Trout not among nine new Gold Glove winners

J.J. Hardy thought he'd hit a home run, only to be robbed when Mike Trout made one of the most sensational grabs of the season.

On Tuesday night, Hardy caught a break.

The Baltimore shortstop won a Gold Glove, putting him among a group of nine players honored for the first time for their fielding excellence.

"It means a lot to me," said Hardy, in his eighth big league season. "It's definitely an award I always hoped to get and never really expected to get. I'm surprised and honored at the same time."

Pittsburgh center fielder Andrew McCutchen, San Diego third baseman Chase Headley and Oakland right fielder Josh Reddick also were first-time selections.

"I'm just happy I can pull it out for them and get the A's name even more out there," Reddick said. "It's a huge honor, I'm always taking pride in both sides of my game and trying to be a complete player. You never know what one play, whether the first or the ninth inning, is going to win a ballgame. That's what my mother and father taught me."

Headley, who had a breakout year with the bat, said he and Padres coach Glenn Hoffman, a former major league shortstop, talked during spring training about improving his defense.

"The foundation was laid there," Headley said. "Obviously it's nice when you get the results when you focus on something. ... Your pitcher counts on you to make routine plays each and every time. I was able to do a better job this year."

The Orioles were the only team with three winners. Baltimore center fielder Adam Jones and catcher Matt Wieters were second-time choices, joining Hardy for the awards chosen by major league managers and coaches and presented by Rawlings.

Trout, the Angels rookie center fielder who spent the year climbing walls to take away potential homers, was not picked. Among his best catches came against Hardy at Camden Yards in June.

The San Francisco Giants, fresh off winning a World Series in which they excelled with their gloves, did not have a Gold Glover.

These were the first major awards presented during the offseason, and the MVPs, Cy Youngs and others will come in mid-November. Gold Gloves always seem to raise a ruckus, with many claiming the prizes - actual gloves colored gold - don't define the most deserving fielders.

Hardy led the AL in fielding percentage, making only six errors in 158 games. Others relying on more advanced metrics and insist Seattle's Brendan Ryan was the best shortstop - then again, even though awards are strictly for fielding, players who don't produce at the plate often get bypassed, and Ryan hit a weak .194. Hardy hit 22 home runs.

"I've always hoped but I never expected it," Hardy said. "It's definitely an award I've seen a lot of shortstops get that are really flashy and kind of catch the eye of a lot of people. I don't look at myself that way. I kind of look at myself as just trying to be consistent and steady. I never felt like people noticed."

Wieters, meanwhile, was chosen despite leading AL catchers with 10 errors. He was recognized for the many things he does well - he threw out 39 percent of would-be basestealers and rarely let pitches get past him.

Strong-armed St. Louis catcher Yadier Molina won for the fifth straight year and Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira added his fifth award. Texas third baseman Adrian Beltre, Philadelphia shortstop Jimmy Rollins and Miami pitcher Mark Buehrle became four-time winners.

"I think I'm just regular, above average, just like the other guys. I just love playing the position every night," Beltre said. "I take my position as a challenge and want to make every play I can. I don't see myself as that good."

Buehrle won three times with the Chicago White Sox before joining the Marlins last winter.

"With a whole new group of managers voting for you, it wasn't like it was handed to you," Buehrle said. "The Gold Glove gets to be, `He won it last year, give it to him again.' This one means a lot, because switching leagues, it was different managers voting on it. I had to do my job to earn it."

The other first-time winners in the National League were Washington first baseman Adam LaRoche, Chicago Cubs second baseman Darwin Barney and Atlanta right fielder Jason Heyward.

"I'm extremely thrilled," Barney said. "It's something you came into the season working toward, but it's not something that I thought the results would be there as quickly as they were. I'm extremely happy about it. There's a lot of good competition out there, obviously, and I'm really surprised that ended up happening for me. So it's an exciting night for me."

In the AL, pitchers Jake Peavy of the White Sox and Jeremy Hellickson shared the honor as first-time winners. This was only the third time since the Gold Gloves were first presented in 1957 that there was a tie - there were four NL outfielders in 2007 and four AL outfielders in 1985.

Also winning this year: Yankees second baseman Robinson Cano, Kansas City left fielder Alex Gordon and Colorado left fielder Carlos Gonzalez.

Several players were rewarded for their wins.

Beltre received a $100,000 bonus and Hardy got $75,000, Gordon, LaRoche, Molina, Peavy and Rollins each added $50,000; Gonzalez, Jones and McCutchen $25,000 apiece.

In addition, Gordon's salaries for 2014 and 2015 increase by $250,000 a year to $10.25 million and $12.75 million. His 2016 player option also rises by $250,000 to $12.75 million.

Dawn sees 'young' surface on giant asteroid Vesta

ScienceDaily (Oct. 31, 2012) ? Like a Hollywood starlet constantly retouching her makeup, the giant asteroid Vesta is constantly stirring its outermost layer to present a young face. Data from NASA's Dawn mission show that a form of weathering that occurs on the moon and other airless bodies we've visited in the inner solar system does not alter Vesta's outermost layer in the same way. Carbon-rich asteroids have also been splattering dark material on Vesta's surface over a long span of the body's history.

The results are described in two papers released today in the journal Nature.

"Dawn's data allow us to decipher how Vesta records fundamental processes that have also affected Earth and other solar system bodies," said Carol Raymond, Dawn deputy principal investigator at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif. "No object in our solar system is an island. Throughout solar system history, materials have exchanged and interacted."

Over time, soils on Earth's moon and asteroids such as Itokawa have undergone extensive weathering in the space environment. Scientists see this in the accumulation of tiny metallic particles containing iron, which dulls the fluffy outer layer. Dawn's visible and infrared mapping spectrometer (VIR) and framing camera detected no accumulation of such tiny particles on Vesta, and this particular protoplanet, or almost-planet, remains bright and pristine.

Nevertheless, the bright rays of the youngest features on Vesta are seen to degrade rapidly and disappear into background soil. Scientists know frequent, small impacts continually mix the fluffy outer layer of broken debris. Vesta also has unusually steep topography relative to other large bodies in the inner solar system, which leads to landslides that further mix surface material.

"Getting up close and familiar with Vesta has reset our thinking about the character of the uppermost soils of airless bodies," said Carle Pieters, one of the lead authors and a Dawn team member based at Brown University, Providence, R.I. "Vesta 'dirt' is very clean, well mixed and highly mobile."

Early pictures of Vesta showed a variety of dramatic light and dark splotches on Vesta's surface. These light and dark materials were unexpected and now show the brightness range of Vesta is among the largest observed on rocky bodies in our solar system.

Dawn scientists suspected early on that bright material is native to Vesta. One of their first hypotheses for the dark material suggested it might come from the shock of high-speed impacts melting and darkening the underlying rocks or from recent volcanic activity. An analysis of data from VIR and the framing camera has revealed, however, that the distribution of dark material is widespread and occurs both in small spots and in diffuse deposits, without correlation to any particular underlying geology. The likely source of the dark material is now shown to be the carbon-rich material in meteoroids, which are also believed to have deposited hydrated minerals from other asteroids on Vesta.

To get the amount of darkening we now see on Vesta, scientists on the Dawn team estimate about 300 dark asteroids with diameters between 0.6 to 6 miles (1 and 10 kilometers) likely hit Vesta during the last 3.5 billion years. This would have been enough to wrap Vesta in a blanket of mixed material about 3 to 7 feet (1 to 2 meters) thick.

"This perpetual contamination of Vesta with material native to elsewhere in the solar system is a dramatic example of an apparently common process that changes many solar system objects," said Tom McCord, the other lead author and a Dawn team member based at the Bear Fight Institute, Winthrop, Wash. "Earth likely got the ingredients for life -- organics and water -- this way."

Launched in 2007, Dawn spent more than a year investigating Vesta. It departed in September 2012 and is currently on its way to the dwarf planet Ceres.

JPL manages the Dawn mission for NASA's Science Mission Directorate in Washington. Dawn is a project of the directorate's Discovery Program, managed by NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala. The University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) is responsible for overall Dawn mission science. Orbital Sciences Corp. in Dulles, Va., designed and built the spacecraft. The German Aerospace Center, the Max Planck Institute for Solar System Research, the Italian Space Agency and the Italian National Astrophysical Institute are international partners on the mission team. The California Institute of Technology in Pasadena manages JPL for NASA.

Wall Street closed for second day

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The stock market was closed for a second straight day on Tuesday as cash equity trading was canceled in the wake of Hurricane Sandy.

Tuesday's shutdown was the first time weather had resulted in a two-day market shutdown since the Great Blizzard of 1888. Exchanges expect to reopen on Wednesday.

NYSE Euronext said the New York Stock Exchange would open, although it will switch to fully electronic trading if necessary. Nasdaq OMX's Nasdaq Stock Market will also be operating on Wednesday, a source familiar with the matter said.

Index futures stopped trading electronically at 9:15 a.m. on Tuesday (1315 GMT) and ended the session largely flat. S&P index futures ended 0.2 percent higher.

Futures will reopen at 7 p.m. ET (2300 GMT) for the overnight session during European and Asian hours, closing again at 9:15 a.m. Wednesday morning.

Sandy, a mammoth storm, slammed into a large swathe of the densely populated U.S. eastern seaboard on Monday, forcing hundreds of thousands to seek higher ground, halting public transport and closing schools, businesses, financial markets and government departments. At least 18 people died and more than eight million homes and businesses were without power.

Investors expect heightened volatility when markets do reopen as the two-day closure creates pent-up demand.

Certain sectors are seen as especially tied to the fallout from the storm, which caused major flooding from storm surge during high tides, along with extensive damage from high winds and lashing rain. Disaster-modeling company Eqecat estimates Sandy caused between $10 billion and $20 billion in total economic damages, with $5 billion to $10 billion in insured losses.

Construction sectors as well as retailers such as Home Depot may see a boost from the eventual rebuilding effort, though airlines, which were forced to cancel thousands of flights, could see sharp falls. Insurance companies will also be in focus.

Anti-corruption crusader rattles India's political class

NEW DELHI (Reuters) - From a shabby house in one of New Delhi's grimmest suburbs, a mild-mannered former tax official has launched a salvo of accusations of corruption involving some of India's most powerful people, rocking the political establishment.

In quick succession, Arvind Kejriwal has publicly leveled charges of shady dealings against the son-in-law of ruling Congress party chief Sonia Gandhi, the outgoing law minister and the leader of the main opposition party.

His claims, carried live and endlessly raked over by breathless 24/7 television news networks, tap into popular outrage over the deep-rooted corruption in Indian politics, government and business that is often endured but rarely confronted in so public a manner, even by the media.

"Our purpose is to tell the people that every single political party is corrupt. They are in collusion with each other, they protect each other," Kejriwal told Reuters as he sat in a sparsely furnished office receiving a stream of visitors.

While none of Kejriwal's claims have yet led to any formal investigations, his targeting of high-profile individuals is unprecedented.

Anti-corruption activists have in the past pressed for stricter rules to tackle corruption but have refrained from naming and shaming. Even rival political parties have tended to shy away from personal attacks.

It is, though, the parties that Indians perceive as the most corrupt institutions, according to Transparency International. A recent survey of upper house lawmakers by National Election Watch found their average net worth stood at about $2.3 million. Lawmakers earn about $900 a month.

CRUSADER OR OPPORTUNIST?

Kejriwal has fought a decade-long campaign to bring more transparency to government, but it was in 2010 that he began to pursue corruption more vigorously.

He was one of the architects of the India Against Corruption movement led by veteran social activist Anna Hazare, 75, whose public hunger strike against graft last year led to an outpouring of support from millions of middle-class Indians disgusted by the venality of the ruling class.

Corruption is part of daily life in India - from bribes paid for something as simple as getting a gas connection, passport or avoiding a traffic violation, to multi-billion-dollar scandals.

Hazare's campaign has fizzled, but Kejriwal's targeting of high-profile individuals has thrust him into the spotlight.

In the space of a few weeks the diminutive former bureaucrat, who often wears a short-sleeve check shirt that seems one size too big for him, has become a media sensation. His news conferences attract hundreds of reporters, and he has announced he is launching his own political party.

His critics dismiss him as a political opportunist, but acknowledge his shrewd use of the media, especially television, to amplify his anti-corruption crusade.

"He has shaken up the system. Whether that will result in the cleansing of the system, I don't know," said political commentator Swapan Dasgupta.

None of Kejriwal's corruption claims - which are based on government documents obtained through India's Right to Information Act or whistleblowers - amount to a "smoking gun". But his outspokenness has emboldened Indian media to launch their own investigations into those named.

TARGETS INDIA'S POWERFUL

A Congress party leader called Kejriwal a "self-serving ambitious megalomaniac" after he produced documents alleging irregularities in land deals involving Sonia Gandhi's businessman son-in-law, Robert Vadra, and India's biggest property developer, DLF Ltd.

Vadra has denied the allegations, saying they were "utterly false, entirely baseless and defamatory". DLF, which has also strongly denied any impropriety, saw nearly $580 million wiped off its market value in a single day after Kejriwal's claims.

In making the allegations, Kejriwal trod on dangerous ground. The charges punctured the almost bullet-proof wall of silence that surrounds the Gandhi-Nehru dynasty, which is viewed as the closest thing India has to a royal family.

Kejriwal, 44, smiles beneath his neatly trimmed moustache when asked about the bitter verbal attacks on him. "We expected all this to happen, which only means that we have been effective. They are all rattled," he said.

Outgoing Law Minister Salman Khurshid called Kejriwal an ant trying to take on an elephant after he alleged a non-governmental group led by Khurshid and his wife misused funds.

The Khurshids have denied any wrongdoing, and the prime minister publicly demonstrated his support by making him foreign minister on Sunday.

One of Khurshid's cabinet colleagues said he did not believe Kejriwal's allegations that Khurshid had embezzled a sum equivalent to $134,000. "It is a very small amount for a central minister," he said, adding that he would have taken the charge seriously if the amount had been 100 times larger.

The opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) called Kejriwal a "hitman" after he raised questions about a land deal involving BJP president Nitin Gadkari. Gadkari also denied any wrongdoing.

RAG-TAG CORRUPTION FIGHTERS

On any given day, the three-storey office of Kejriwal's India Against Corruption in the east Delhi suburb of Ghaziabad is a hive of activity.

Activists on plastic chairs tap away at laptops recording citizens' complaints. Piles of pamphlets titled "Power to the People" are stacked in a corner, while pictures of independence hero Mahatma Gandhi dot the walls.

A small rag-tag group of paid staff and volunteers help direct a sophisticated media campaign that includes Twitter, Facebook, and mass text messages and emails.

In the lull that has followed Kejriwal's series of corruption claims, questions have arisen about his "judge, jury, prosecutor" approach, how he can sustain media interest in his campaign without more sensational claims, and whether he is being manipulated by political parties to smear opponents.

"Mr Kejriwal has done a signal service by raising the issue of endemic corruption. But he does not seem to have the patience to wait for one set of charges to be proved or disproved before coming up with another," the Hindustan Times newspaper said.

Prashant Bhushan, a veteran Supreme Court lawyer and legal advisor to Kejriwal, insists that the allegations of wrongdoing are all carefully screened before they are made public. He acknowledged, however, that it was possible some of them may have ultimately emanated from certain political parties.

POLITICAL FIGHT LOOMS

Kejriwal dismisses media efforts to cast him as an Indian Julian Assange, the controversial founder of WikiLeaks.

"Our idea is not to keep exposing people. Our purpose is to change the political establishment," Kejriwal said.

Kejriwal has yet to name his party, which will contest upcoming state and national elections, but his decision to enter politics has raised eyebrows. Some political commentators, and even former comrades, call him a naive idealist who will become just another voice in a noisy parliament.

Kejriwal, who is shy and soft-spoken away from the television cameras, straightens up in his plastic chair and speaks with passion when asked to respond to such criticism.

"Without jumping into the system, it will be impossible to clean up the system. We are going to challenge this political system on a daily basis," he said.

NEW YORK (AP) ? New York City Marathon organizers expect Hurricane Sandy to have little effect on Sunday's race.

"We're extraordinarily lucky the marathon is not today," New York Road Runners President Mary Wittenberg said during a conference call Monday as wind and rain started to batter the city.

Instead, she said, "we have time on our side" ? enough to prepare the course and for runners to travel to the city after the superstorm passes through.

And if flooding or other damage affects the course or logistics, NYRR has contingency plans every year to adjust to any potential problems.

The route through the five boroughs mostly avoids areas considered at highest risk for flooding. The biggest concerns center on getting entrants their numbers and to the starting line on Staten Island.

The ferry buildings used by about half the runners to travel from Manhattan to the start are in at-risk areas. Many other entrants take buses through the Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel, which could flood. The Javits Center, where runners pick up their numbers, is also in an affected area.

The storm could knock down trees and limbs in Central Park, where the 26.2-mile race finishes. Wittenberg noted that the city was able to clear the park in time for last year's race a week after a freak snowstorm caused extensive damage.

NYRR organizes about 50 events a year and has dealt with obstacles ranging from heavy snow to lightning to security concerns.

"We've been through close to it all," Wittenberg said.

Organizers expect to reschedule flights to get all the elite athletes to New York early. And Wittenberg was confident that most of the nearly 20,000 amateur international runners signed up would eventually make it in time. The hours for number pickup will probably be extended for those who arrive late Saturday.

For runners who can't get to New York, the deadline to withdraw from the race and guarantee a spot in next year's event likely will be pushed back from Wednesday to Saturday. They would still have to pay the entry fee again next year under normal race policy.

The ceremonial finish-line painting scheduled for Wednesday has been canceled, along with a news conference Tuesday. A children's run Thursday has been moved from Central Park to an indoor track, and the pavilion in the park has been taken down for the time being. If power is lost, generators or backup systems are in key locations.

Otherwise, Wittenberg expects race week will look much the same to New Yorkers and competitors. Extra time is always built into planning, and 700 part-time workers and 8,000 volunteers ensure the course can be set up quickly.

"We remain extremely confident we will have an amazing weekend," she said.

As the video by Julia Beverly (and posted on Ozone Magazine's YouTube channel) shows, the former "Fresh Prince" picked up the microphone and busted out into a freestyle rap, which segued into his hit "Summertime." He then followed that up with?a raucous rendition of the theme to "The Fresh Prince of Bel Air," the show that brought him to the non-music mainstream back in 1990. Meanwhile, Doug E. Fresh stood by his side, providing the rhythmic backbeat.

According to The Daily Mail, Union was thrilled with the gift and gave Smith a "thank you" hug after he finished.?Union and Smith appeared together in 2003's "Bad Boys II," and she co-starred in "Ride or Die," which he executive produced that same year.

Flood Insurance + Hurricane Sandy = A Sign? | Budgets Are Sexy

So I don?t know if this is a sign or not, but we literally JUST got a notice in the mail asking if we wanted to renew our flood insurance for the year ;) Right as Hurricane Sandy is about to hit hard and wreak havoc all around us! Yikes. (For all you reading this right now on the East coast, I hope you?re doing okay and you?re nice and safe!)

And the funny thing here was that I was literally just telling the Mrs. last week that we should probably fore go it this round because odds are we won?t need it, haha? And then of course news of Hurricane Sandy hits and everyone starts freaking out. I didn?t go anywhere this weekend with someone mentioning how bad it?s going to be, or how much water/sand/batteries they still need to get to survive this once in a lifetime storm. And now because of everyone else I?m scared too! Haha? but as my wife puts it, better to be safe than stupid. So I guess it couldn?t hurt that we stocked up a little bit too.

But anyways, back to the flood insurance stuff. By a show of hands, how many of you think it?s worth it? And how many of you have actually *purchased* some? Unfortunately I can?t see your hands right now (or maybe I?m right behind you? Boogy boogy!) but with everything, it probably depends on your comfort levels and how much risk you?re willing to accept. And where you actually reside too ? though humans being what we are, there?s no telling what we could mess up and accidentally cause some flooding ourselves :( I?m just as scared as that as I am it all coming from the outside in! Haha? I ain?t no handyman, that?s for sure?

Last year we signed up to it because one of the major storms DID scare us into thinking a flood could happen at any time, even though the closest body of water was pretty far away. When it just pours and pours all day long around you, though, you can?t help but wonder if it?ll eventually rise up and force itself right into your home. And with me being gone so much with Love Drop (we were flying to a new state once or twice a month), the last thing I wanted to do was worry the Mrs. even more and have to clean up the mess if God forbid it came to that. So the extra protection w/ the flood insurance def. made us feel better ? knowing we can just call up USAA right away and get the process of resolving things started ASAP. It made a lot of sense last year.

It?s a weird situation ?cuz on one? hand you DON?T want to use it if you buy it because it means something bad just happened, haha, but on the other hand you DO because you?ve been paying for it so long! :) I guess it?s kinda like car insurance in that regard, only that?s usually mandatory and more likely you *will* end up using at some point or another unfortunately.

Anyways, here was everything swirling in my mind before we made a decision:

This hurricane going around us right now is just nuts.
If this one doesn?t cause water damage, is it possible other ones will later this year?
Do we want to tap our Monster Savings if the $hit hits the fan and we didn?t sign up?
Or do we just pony up the measly $200 (in the grand scheme of things) and cover us a ton more?
How much is that peace of mind worth?
How annoying is it to reconsider this every single year?? (Haha?)

After some thorough chats and beers last night, the wife and I decided to just bite the bullet and pay the premium again so we can have one less thing to worry about going forward. Yes it sucks we?re out a cool $200 now, especially with all the other stuff we?ve needed to maintained around this house lately, but at the same time we?d be incredibly PISSED at ourselves if God forbid something happened and we had to activate it. I think the money lost greatly surpasses the fear of regret in this particular instance. Mainly because it would just be so incredibly expensive if a flood DID take over our entire basement! Or any other areas of the house for that matter.

So that?s what we did. We shelled out the money and locked it in once and for all as we brace for this crazy hurricane to hit. Making USAA either super brilliant with their timing of these notices being mailed, or the Big Man upstairs is trying to give us a sign to make sure and pay attention ;) Regardless though, we think it was the best move.

FDNY?s one-woman Twitter team guiding New Yorkers

FDNY Social Media Manager Emily RahimiAs Storm Sandy barreled down on the Northeast on Monday, a one-woman response team at the Fire Department of New York monitored Twitter through the night to help people in need.

Emily Rahimi, a seven-year veteran at the FDNY, kept New Yorkers updated on developments from a storm that flooded many parts of the city Monday night through the official department Twitter feed. In a flurry of more than 100 tweets, Rahimi, who was still working at her desk on Tuesday morning, replied to cries for help sent out on the social media service, passed along updates from Mayor Michael Bloomberg and followed up when New Yorkers posted tweets of thanks.

"I was just tweeting to people who were not able to get through to 911," Rahimi told Yahoo News.

Rahimi posted updates to the official FDNY Twitter account urging those facing emergencies to dial 911. Because the response effort was divided among city government agencies, calling 911 allowed dispatchers to filter out assignments instead of every request going to the fire department.

"*Do not* tweet emergency calls," Rahimi wrote as the storm hit.

But for those unable to access a phone or who could not get through, Rahimi was there to help.

"My friends' parents who are trapped on #StatenIsland are at 238 Weed Ave. Water almost up to 2nd flr.," posted Michael Luo, an investigative reporter for The New York Times.

"I have contacted dispatch," Rahimi responded within minutes. "They will try to send help as soon as they can."

Rahimi's tweets sometimes helped serve as a much-needed voice of support while victims of the storm waited for help to arrive.

"[A] volunteer's brother is trapped in 301 oriental blvd apt 4h can u help us?" a user with the account name @bklyndafna posted on Twitter.

"Has he called 911?" Rahimi posted in response.

"yes no response," @bklyndafna said.

"That area is busy now. Units are working as quickly/safely as possible. Will make sure dispatch is on it. Keep in touch with him," Rahimi wrote back.

The FDNY Twitter feed is full of conversations between distressed friends and relatives and the FDNY, which offered support and guidance.

The account is still up and running, providing advice for poststorm safety and, of course, still on the lookout for those who are stranded.

Massive news for US soccer fans

Any announcement involving English Premier League and its broadcast destinations qualifies as ?big news.? But Sunday?s big news of NBC Universal acquiring exclusive U.S. rights is, as our English friends abroad might say, ?Massive!?

First, it?s a remarkably exciting time for domestic soccer watching. (And for ProSoccerTalk, which is an NBC Universal product. But more on that later ?)

Fox Soccer Channel, the previous home for EPL rights, for all the great games and analysis it delivered, could never match the market penetration of the NBC networks. That means that more soccer fans can now share in more of the ongoing EPL greatness ? and make no mistake, it is glorious. ?More viewers can attach themselves to the quality, history, passion and star value that makes the English Premier League product the world?s best by most standards.

If you look at what NBC production quality has brought to Major League Soccer ? this is coming from voices in the industry and around the media, not just from me ? it?s easy to get excited about NBC?s plans for EPL production and promotion. NBC has devoted tremendous resources to its MLS productions, and the quality shows. There is zero reason to believe more of the same isn?t ahead for the globe?s top soccer league.

Second, NBC?s win is an unfortunate loss for Fox Soccer Channel, another setback to the network that has meant so much to domestic soccer supporters over the last decade or so.

There was a time when fans in the United States had very few options for watching top-flight soccer; Fox Soccer Channel has been there over the last 10 years or so, supplying safe harbor (providing that your cable system offered it.)

So fans are surely feeling a pang of bittersweet over the news. I am, personally.

Penguin - Pearson | Always Learning

Pearson and Bertelsmann today announce an agreement to create the world?s leading consumer publishing organisation by combining Penguin and Random House.

The combination brings together two of the world?s leading English language publishers, with highly complementary skills and strengths. Random House is the leading English language publisher in the US and the UK, while Penguin is the world?s most famous publishing brand and has a strong presence in fast-growing developing markets. Both companies have a long history of publishing excellence, and both have been pioneers in the dramatic industry transformation towards digital publishing and bookselling.

Under the terms of the agreement, Penguin and Random House will combine their businesses in a newly-created joint venture named Penguin Random House. Bertelsmann will own 53% of the joint venture and Pearson will own 47%. The joint venture will exclude Bertelsmann?s trade publishing business in Germany and Pearson will retain rights to use the Penguin brand in education markets worldwide.

Bertelsmann will nominate five directors to the Board of Penguin Random House and Pearson will nominate four. John Makinson, currently chairman and chief executive of Penguin, will be chairman of Penguin Random House and Markus Dohle, currently chief executive of Random House, will be its chief executive.

In reviewing the long-term trends and considerable change affecting the consumer publishing industry, Pearson and Bertelsmann both concluded that the publishing and commercial success of Penguin and Random House can best be sustained and enhanced through a partnership with another major international publishing house. They believe that the combined organisation will have a stronger platform and greater resources to invest in rich content, new digital publishing models and high-growth emerging markets. The organisation will generate synergies from shared resources such as warehousing, distribution, printing and central functions. Pearson and Bertelsmann intend that the combined organisation?s level of organic investment in authors and new product models will exceed the total investment of Penguin and Random House as independent publishing houses.

The two companies believe that the combination will create a highly successful new organisation, both creatively and commercially, with the breadth and investment capacity to deliver significant benefits. Readers will have access to a wider and more diverse range of frontlist and backlist content in multiple print and digital formats. Authors will gain a greater depth and breadth of service, from traditional frontlist publishing to innovative self-publishing, on a global basis. Employees of the new organisation will be part of the world?s first truly global consumer publishing company, committed to sustained editorial excellence and long-term investment in a rich diversity of content. And shareholders will benefit from participating in the consolidation of the consumer publishing industry without having to deploy additional capital.

The combination is subject to customary regulatory and other approvals, including merger control clearances, and is expected to complete in the second half of 2013.

In 2011, Random House reported revenues of ?1.7bn (?1.48bn) and operating profit of ?185m (?161m). Penguin reported revenues of ?1.0bn and operating profit of ?111m with total assets of ?1.0bn. After completion, Pearson will report its 47% share of profit after tax from the joint venture as an associate in its consolidated income statement.

Under the terms of the agreement, neither Pearson nor Bertelsmann may sell any part of their shareholding in Penguin Random House for three years. To protect Pearson?s interests as a minority shareholder, if Bertelsmann declines a Pearson offer to sell its entire shareholding, Pearson may require a recapitalisation by which Penguin Random House raises debt of up to 3.5x EBITDA, with a dividend distributed to shareholders in line with their ownership. In addition, from five years after completion, either partner may require an IPO of Penguin Random House.
