Lost in translocation? How bird song could help save species

May 22, 2013 ? Translocation -- or moving animals to safer places -- is a vital tool for saving species from extinction. Many factors influence the success of these new populations, including habitat quality, predators, capture and release techniques, the number and sex of individuals, and their genetic diversity. Now new research, the first of its kind, published in the British Ecological Society's Journal of Applied Ecology suggests bird song could also be important.

Ecologists from the University of Waikato and Lincoln University in New Zealand studied the North Island k?kako, an iconic bird with a haunting, organ-like song. Once widespread in the North Island, loss of habitat by deforestation and predation by rats, possums and stoats decimated the population. By 1999, fewer than 400 pairs remained, and between 2001 and 2007, several pairs were moved from Te Urewera National Park to two other reserves: Boundary Stream Mainland Island and Ngapukeriki.

To find out how moving the k?kako has affected their song, the researchers made hundreds of recordings in the three populations and analysed differences in song using sonograms. They then used playback experiments to discover how birds from one population reacted to another populations' song.

They found the songs of translocated birds had diverged substantially from the source population, becoming less diverse with shorter and higher-pitched elements. According to Dr Laura Molles from Lincoln University: "Not only how k?kako sing in translocated populations, but also what they sing differs from k?kako in the source population."

The greatest changes were found in the population that had been translocated for longest, indicating the songs may become more different over time. But despite the divergence between each population's song, the playback experiments showed that the birds could not yet tell them apart.

"The songs diverge because birds such as k?kako learn their songs from parents, siblings and neighbours. As translocation usually involves only a small number of indivuals, they will take with them only a small portion of all the song elements in the larger source population. Subsequent variation in small populations will depend on that subset of songs and will then differ from the larger song pool in the source population," Dr Molles explains.

The study has important implications for conservation. Although in this study the k?kako populations have not been separated for long enough to cause song incompatibility, it will occur in time, the authors say. Once that happens, releasing additional birds into these populations could be problematic because song incompatibility could make interbreeding difficult.

As a result, says Dr Molles, conservationists should consider song variation as part of bird reintroductions: "We need to be aware that behavioural factors like song can also affect translocation success and recovery of endangered birds, and adapt our management of these populations accordingly. This means that we may have to work harder but the good news is that if we consider one more factor that we now know may also affect translocation, we will be more likely to succeed in conserving birds."

The North Island k?kako is one of New Zealand's most iconic bird species. The size of a common pigeon, both males and females have blue-grey plumage with black masks and striking bright blue wattles. Both sexes sing, and pairs duet, with a haunting voice and the birds' astonishingly varied organ-like notes can be heard over 1km away.

They have limited flying power, instead moving like squirrels through the branches and gliding from hill tops to valleys. They live in the temperate rainforest, feeding mainly on fruit and leaves. Once widespread, their numbers collapsed due to deforestation and predation by rats, stoats and possums, and by 1999 fewer than 400 pairs remained. Thanks to translocation to safe offshore islands, numbers have increased to around 800 pairs today.

Nigeria: Islamic extremist inmates to be released

ENUGU, Nigeria (AP) ? Nigeria's military said Tuesday that the West African nation would release some of the prisoners it has taken in the country's fight against Islamic extremists ? including all the women now held in custody.

The surprise statement from the Defense Ministry, while lacking specifics about how many would be released and when, represents a clear concession by the Nigerian government to the insurgents it is fighting in a military offensive in the nation's restive northeast. The leader of the Islamic extremist network Boko Haram, the main group now fighting the government, repeatedly has mentioned security agencies arresting members' women and children.

In the statement, Brig. Gen. Chris Olukolade said those released would be turned over to state governors for "further rehabilitation." It also mentioned a presidential panel now exploring a possible amnesty deal for insurgents.

"The measure, which is in line with presidential magnanimity to enhance peace efforts in the country, will result in freedom for suspects including all women under custody," the statement read.

The statement, like the others issued by the military since President Goodluck Jonathan declared emergency rule May 14, offered no specifics. Reuben Abati, a presidential spokesman, also could not be reached for comment Tuesday night.

Boko Haram, whose name means "Western education is sacrilege" in the Hausa language of Nigeria's predominantly Muslim north, has been waging a campaign of shootings and bombings since 2010. In recent weeks, the violence has gotten more intense as Nigeria's military says the group now uses anti-aircraft guns against the government.

The military's statement could offer a small branch for negotiations, as Boko Haram's leader Abubakar Shekau repeatedly has called for the release of all the group's imprisoned followers ? including women and children. However, Shekau also has said Nigeria must adopt strict Islamic law, something that would be unpalatable to many in this multiethnic nation of more than 160 million people.

Under the president's state of emergency directive, soldiers have ultimate control over security matters in Adamawa, Borno and Yobe states. Over the last week, witnesses and Associated Press journalists have seen convoys of soldiers in trucks and buses moving through the region, as well as trucks carrying armored personnel carriers. Jet fighters also have been seen flying low over Yola, the capital of Adamawa state.

However, journalists have not been able to access the remote areas that Nigeria's military claims it has waged firefights against Islamic extremists. At least 35 suspected extremist fighters have been killed in the fighting, according to military statements and a security officials who spoke to the AP. The military says it has arrested at least 205 suspected extremists, but it remains unclear where many were arrested and where all are being held now.

This new military campaign comes on top of a previous massive deployment of soldiers and police to the region. That deployment failed to stop violence by Islamic extremists, who have killed more than 1,600 people since 2010, according to an AP count. It also has seen soldiers arrest, torture and even kill civilians, while Jonathan himself acknowledged extremists have taken over villages and town in the region.

As the violence continues, some 2,400 people have fled the region for the neighboring nation of Niger, according to a statement Tuesday by the International Committee of the Red Cross. The Red Cross described those fleeing as mostly Nigeriens citizens who "are completely destitute."

Nigeria's National Assembly also offered Jonathan legislative approval to the statement of emergency Tuesday, though the versions passed by the House of Representatives and the Senate must now be reconciled. House members ordered their measure include a demand that the government provide compensation for those affected by terrorist attacks.

Gold Chart Pattern

Gold_May2013

In a post two weeks back, the 6 months daily bar chart pattern of gold was analysed with the help of certain technical patterns to explain the descent of gold?s price into a bear market. For a longer-term perspective, let us look at the 2 years weekly bar chart pattern of gold.

Note that the zone between 1500 and 1550 had been providing strong support to gold?s price. Last month, the 1500 level was breached decisively, followed by a high-volume drop (?panic bottom?) below the 200 week EMA. The subsequent pullback moved above the 200 week EMA, but failed to regain the 1500 level.

Gold?s price dropped below the 200 week EMA last week, and looks ready to fall much lower. The 20 week EMA is falling like a stone below the 50 week EMA. Weekly technical indicators are looking bearish and oversold. MACD is falling deeper into negative territory below its signal line. RSI is trying to emerge from its oversold zone. Slow stochastic is sliding down towards its oversold zone.

Bears are using every rise to sell. The time for bottom-fishing hasn?t arrived yet.

Silver Chart Pattern

Silver_May2013

The 2 years weekly bar chart pattern of silver shows a support zone between 26 and 28 that was decisively breached in Apr ?13. A high-volume ?panic bottom? formed at 22, and after a brief upward bounce, the ?panic bottom? was breached as silver?s price dropped to the target of 20 (mentioned in the previous post).

Silver?s price has spent 6 straight weeks below the 200 week EMA. The 20 week EMA has crossed below the 200 week EMA, and the 50 week EMA may follow soon. A long-term bear market is looming.

Weekly technical indicators are looking bearish and oversold. MACD is falling below its signal line in negative territory, and has entered its oversold zone. Both RSI and Slow stochastic have remained inside their oversold zones for a few weeks.

Looks like ?game over? for the bulls. Any attempt at a rally will probably be an opportunity to sell.

Ark. treasurer accused of taking cash from broker

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) ? Arkansas' state treasurer was accused Monday of taking at least $36,000 in cash ? sometimes stashed in a pie box ? from a broker who later came to manage a large share of the state's $3.3 billion stock and bond portfolio.

Democrat Martha Shoffner, who made her initial court appearance Monday, said she had no plans to resign despite members of her own party joining Republican calls for her to step down.

Shoffner and was released on her own recognizance. She was also ordered to surrender her passport.

Federal prosecutors allege Shoffner accepted $12,000 a year from a broker who would sometimes deliver cash in a pie box, pie included. The broker is cooperating with investigators.

"The allegations against Ms. Shoffner are serious and they completely erode the public trust that we put in our elected officials, if they prove to be true." U.S. Attorney Chris Thyer said at a news conference.

Shoffner told reporters outside the courthouse Monday that she does not intend to resign. She was re-elected in 2010 and has faced inquiries over the past year about the way her office has handled state investments.

She didn't enter a plea Monday, and her attorney, Chuck Banks, said she'd plead not guilty at the appropriate time. A federal grand jury will decide whether to indict Shoffner, who is charged with attempt and conspiracy to commit extortion under color of official right. A next court date was not set.

Shoffner spent the weekend in Pulaski County Jail.

"This has been a very, very tough proceeding for her and a tough weekend," Banks said. "I'm going to send her home right now. We're going to get some rest, and I will talk to her this afternoon about preparing her defense."

An affidavit filed in Little Rock federal court said a broker ? unidentified in court documents ? would roll up money in $6,000 increments and have it delivered to Shoffner's office in a pie box. The document, by FBI Special Agent Richard McLain, said the broker has been granted immunity in exchange for his or her cooperation.

Shoffner was criticized in a legislative audit last year for bond sales that blocked the state from earning more than $400,000.

"(The broker) began receiving more of the state's bond business after he/she began paying Shoffner $6,000 cash every six months," the affidavit said. The broker "recognized his/her bond business with the state grew because of the payments he/she made to Shoffner."

The affidavit said the payments were made after Shoffner asked the broker for $1,000 a month to pay her rent in Little Rock.

The state's top elected officials, including Gov. Mike Beebe, Attorney General Dustin McDaniel and U.S. Sen. Mark Pryor, called for Shoffner to resign.

"I think she should resign immediately," said Beebe, adding that the details provided by prosecutors are so specific that Shoffner has been rendered unable to lead.

"It would be very hard, in my opinion, for that office to properly function under her continued leadership," the Democrat added.

The heads of the Democratic and Republican parties also said Shoffner should step down.

"The incompetence that has been uncovered, the criminal charges that are pending, and the distraction from her office that due process will involve make her unfit to continue in her service as State Treasurer," Arkansas Republican Party Chairman Doyle Webb said.

When asked after the hearing whether she planned to step down, Shoffner responded: "No, not at this moment."

Banks said he "probably" would advise Shoffner to resign, but that the call is ultimately up to her.

"If she cannot properly perform her duties and responsibilities and still protect herself in a crime accusation, then to me it would be something for strong consideration," he told reporters.

The affidavit said Shoffner was arrested at her home in Newport in a sting operation. The broker agreed to record the meeting and bring $6,000 stashed in a pie box, the affidavit said.

Shoffner was arrested after the broker left her home and special agents with the FBI executed a search warrant. The affidavit said the $6,000 was located inside a cigarette package in Shoffner's kitchen.

"Shoffner admitted she knew it was wrong to accept the payments," the affidavit said.

Thyer said he did not know how much the state had invested with the broker, or how much commission the broker made from the bond transactions. Thyer said it wasn't an easy decision for prosecutors to grant immunity to the broker, who he wouldn't name.

"It was a decision made out of necessity more than anything else," Thyer said. "At the core of this particular conspiracy as alleged in the affidavit there were two people, and if both of those two people remained silent we would not be here today."

Shoffner told The Associated Press in a September interview that she was trying to maximize profits for the state when she sold the bonds early.

"We're here to work for the people of Arkansas," Shoffner said at the time. "We're the safekeepers of the money and, as I said, that's my responsibility. I certainly want to work with audit in whatever avenue they want to follow."

Water may reshape energy industry

Demand for fresh water could exceed supply by an estimated 40 percent by 2030, pushing up prices for the water-intensive energy industry. Soaring water prices would help wind, solar, and natural gas, but hurt coal and nuclear plants.

By Eli Hinckley,?Guest blogger / May 19, 2013

A worker helps monitor water pumping pressure and temperature, at the site of a natural gas hydraulic fracturing and extraction operation run by Encana Oil & Gas (USA) Inc., outside Rifle, in western Colorado. A doubling of water prices wouldn't hurt energy operations, but soaring prices would.

Why It Matters

Energy: The industry uses 23 percent of fresh water globally and 40 percent in the US.

Environment:?Higher water prices would be one way to ration increasingly precious fresh water, where demand is outstripping supply.

There is a broad and growing consensus that freshwater is undervalued. It is a limited, but vital, commodity without a price. In nearly every region the price of water is the cost of water access rights, treatment costs, and transportation costs. There is no price or market for the water itself.

That will begin to change. Prolonged drought and overuse have depleted freshwater reserves at the same time that demand is rising rapidly. The resulting imbalance has some projections of demand for freshwater exceeding supply by?as much as 40% by 2030?. Increasingly, water starved regions have begun to look to ways to both reduce overall use and to prioritize different types of use. While there are a number of policy approaches, one that seems to have wide support is the idea of regional exchanges where water could be priced (with adjustments for preferred uses) and sold.

The implications for the energy industry are significant. Fuel extraction is water intensive, especially for mining and fracking extraction - for fracked natural gas, about a gallon of water is required to extract one mmbtu. Electric generation from fossil fuels also requires large amounts of water. The average kWh produced from coal-fired electric generation uses a gallon of water, and while natural gas averages less water use, nuclear uses significantly more.

Initially, reduction in use will focus on eliminating waste and high-use-low-value activities (like watering a lawn), but as the limitations become more acute some uses will simply cease to be provided for, or the cost of use will increase, forcing a rebalancing of the ways water gets used.

Obama Pivots to Jobs Tour at End of Scandal Filled Week

ap obama baltimore 01 mi 130517 wblog Obama Pivots to Jobs Tour at End of Scandal Filled Weekobama

After a week filled with political scandals, President Obama turned to promoting his jobs tour in his weekly address Saturday.

"That's why I like getting out of the Washington echo chamber whenever I can - because too often, our politics aren't focused on the same things you are. Working hard. Supporting your family and your community. Making sure your kids have every chance in life," Obama said in his weekly address Saturday.

"I'm going to keep trying to work with both parties in Washington to make progress on your priorities. Because I know that if we come together around creating more jobs, educating more of our kids, and building new ladders of opportunity for everyone who's willing to climb them - we'll all prosper, together," he said.

The president traveled to Baltimore, Md. Friday on his second stop for the "Middle Class Jobs and Opportunity Tour." He spoke at a dredging company, visited with children at an elementary school, and stopped at a community center focused on helping fathers and families.

Obama's trip came as he tried to pivot attention back to his second term agenda as a series of political scandals involving the IRS, Benghazi, and the Department of Justice dominated much of the week.

But while the president attempted to divert attention from the political scandals of the week, Republicans used the incidents as a rallying call to repeal the healthcare law.

RELATED: IRS Planted Question About Tax Exempt Groups

"Now: just think about the fact that it's the IRS that will be responsible for enforcing many of these regulations. If we've learned anything this week, it's that the IRS needs less power, not more'" Rep. Andy Harris, R-MD, said in the GOP weekly address, "As a matter of fact, it turns out that the IRS official who oversaw the operation that's under scrutiny for targeting conservatives is now in charge of the IRS's ObamaCare office. You can't make this stuff up."

"Well here's the problem: the train wreck is already here. ObamaCare is knocking Americans off the ladder of opportunity, and the sooner we repeal it, the sooner we can start fixing health care for working families," he said.

Navy pilot earns degree in combat zone

SAN DIEGO (AP) ? Finals week was dangerous for Thomas Saenz.

The Navy lieutenant needed armed guards and an armored car to get to an exam site, in Kabul, Afghanistan. A deadly bomb attack also caused him to his miss classes ? transmitted live via the Internet ? but he persevered and earned a master's degree in engineering from the University of Southern California while commanding a top security team.

His class graduated on Friday, as he joins a growing number of service members earning college degrees while deployed in a war zone.

"Not only was he out there living on the edge, but he had to get his homework done," USC professor Frank Alvidrez said.

The Obama administration is pushing universities to find creative ways to help service members complete their degrees as it tracks the success of its post 9/11 GI Bill, which is designed to be the most comprehensive education benefit for veterans since World War II.

Enrollments for the new GI Bill number more than 480,000, according to the Veteran's Administration, which is starting to track the number of graduates.

It's not known just how many others like Saenz earn their degrees while in combat. A commencement ceremony for 100 war-zone graduates from various universities is planned in late May in Kandahar.

"They really are multi-tasking in the extreme," said Bob Ludwig, spokesman for the University of Maryland University College, adding that the coursework can provide relief from the mental turmoil of war. "It really is an opportunity to step away from the battlefield and have the sort of the safety of being in a classroom."

UMUC has about 30,000 active-duty service members among its students and was among the first schools to send faculty to Iraq to teach troops in 2008 during the war. UMUC also has adjunct professors giving classes in tents in remote outposts of Afghanistan as well as online instruction on bases.

Completing degrees online is a growing phenomenon, as more traditional public universities join private, for-profit schools in offering courses.

Saenz, a 33-year-old father of two, used the GI Bill to enroll at USC but midway through his studies, the Navy pilot was called to be deployed to Afghanistan.

After getting approval from his professors and Navy commanders, Saenz spent his final year of studies racing to his computer on base at 5 a.m. to attend the live transmission of his classes before dedicating his day to overseeing security for top generals and then-Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta.

He missed a class that required his online presence when a suicide bomber blew himself up near NATO's headquarters in Kabul, killing six civilians.

The base was locked down. Saenz wrote to his professor and aide when the Internet was back up to explain his absence.

"I was worried because it was early in the semester and I was afraid it would affect my grade," he said. "But they were real supportive."

Another time, he was absent because he was arranging a helicopter to transport Army Gen. Martin Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Saenz caught up by watching the recorded classes.

"I told my class if Thomas can get his homework done on time then I don't think there are any excuses for the rest of you all," Alvidrez said. "And he pulled an 'A.' He was one of the top 10 percent."

Even getting to finals was treacherous. After military officials checked intelligence to ensure there were no imminent threats, he crossed Kabul on a highly dangerous road with armed guards in an armored SUV to the Army base where a military official was certified to give him the university exams. While there, he picked up ammo, weapons and dropped off radios to be repaired, then grabbed some barbeque at a tent.

Saenz said he was determined to finish his advanced degree ? the second person in his extended family to do so ? knowing his 10-year Navy career was ending in June. He is one of 91 service members in the university's online engineering graduate program called DEN(at)Viterbi.

An essay he wrote for one of his classes was on WWII veterans going on to lead top companies after returning home. With today's technology, he sees opportunities for veterans to follow in those footsteps more easily than ever.

"I think we're in that period again, with the post 9/11 GI Bill and all these kids coming back with their experience overseas," Saenz said. "Hopefully we can come back and do great things for our country outside of our uniform."

I'm not too far gone yet weight wise, but I'm heading there. Just calculated my body fat and at 35% which isn't good, and BMI is borderline overweight. So I know I *should* get fit, I just can't stand it!!!!!

I can't stand being out of breath and gasping for air (happens very very fast even after working out for months, actually think I have exercise induced asthma which would be useful to get checked out)
I can't stand the pain when your muscles are struggling
or the weakness from being so tired
But worse of all, I absolutely cannot handle the muscle soreness afterwords.

This has been an issue all my life, and since you guys are fellow aspies, and more prone to hypersensitiveness I was wondering if there was any tips to get around this stuff.

I'm a lazy brat so forcing myself out there is going to be REALLY REALLY HARD. And likely will give up. :X
I would force myself every semester while in college to take 1-2 gym courses just to get some sort of physical activity in.

I have taken karate, fitness walking, fencing, archery, rock climbing, on my own I've also done a lot of badminton (work), jump rope, running, weight lifting, rowing machine, tredmill, etc. I'm a fairly good swimmer too.... laser tag is a huge workout too I've discovered.

I'm competitive beyond belief and that is the sole thing that gets me through any of it, running? Find someone faster and chase after, must win!

Unfortunately I can't handle "going slow." Doing x activity for y minutes... always feel a need to go faster faster faster, see how fast I can get this done, or must lift this weight 10x so lift as fast as possible, even though I know that you're supposed to do slow, I just can't stand the activity so much I want it done asap.

So I'm at a loss. I have done all those activities, and while some are fun, the drawbacks of them make me unable to force myself to continue.

There really are few things in this world I hate more than exercise... (oh yeah, to make things worse I have serious RLS pain happen after I run (happens on its own as well but rarely anymore, but always when I run))

What is a good way for me to get even a little more fit? Small things like parking father away and walking in I can do (though often forget), but what else?
If it is an activity it's likely going to have to be competitive...
I want to learn martial arts, but the countless reps were driving me insane in karate, is there one that is more bout oriented and can actually work to "defeat" someone and "win" more often? Fencing had a lot more bouts than my karate class ever did, so considering that.
How do I keep myself to keep going and doing it?
And for the love of god, how the hell do I stop feeling so shitty!?!!!
I've taken advil/motrin, I've tried hot baths, cold showers, stretching before, stretching after, stretching day after, etc and can't seem to get rid of it or tolerate it (last week I had moved a 100lb and 50lb bed and frame myself 3x that day, the next 6 days were hell. The day after was so bad I went home early from work and went straight to sleep to sleep through it x.x)

There are many ways to excercise. I have asthma and I also struggle with my hand-to-eye coordination because of my Asperger's syndrome. It didn't stop me from getting to a 300 lb bench press in just a year.

Your first exercises are going to be that way. If the problem persists, it means that you're not eating enough protein. Contrary to popular belief spred by envious pseudointellectuals, bread and butter won't give you nearly enough protein to actually get any results.

Get a structured exercise routine. F*cking around with randomly selected exercises on randomly selected days with a randomly selected level of intensity will get you nowhere. Smile

Protein shakes are a good start.

With running, a walk/run routine is more efficient than steady jogging. Walk a ways, sprint from point to point, then walk again. It won't take long before you find that you're sprinting faster and walking further.

With exercise in general, what stopped me for a long time was fear. Fear of trying to do something, like 20 good push-ups, and failing. You almost have to forgive yourself first before you start any program, because you have to be your own cheerleader, not your own critic. Remember, exercise, no matter how short or easy, is always worth it. Don't tell yourself that if you don't spend at least 2 hours non stop at the gym it isn't worth going. Even if you just do 10 push-ups and call it a day, do them.

The protein tip is good, I would do semester long batches so know that it isn't just the starting sorenesses
Like the semester I took fencing I would do fencing 2-3x a week and another 2-3x a week of running, weight lifting, and rowing machine... was in pain that entire semester and just hated life even more.

Structure may help a little, but I'm notorious for giving up things and not sticking to them... only reason managed the previous years was because grades were dependant on going to class :X

And yeah I do "run/walk"... because walking is too boring and running too tiring, so it's sprint, then walk until can breath again, then sprint, etc... XD

And yes, I agree with the mental thing, and yes drink a lot of water actually and no to other person, I don't eat well either... planning on trying to sneak a little more health in, but these are both mutually difficult things :X

Also, curious, thought came while reading one of your articles about hardwired to hate it:

Asthma means you aren't getting enough oxygen to your cells basically, right? I assumed that it could be because I'm borderline anemic, but took iron suppliments (w/ vitamin c to absorb better) in attempt to stave off RLS pain (failed attempt, but tried nevertheless). I didn't find it helped my perceived death by gasping fish syndrome, but if it was asthma and not getting enough oxygen... could lack of oxygen while working out lead to increased muscle soreness?

A balanced diet can improve your mental state.

Cycling is better than running in my opinion, less impact on the leg joints.

With martial arts finding the right class or teacher can make a massive difference. Most Karate styles are fairly rigid in structure. Different arts will incorporate sparing into the classes earlier, you just need to try some out. The best class I attended was Tai Chi, due to the teacher, half the time spent in contact exercises. All styles do require time and effort to study the set forms though, you can expect to improve without the fundamentals.

Oh yeah, I completely forgot

The reason I think I have the asthma thing is because (and I know this is a clear sign of trying too hard) I will get to the point where my hearing gets duller until can't hear at all and...will continue until I lose all color vision ^^;;; This has been happening on/off since middle school, and wasn't nearly as lazy then as I am now (and better diet and fitness/bodyfat too was actually underweight when started college, oh how things have gone down hill)

Just frustrating when people (appear, obviously not since the state I'm in) are worse off than you and can keep going and you're about to pass out XD

OK, so addressing the impatience aspect is part of your exercise program. Impatience management. I can say I know something about that! Laughing

Pretty sure it does. My memory is vague here, but when the body goes into anaerobic mode during exercise, muscle tissue gets broken down & lactic acid & other toxins increase, causing muscle soreness. So because of your reduced lung capacity, you may go over the oxygen threshold much sooner than average.

You might also have some dietary inflammatory stuff happening...are you celiac & not watching what you eat very carefully? Or other dietary autoimmune issues?

Yes try Aikido if you have a class local, try anything until you find the right thing.

Karate is great if you are going to devote your life to it.

Have you spoken to a doctor about the asthma and anemia? Any blood tests?

Anemia has come up w/ me and the doctors which is why I tried iron supplements, asthma has not... *mumbles* needa find new doctor, last one tried sending me to a mental hospital /grudge (depression, badly, which is reason I care more about exercising for weight rather than just dieting, because it's *supposed* to be good for you)

Like what?

And I just eat a lot of crappy foods... mutual love for each other and all, not allergic to anything though intense distaste to many Razz or not eat, often too tired/lazy to eat after work, so its often an (unhealthy) snack or nothing

Sounds like the quickest "fix" to being able to tolerate this stuff is seeing dr... if I can simply breathe may be able to tolerate the soreness *tries convincing herself things really will get better*

I meditate--there are various kinds: walking, standing, sitting & lying down--& I really feel the repeated letting go of the thought & returning to the breath is basically a patience practice. Not to mention all the marvelous health benefits they keep finding. I could give you some basic instruction if you like or answer questions you might have.

Find a healthy thing & do it. For me a protein shake or smoothie would work. Quick, easy, & can be a real powerhouse of nutrition. Also, assume you're not getting enough sunlight & get your Vit. D levels tested. Strong evidence linking low levels w/depression, etc.

I see this as another try at quick when slow & steady wins the race for you. It's about avoiding pain, making the exercise pleasurable, fun. For you, I think the old adage "No pain, no gain" is a sinker. Assume pain is telling you that you got it WRONG for you. That adage is for people who have a higher pain tolerance or stronger endorphin releases or something. Not for you, I'm thinking.

Or me. If it's fun, I'll do it. If it's not fun, I won't. Simple as that. Wink
