second straight 100-yard performance had 67 yards rushing on 12 carries at halftime.

Freeman, making his second start since missing a game because of an injured throwing shoulder, was 17 of 27 for 148 yards and no interceptions. He led the Bucs in rushing with 37 yards on four attempts and was sacked three times, once by DeMarcus Ware, who notched his 16th of the season.

Thanks to a large contingent of Cowboys fans, the Bucs played before a sellout crowd at home for just the second time in two seasons. Judging by all the blue and white jerseys scattered throughout the 65,000-seat stadium, at least half the house appeared to be rooting for Dallas.

The Bucs have lost eight straight following a 4-2 start that included wins over NFC South rivals New Orleans and Atlanta. The skid has coach Raheem Morris on the hot seat just a year after the NFL's youngest head coach led his team to a surprising 10-6 finish that heightened expectations coming into this season.

Tampa Bay played Saturday night without starting receiver Arrelious Benn, who suffered a concussion during last week's loss at Jacksonville. He was replaced by Briscoe, who began the night with just 23 receptions yet shared the team lead in touchdown catches with three.

Russian fishing ship lists badly near Antarctica (AP)

WELLINGTON, New Zealand ? A Russian fishing vessel with 32 crew members was taking on water near Antarctica on Friday, and the nearest ship able to cut through the region's heavy sea ice was four or five days away.

The Sparta was listing at 13 degrees next to the Antarctic ice shelf in the Ross Sea, according to Maritime New Zealand. The agency said the crew was throwing cargo overboard to lighten the ship and some had boarded lifeboats as a precaution.

The ship has a 1-foot (30 centimeter) hole in the hull about 5 feet (1.5 meters) below the water line, the agency said. The crew so far had managed to pump out much of the incoming water and had attached a tarpaulin over the outside of the hole to slow the water flooding in, the agency said.

The crew have asked for more pumps to be sent to them and will try and make repairs to the hull, the agency said, adding it was trying to figure out a way to deliver the pumps.

"It's a very remote, unforgiving environment," said Andrew Wright, executive secretary of the Australian-based Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources, which has licensed the Sparta to catch toothfish in the Southern Ocean.

Wright said he didn't know what caused the hole, although he added an iceberg "would be a good candidate."

The Sparta, which is 157 feet (48 meters) long, sent a distress call early Friday. Maritime New Zealand said heavy ice in the Southern Ocean would make it difficult for other ships to reach the vessel.

The Sparta's sister ship Chiyo Maru No. 3 was 290 nautical miles away and heading toward the stricken vessel but had no capacity to cut through sea ice, the agency said. A New Zealand vessel, the San Aspiring, had some ice-cutting ability and was also en route, but was four or five days away. A third vessel was just 19 nautical miles away, but it was hemmed in by heavy ice and unable to move toward the Sparta.

Ramon Davis, who is coordinating rescue efforts for Maritime New Zealand, said a C-130 Hercules plane that arrived from Antarctica flew over the scene to assess ice conditions in the area to speed up the rescue efforts. But Davis said the aircraft would not be able to pick up the crew.

Davis said there were no helicopters in the area and that another vessel remained the most viable option for trying to rescue the crew.

"It is possible the crew will have a fairly long wait for rescue," he said.

He said that if the crew manage to lighten the ship enough by getting rid of cargo and pumping out water, it's possible the hole in the hull would rise above the water line.

The crew has some emergency immersion suits that could keep them alive for a time in freezing water, Maritime New Zealand said.

The weather in the area was calm, with temperatures a relatively mild 37 degrees Fahrenheit (3 degrees Celsius).

Commission records list the captain of the Sparta, which was built in 1988, as Oleg Pavlovich Starolat, who is Russian.

The high cost of child care

CLASP

By Allison Linn

If you?re a working parent, chances are at some point you?ve bemoaned the high cost of child care.

The lower your income, the more likely you are to have reason to complain.

A recent graphic from CLASP, an advocacy group for low-income people, shows that families with working moms who live below the poverty line and have kids under 15 are spending 40 percent of their monthly income on child care expenses.

That?s a more than 10 percentage point increase from 2002, according to CLASP.

Both sets of data are based on information from the U.S. Census Bureau, and they exclude people who are getting child care for free or from a family member, government or charity program. The most recent data was released in the spring of 2010.

Hannah Matthews, the director of child care and early education for CLASP, said it?s not clear why child care costs have increased so substantially for very low-income families. One hypothesis is that child care costs are going up while incomes are dropping or staying steady.

The 40 percent figure is also very high in comparison to families who earn 200 percent above the poverty line, or more. Those families are paying just 7 percent of their monthly income in child care expenses.

Matthews noted that many families in the 7 percent range also likely feel pained by that child care bill.

?It?s 7 percent of their income and feels like such a large amount. It?s striking to think about what it feels like for a family that?s in the 40 percent chart there - what they?re dealing with just to make ends meet,? she said.

Let's do the twist: Spiral proteins are efficient gene delivery agents

Friday, December 16, 2011

Clinical gene therapy may be one step closer, thanks to a new twist on an old class of molecules.

A group of University of Illinois researchers, led by professors Jianjun Cheng and Fei Wang, have demonstrated that short spiral-shaped proteins can efficiently deliver DNA segments to cells. The team published its work in the journal Angewandte Chemie.

"The main idea is these are new materials that could potentially be used for clinical gene therapy," said Cheng, a professor of materials science and engineering, of chemistry and of bioengineering.

Researchers have been exploring two main pathways for gene delivery: modified viruses and nonviral agents such as synthetic polymers or lipids. The challenge has been to address both toxicity and efficiency. Polypeptides, or short protein chains, are attractive materials because they are biocompatible, fine-tunable and small.

"There are very good in vitrotransfection agents available, but we cannot use them in vivo because of their toxicity or because some of the complexes are too large," Cheng said. "Using our polypeptides, we can control the size down to the 200 nanometer range, which makes it a very interesting delivery system for in vivo applications."

A polypeptide called poly-L-lysine (PLL) was an early contender in gene delivery studies. PLL has positively charged side chains ? molecular structures that stem from each amino acid link in the polypeptide chain ? so it is soluble in the watery cellular environment.

However, PLL gradually fell into disuse because of its limited ability to deliver genes to the inside of cells, a process called transfection, and its high toxicity. Cheng postulated that PLL's low efficiency could be a function of its globular shape, as polypeptides with charged side chains tend to adopt a random coil structure, instead of a more orderly spiral helix.

"We never studied the connections of conformation with transfection efficiency, because we were never able to synthetically make materials containing both cationic charge and a high percentage of helical structures," Cheng said. "This paper demonstrated for the first time that helicity has a huge impact on transfection efficiencies."

Earlier this year, Cheng's group developed a method of making helical polypeptides with positively charged side chains. To test whether a helical polypeptide could be an efficient gene delivery agent, the group assembled a library of 31 helical polypeptides that are stable over a broad pH range and can bond to DNA for delivery. Most of them outperformed PLL and a few outstripped a leading commercial agent called polyethyleneimine (PEI), notorious for its toxicity although it is highly efficient. The helical molecules even worked on some of the hardest cells to transfect: stem cells and fibroblast cells.

"People kind of gave up on polypeptide-based materials for gene deliveries because PLL had low efficiency and high toxicity," Cheng said. "The polypeptide that we designed, synthesized and used in this study has very high efficiency and also well-controlled toxicities. With a modified helical polypeptide, we demonstrated that we can outperform many commercial agents."

The polypeptides Cheng and his co-workers developed can adopt helical shapes because the side chains are longer, so that the positive charges do not interfere with the protein's winding. The positive charges readily bind to negatively charged DNA, forming complexes that are internalized into cellular compartments called endosomes. The helical structures rupture the endosomal membranes, letting the DNA escape into the cell.

To confirm that the spiral polypeptide shape is the key to transfection, the researchers then synthesized two batches of the most efficient polypeptide: one batch with a helical shape, one with the usual random coil. The helical polypeptide far exceeded the random-coil polypeptide in both efficiency and stability.

"This demonstrates that the helicity is very important, because the polymer has exactly the same chemical makeup; the only difference is the structure," said Cheng, who also is associated with the Institute for Genomic Biology and the Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology, both at the U. of I.

Next, the researchers plan to further explore their helical polypeptides' properties, especially their cell-penetrating abilities. They hope to control sequence and structure with precision for specific applications, including gene delivery, drug delivery, cell-membrane penetration and antimicrobial action.
