US looking at action against China cyberattacks

WASHINGTON (AP) ???The Obama administration is considering more assertive action against Beijing to combat a persistent cyber-espionage campaign it believes Chinese hackers are waging against U.S. companies and government agencies.

As The New York Times and Wall Street Journal reported Thursday that their computer systems had been infiltrated by China-based hackers, cybersecurity experts said the U.S. government is eyeing more pointed diplomatic and trade measures.

Two former U.S. officials said the administration is preparing a new National Intelligence Estimate that, when complete, is expected to detail the cyberthreat, particularly from China, as a growing economic problem. One official said it also will cite more directly a role by the Chinese government in such espionage.

Related story:?Officials say Chinese spies have targeted every sector of the U.S. economy

The official said the NIE, an assessment prepared by the National Intelligence Council, will underscore the administration's concerns about the threat, and will put greater weight on plans for more aggressive action against the Chinese government. The official was not authorized to discuss the classified report and spoke only on condition of anonymity.

Although the administration hasn't yet decided what steps it may take, actions could include threats to cancel certain visas or put major purchases of Chinese goods through national security reviews.

"The U.S. government has started to look seriously at more assertive measures and begun to engage the Chinese on senior levels," said James Lewis, a cybersecurity expert at the Center for Strategic and International Studies. "They realize that this is a major problem in the bilateral relationship that threatens to destabilize U.S. relations with China."

Chinese deny attacks
To date, extensive discussions between Chinese officials and top U.S. leaders ? including President Barack Obama and Defense Secretary Leon Panetta ? have had little impact on what government and cybersecurity experts say is escalating and technologically evolving espionage. The Chinese deny such espionage efforts.

Internet search leader Google focused attention on the China threat three years ago by alleging that it had traced a series of hacking attacks to that country. The company said the breaches, which became known as "Operation Aurora," appeared aimed at heisting some of its business secrets, as well as spying on Chinese human rights activists who relied on Google's Gmail service. As many as 20 other U.S. companies were also said to be targeted.

A four-month long cyberattack against The New York Times is the latest in a long string of breaches said to be by China-based hackers into corporate and government computer systems across the United States. The Times attacks, routed through computers at U.S. universities, targeted staff members' email accounts, the Times said, and were likely in retribution for the newspaper's investigation into the wealth amassed by the family of a top Chinese leader.

The Wall Street Journal on Thursday said that its computer systems, too, had been breached by China-based hackers in an effort to monitor the newspaper's coverage of China issues.

Media organizations with bureaus in China have believed for years that their computers, phones and conversations were likely monitored on a fairly regular basis by the Chinese. The Gmail account of an Associated Press staffer was broken into in China in 2010.

A more 'personal element'
Richard Bejtlich, the chief security officer at Mandiant, the firm hired by the Times to investigate the cyberattack, said the breach is consistent with what he routinely sees China-based hacking groups do. But, he said it had a personal aspect to it that became apparent: The hackers got into 53 computers but largely looked at the emails of the reporters working on a particular story. The newspaper's investigation delved into how the relatives and family of Premier Wen Jiabao built a fortune worth over $2 billion.

"We're starting to see more cases where there is a personal element," Bejtlich said, adding that it gives companies another factor to consider. "It may not just be the institution, but, is there some aspect of your company that would cause someone on the other side to take personal interest in you?"

Journalists are popular targets, particularly in efforts to determine what information reporters have and who may be talking to them.

The Chinese foreign and defense ministries called the Times' allegations baseless, and the Defense Ministry denied any involvement by the military.

"Chinese law forbids hacking and any other actions that damage Internet security," the Defense Ministry said. "The Chinese military has never supported any hacking activities. Cyberattacks are characterized by being cross-national and anonymous. To accuse the Chinese military of launching cyberattacks without firm evidence is not professional and also groundless."

In a report in November 2011, U.S. intelligence officials for the first time publicly accused China and Russia of systematically stealing American high-tech data for economic gain. And over the past several years, cybersecurity has been one of the key issues raised with allies as part of a broader U.S. effort to strengthen America's defenses and encourage an international policy on accepted practices in cyberspace.

Concern about Iran, Russia cyberthreats
U.S. cybersecurity worries are not about China alone. Administration officials and cybersecurity experts also routinely point to widespread cyberthreats from Iran and Russia, as well as hacker networks across Eastern Europe and South America

The U.S. itself has been named in one of the most prominent cyberattacks ? Stuxnet ? the computer worm that infiltrated an Iranian nuclear facility, shutting down thousands of centrifuges there in 2010. Reports suggest that Stuxnet was a secret U.S.-Israeli program aimed at destabilizing Iran's atomic energy program, which many Western countries believe is a cover for the development of nuclear weapons.

The White House declined comment on whether it will pursue aggressive action on China.

"The United States has substantial and growing concerns about the threats to U.S. economic and national security posed by cyber intrusions, including the theft of commercial information," said spokesman Caitlin Hayden. "We have repeatedly raised our concerns with senior Chinese officials, including in the military, and we will continue to do so."

Cybersecurity experts have been urging tougher action, suggesting that talking with China has had no effect.

"We need to find new approaches if we want to dissuade this type of activity," said Stewart Baker, former assistant secretary at the Department of Homeland Security and now in private law practice with Steptoe and Johnson in Washington. He said the U.S. must do a better job of attributing the cyberattacks to particular groups or nations and "see if we can sanction the people who are actually benefiting from them."

Slowly stepping up rhetoric
The Obama administration has slowly been ratcheting up its rhetoric. In an unusually strong speech last October, Panetta warned that the U.S. would strike back against cyberattacks, even raising the specter of military action. And the White House has been urging Congress to authorize greater government action to protect infrastructure such as the nation's electric grid and power plants.

Alan Paller, director of research at SANS Institute, a computer-security organization, said that the level of cyberattacks, including against power companies and critical infrastructure, has shot up in the last seven or eight months. And the U.S. is getting more serious about blocking the attacks, including an initiative by the Defense Department to hire thousands of high-tech experts.

Just talking about it, he said, is having no effect.

Lewis, who has met and worked with Chinese officials on the issue, said their response has been consistent denial that China is involved in the hacking and counter-accusations that the U.S. is guilty of the same things.

"In the next year there will be an effort to figure out a way to engage the Chinese more energetically," he said. "The issue now is how do we get the Chinese to take this more seriously as a potentially major disruption to the relationship."

The answer, he said, is, "You have to back up words with actions, and that's the phase I think we're approaching."

Obama says immigration overhaul possible by first half of 2013

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama rejected Republican complaints about his proposals for overhauling the U.S. immigration system on Wednesday and said he believed it was possible to get a deal done by the end of the year if not in the first half.

Obama gave an interview to a pair of Spanish-language U.S. television networks to promote his proposals for giving 11 million illegal immigrants a pathway to U.S. citizenship after a bipartisan Gang of Eight senators offered its own plan.

"I?m hopeful that this can get done, and I don?t think that it should take many, many months. I think this is something we should be able to get done certainly this year and I?d like to see if we could get it done sooner, in the first half of the year if possible," Obama told Telemundo.

If Congress delays, he said, "I've got a bill drafted, we've got language" ready to offer Capitol Hill.

Obama offered his own principles on immigration at an appearance in Las Vegas on Tuesday. He pushed for a pathway to citizenship for illegal immigrants that is faster than the one the Senate group proposed.

Rather than emphasize border security first as the senators want, he would let undocumented immigrants get on a path to citizenship if they undergo national security and criminal background checks, pay penalties, learn English and get behind those foreigners seeking to immigrate legally.

Asked by the Univision network about Republican criticism of his proposals, particularly from a Hispanic senator, Marco Rubio, Obama argued his administration had already done much work on securing the U.S. border with Mexico.

"Look, we put border security ahead of a pathway to citizenship. We have done more on border security in the last four years than we have done in the previous 20," Obama said. "We've actually done almost everything that Republicans asked to be done several years ago as a precondition to move forward on comprehensive immigration reform."

Obama offered to meet publicly or privately with Rubio and other senators to try to move the process forward.

The border security issue may be the toughest the two sides will have to overcome to reach the type of comprehensive overhaul that Washington has talked for years but been unable to execute.

After years on the back burner, immigration reform has suddenly looked possible as Republicans, chastened by Latino voters who rejected them in the November election, appear more willing to accept an overhaul.

Congress is now grappling with two major issues - immigration and Obama's efforts to tighten gun regulations. The president told Univision he believed Congress could handle both at the same time.

Obama said he wanted Congress to get legislation on immigration reform to the floor of the Senate by the beginning of March.

Lip-Sticking: Why Women's Entrepreneurship Style Is Getting ...

Guest post by Patrick Rosario?

Picture1According to American Express, the number of woman owned $1 million dollar businesses are growing. More women are taking the plunge and starting businesses of their own. This increase in not only female entrepreneurs, but high grossing female entrepreneurs has led to a shift in business leadership styles. Men and women alike have taken notice to the success of females in the market and with that have made an effort to shift a primarily male dominant industry to a business community that can thrive on the female style of management.

Here are some of the key components of the women?s entrepreneurship style that are taking the business world by storm.

Collaboration over Competition

In a world of man versus man, the competition was fierce. But now, while it is still necessary to compete to be successful in the marketplace, the way in which this is happening is shifting. Women are creating their competitive advantage by collaborating with other similar businesses to build their offering. In the former male dominated industry, while partnerships existed, it was more about how to beat the other players within your industry, instead of how to work with others who can improve your overall value.

Multitasking Champions

Women are well-known for their ability to multi-task and this has been named one of the key features of their success as entrepreneurs. Women are inherently better at doing multiple things at once. As an entrepreneur, there are constantly questions, ideas, opportunities, and work flying in your direction. The classic female quality of being able to take each of these things on at one time and organizing them into manageable chaos has led to a new style of entrepreneurialism in the market overall. With the fast pace of today?s society, being able to juggle multiple tasks and to-do lists has become a necessity to be successful. With more entrepreneurs open to this and teaching themselves how to tackle lengthy to-do lists, there has been a general shift in the style in which businesses are run today.

Growth of Networks

In what used to be a male dominated industry, females have come together in support of one another, and to give the encouragement every entrepreneur will at some point need. This growth in networking and coming together to share lessons learned about entrepreneurialism has proven to be beneficial to businesses overall, more networking groups are popping up. The power of having a group of women, or people behind not only your new business, but also you as a person propels entrepreneurs beyond their own realm of what they initially thought possible. Because of this incredible support system, more people are taking advantage and putting other people?s expertise to use for their business by joining a networking group either online or in their area.

Improved Technology

Most businesses start with an idea to fulfill an unmet need. For women who initially took on the role of running the household, starting a business while maintaining the health and well-being of their family meant starting their own business from their kitchen table or home office. With the advancement of technology today, more women are able to do this by connecting online and helping each other. Partnerships are easier to form, and there are websites, such as etsy.com, that have made it easier to get your product out on the market. By using websites such as this and current technology to communicate better together, female run companies have seen more growth because they are able to connect with other women who are in their same position, all via the internet.? This improvement in the way society communicates and interacts today has lent itself to a growth in the female style of leadership of working better together to team up instead of team against each other.

Fast food linked to higher asthma and allergy risk

New study links fast-food consumption to a greater risk for developing asthma, eczema and allergies.

Tue, Jan 15 2013 at 8:56 AM

Teens and kids who eat a lot of fast food may be at greater risk for developing asthma, eczema?and allergies, according to a new study published in the British Medical Journal's respiratory magazine,?Thorax.

?

For the study, researchers from?the University of Auckland in New Zealand and the University of Nottingham in the United Kingdom looked at surveys from more than 500,000 kids in 51 countries to determine how diet affected their allergy-related risks. They found that?eating fast food three times a week may lead to asthma, eczema?and itchy, watery eyes in children. ?

?

Researchers surveyed kids and their parents to determine whether or not they experienced symptoms of allergies, asthma and eczema. Participants also shared what types of foods they consumed each week. In the study, children in their early teens who ate fast food three or more times each week had a 39 percent greater risk of severe asthma. For 6- and 7-year-olds, there was a 27 percent increased risk. Overall, kids who ate fast food three or more times a week had about a 30 percent increased risk of severe allergies. The results were consistent across all age groups regardless of gender or socioeconomic status. ?

?

Interestingly, kids who ate fruit were able to cut their risk of developing these conditions. Researchers found that kids who ate three or more portions of fruit each week reduced their risk of severe asthma, eczema and allergies by between 11 and 14 percent.
