Flood Insurance + Hurricane Sandy = A Sign? | Budgets Are Sexy

So I don?t know if this is a sign or not, but we literally JUST got a notice in the mail asking if we wanted to renew our flood insurance for the year ;) Right as Hurricane Sandy is about to hit hard and wreak havoc all around us! Yikes. (For all you reading this right now on the East coast, I hope you?re doing okay and you?re nice and safe!)

And the funny thing here was that I was literally just telling the Mrs. last week that we should probably fore go it this round because odds are we won?t need it, haha? And then of course news of Hurricane Sandy hits and everyone starts freaking out. I didn?t go anywhere this weekend with someone mentioning how bad it?s going to be, or how much water/sand/batteries they still need to get to survive this once in a lifetime storm. And now because of everyone else I?m scared too! Haha? but as my wife puts it, better to be safe than stupid. So I guess it couldn?t hurt that we stocked up a little bit too.

But anyways, back to the flood insurance stuff. By a show of hands, how many of you think it?s worth it? And how many of you have actually *purchased* some? Unfortunately I can?t see your hands right now (or maybe I?m right behind you? Boogy boogy!) but with everything, it probably depends on your comfort levels and how much risk you?re willing to accept. And where you actually reside too ? though humans being what we are, there?s no telling what we could mess up and accidentally cause some flooding ourselves :( I?m just as scared as that as I am it all coming from the outside in! Haha? I ain?t no handyman, that?s for sure?

Last year we signed up to it because one of the major storms DID scare us into thinking a flood could happen at any time, even though the closest body of water was pretty far away. When it just pours and pours all day long around you, though, you can?t help but wonder if it?ll eventually rise up and force itself right into your home. And with me being gone so much with Love Drop (we were flying to a new state once or twice a month), the last thing I wanted to do was worry the Mrs. even more and have to clean up the mess if God forbid it came to that. So the extra protection w/ the flood insurance def. made us feel better ? knowing we can just call up USAA right away and get the process of resolving things started ASAP. It made a lot of sense last year.

But here we are, 12 months later, and we?re right back to making the decision yet again. Do we shell out more money for another year and gain that peace of mind, or do we take the risk and bet on the odds the flood(s) will never come and save some hefty cash?

It?s a weird situation ?cuz on one? hand you DON?T want to use it if you buy it because it means something bad just happened, haha, but on the other hand you DO because you?ve been paying for it so long! :) I guess it?s kinda like car insurance in that regard, only that?s usually mandatory and more likely you *will* end up using at some point or another unfortunately.

Anyways, here was everything swirling in my mind before we made a decision:

• This hurricane going around us right now is just nuts.
• If this one doesn?t cause water damage, is it possible other ones will later this year?
• Do we want to tap our Monster Savings if the $hit hits the fan and we didn?t sign up?
• Or do we just pony up the measly $200 (in the grand scheme of things) and cover us a ton more?
• How much is that peace of mind worth?
• How annoying is it to reconsider this every single year?? (Haha?)

After some thorough chats and beers last night, the wife and I decided to just bite the bullet and pay the premium again so we can have one less thing to worry about going forward. Yes it sucks we?re out a cool $200 now, especially with all the other stuff we?ve needed to maintained around this house lately, but at the same time we?d be incredibly PISSED at ourselves if God forbid something happened and we had to activate it. I think the money lost greatly surpasses the fear of regret in this particular instance. Mainly because it would just be so incredibly expensive if a flood DID take over our entire basement! Or any other areas of the house for that matter.

So that?s what we did. We shelled out the money and locked it in once and for all as we brace for this crazy hurricane to hit. Making USAA either super brilliant with their timing of these notices being mailed, or the Big Man upstairs is trying to give us a sign to make sure and pay attention ;) Regardless though, we think it was the best move.

Here was the coverage we got:

• Building coverage: $30,000
• Contents coverage: $12,000
• Deductible (for both building and contents each): $1,000
• Amount this will cost us for one year: $191

Now we just pray this hurricane dies out before anything crazy happens! It will be pretty bad if we lose electricity considering my job depends on it, haha? Oh well? As long as we?re all safe and sound I?ll be one happy blogger :) Hope you guys stay out of trouble too! The fingers are a crossed.

FDNY?s one-woman Twitter team guiding New Yorkers

FDNY Social Media Manager Emily RahimiAs Storm Sandy barreled down on the Northeast on Monday, a one-woman response team at the Fire Department of New York monitored Twitter through the night to help people in need.

Emily Rahimi, a seven-year veteran at the FDNY, kept New Yorkers updated on developments from a storm that flooded many parts of the city Monday night through the official department Twitter feed. In a flurry of more than 100 tweets, Rahimi, who was still working at her desk on Tuesday morning, replied to cries for help sent out on the social media service, passed along updates from Mayor Michael Bloomberg and followed up when New Yorkers posted tweets of thanks.

"I was just tweeting to people who were not able to get through to 911," Rahimi told Yahoo News.

Rahimi posted updates to the official FDNY Twitter account urging those facing emergencies to dial 911. Because the response effort was divided among city government agencies, calling 911 allowed dispatchers to filter out assignments instead of every request going to the fire department.

"*Do not* tweet emergency calls," Rahimi wrote as the storm hit.

But for those unable to access a phone or who could not get through, Rahimi was there to help.

"My friends' parents who are trapped on #StatenIsland are at 238 Weed Ave. Water almost up to 2nd flr.," posted Michael Luo, an investigative reporter for The New York Times.

"I have contacted dispatch," Rahimi responded within minutes. "They will try to send help as soon as they can."

Rahimi's tweets sometimes helped serve as a much-needed voice of support while victims of the storm waited for help to arrive.

"[A] volunteer's brother is trapped in 301 oriental blvd apt 4h can u help us?" a user with the account name @bklyndafna posted on Twitter.

"Has he called 911?" Rahimi posted in response.

"yes no response," @bklyndafna said.

"That area is busy now. Units are working as quickly/safely as possible. Will make sure dispatch is on it. Keep in touch with him," Rahimi wrote back.

The FDNY Twitter feed is full of conversations between distressed friends and relatives and the FDNY, which offered support and guidance.

The account is still up and running, providing advice for poststorm safety and, of course, still on the lookout for those who are stranded.

Massive news for US soccer fans

Any announcement involving English Premier League and its broadcast destinations qualifies as ?big news.? But Sunday?s big news of NBC Universal acquiring exclusive U.S. rights is, as our English friends abroad might say, ?Massive!?

First, it?s a remarkably exciting time for domestic soccer watching. (And for ProSoccerTalk, which is an NBC Universal product. But more on that later ?)

Fox Soccer Channel, the previous home for EPL rights, for all the great games and analysis it delivered, could never match the market penetration of the NBC networks. That means that more soccer fans can now share in more of the ongoing EPL greatness ? and make no mistake, it is glorious. ?More viewers can attach themselves to the quality, history, passion and star value that makes the English Premier League product the world?s best by most standards.

If you look at what NBC production quality has brought to Major League Soccer ? this is coming from voices in the industry and around the media, not just from me ? it?s easy to get excited about NBC?s plans for EPL production and promotion. NBC has devoted tremendous resources to its MLS productions, and the quality shows. There is zero reason to believe more of the same isn?t ahead for the globe?s top soccer league.

Second, NBC?s win is an unfortunate loss for Fox Soccer Channel, another setback to the network that has meant so much to domestic soccer supporters over the last decade or so.

There was a time when fans in the United States had very few options for watching top-flight soccer; Fox Soccer Channel has been there over the last 10 years or so, supplying safe harbor (providing that your cable system offered it.)

So fans are surely feeling a pang of bittersweet over the news. I am, personally.

Penguin - Pearson | Always Learning

Pearson and Bertelsmann today announce an agreement to create the world?s leading consumer publishing organisation by combining Penguin and Random House.

The combination brings together two of the world?s leading English language publishers, with highly complementary skills and strengths. Random House is the leading English language publisher in the US and the UK, while Penguin is the world?s most famous publishing brand and has a strong presence in fast-growing developing markets. Both companies have a long history of publishing excellence, and both have been pioneers in the dramatic industry transformation towards digital publishing and bookselling.

Under the terms of the agreement, Penguin and Random House will combine their businesses in a newly-created joint venture named Penguin Random House. Bertelsmann will own 53% of the joint venture and Pearson will own 47%. The joint venture will exclude Bertelsmann?s trade publishing business in Germany and Pearson will retain rights to use the Penguin brand in education markets worldwide.

Bertelsmann will nominate five directors to the Board of Penguin Random House and Pearson will nominate four. John Makinson, currently chairman and chief executive of Penguin, will be chairman of Penguin Random House and Markus Dohle, currently chief executive of Random House, will be its chief executive.

In reviewing the long-term trends and considerable change affecting the consumer publishing industry, Pearson and Bertelsmann both concluded that the publishing and commercial success of Penguin and Random House can best be sustained and enhanced through a partnership with another major international publishing house. They believe that the combined organisation will have a stronger platform and greater resources to invest in rich content, new digital publishing models and high-growth emerging markets. The organisation will generate synergies from shared resources such as warehousing, distribution, printing and central functions. Pearson and Bertelsmann intend that the combined organisation?s level of organic investment in authors and new product models will exceed the total investment of Penguin and Random House as independent publishing houses.

The two companies believe that the combination will create a highly successful new organisation, both creatively and commercially, with the breadth and investment capacity to deliver significant benefits. Readers will have access to a wider and more diverse range of frontlist and backlist content in multiple print and digital formats. Authors will gain a greater depth and breadth of service, from traditional frontlist publishing to innovative self-publishing, on a global basis. Employees of the new organisation will be part of the world?s first truly global consumer publishing company, committed to sustained editorial excellence and long-term investment in a rich diversity of content. And shareholders will benefit from participating in the consolidation of the consumer publishing industry without having to deploy additional capital.

The combination is subject to customary regulatory and other approvals, including merger control clearances, and is expected to complete in the second half of 2013.

In 2011, Random House reported revenues of ?1.7bn (?1.48bn) and operating profit of ?185m (?161m). Penguin reported revenues of ?1.0bn and operating profit of ?111m with total assets of ?1.0bn. After completion, Pearson will report its 47% share of profit after tax from the joint venture as an associate in its consolidated income statement.

Under the terms of the agreement, neither Pearson nor Bertelsmann may sell any part of their shareholding in Penguin Random House for three years. To protect Pearson?s interests as a minority shareholder, if Bertelsmann declines a Pearson offer to sell its entire shareholding, Pearson may require a recapitalisation by which Penguin Random House raises debt of up to 3.5x EBITDA, with a dividend distributed to shareholders in line with their ownership. In addition, from five years after completion, either partner may require an IPO of Penguin Random House.

Marjorie Scardino, chief executive of Pearson, said:??Penguin is a successful, highly-respected and much-loved part of Pearson. This combination with Random House ? a company with an almost perfect match of Penguin?s culture, standards and commitment to publishing excellence ? will greatly enhance its fortunes and its opportunities.
